Mess Hall - Deck 3 - Battlestar Orion
The Crew Mess on the Orion is one of the larger rooms meant for occupation. The room is far longer than it is wide with the classic stainless steel tables that can be seen anywhere else on the ship, standard to all navy ships. Most of the chairs match, their padding on the seats worn down after several years. Towards the rear of the room is the food prep area and serving lines. During the time in between meals the Mess will serve midrats, or 'mid-shift rations', such as sandwiches and drinks. Coffee pots are left to run at all hours to keep people going as needed.

It's morning, breakfast time even, and the mess hall is busy, but not yet heaving. Dressed in civies with a heavy coat draped over the chair next to him, it would seem that Toby is bound down to Piraeus again once he's eaten his fill, and by the looks of his plate he's expecting a heavy day's work.

Ygraine comes in looking dozey-eyed, her flightsuit stripped away from the upper half of her body. She does not have the sleepy eyes of the newly awakened, but rather, of one who is soon for her rack. Someone pulled the night shift. She gets a tray loaded up and goes to sit down, offering a familiar nod of greeting to Toby as she starts to pass him.

Toby seems to be largely focused on shovelling in as much food as he can, as quickly as he can. It's not quite as if the table will someone magically transform and take whatever is still on his plate at any moment, but he's making a good show of it. The sight of a flightsuit out of the corner of his eye catches his attetnion though and he glances up mid-chew. Recognition is instant, as is something else as he holds a hand up to indicate he'd like a word while he chews even faster for a few moments to clear his mouth. After what seems to him to be an age, but is likely onl a moment or two he manages, "Lieutenant, you got a moment?"

"Mmm?" When she turns around, Ygraine has bacon shoved halfway into her mouth. She nods, moving to sit at his table while she chews and swallows. "What can I do for ya, Crewman?"

Jumping right in there Toby starts, "I was hoping I could pick your brain on something." Then, as if only just noticing how tired she looks, he blinks once then corrects himself to, "well, have you look over something for me and see what you think. When you have a spare few minutes?" Setting his fork down he picks up his mug of coffee instead and takes a quick slurp before explaining a little more, "it's to do with reconfiguring a raptor's DRADIS to try and find a great big hunk of metal that may or may nit be down on Piraeus."

"I've got a few minutes." she assures her, and mms. "This wouldn't have anythin' t'do with th' radioactive site, would it?"

"I would hope not," Toby replies slowly, and with a questioning look on his features. Infact his general reaction is largely consistant with someone who wasn't aware there was such a site. Then, after another slurp of coffee he clarifies, "it's to do with the search for Colonel Shepard. JAG have issued a warrent for him but we need to find him before the MPs can do their thing. Finding the raptor he stole is all part of that."

Ygraine's brow furrows and she lets out a sigh. "Yeah. Yeah, I'll help. Have you spoken at all to Rutlii? She and I worked together on boosting the sensor systems for that project. We could probably do something similar, but it does chance blowin' systems out."

"Not in a while," Toby confesses, "but I have been speaking with Lieutenant Durnst, and the nugget that was around a few months back. They had an idea of using induced polarity so that the metal in the airframe would make the raptor light up on the DRADIS. I've got a load of calculations for it, but I'm no expert and I'd rather have someone who is look over them before we actaully start reconfiguring a bird or two."

Ygraine blinks. "That sounds like an awful lot of work. Why don't ya just adjust th'sensors t'detect th'alloys instead of tryin' t'yank on th'DRADIS? Ya don't get milk from a horse."

"They didn't seem to think it would require that much modification," Toby answers, frowning slightly. "What sort of range would you be looking at for your idea?" Breakfast seemingly forgotten now he leans back in his chair a little, considering for a few moments then shakes his head as if to clear it. "Tell you what Lieutenant, I don't have the notes on me, but if I get them to you later today, would you take a look, and then maybe we can compare options?"

Ygraine nods. "Sure thing. The whole point on the mods we made to the sensor systems were so we could penetrade solid ground layers t'what lay beneath. We had t'get real close, but we had a lot of solid obstacle."

"In case he hid it in a cave?" Toby asks, pickingup his fork once more as he does so. "Can't say for sure 'til we compare of course, but that sounds like a more limitied range thing?" A faint shrug then, "maybe we can try and get permission to modify two raptors, stick one of the marine's jeeps somewhere or something and test to see which set up finds it first."
