Santos Ridge Finale

Summary:	Bitter cold, wind, thickly falling snow, Marines and civilians trapped within the dead shell of a nuked city on Picon - and the Cylons are moving in force for the kill. It looks like a bloody last stand and slim hope.

Bitter cold wintery nuked out shell of Santos Ridge.

Friday evening. The clouds have not let up. The snow has been falling for three hours now and there are several inches of the lightly radioactive powder on the ground. The wind howls, blowing the precipitation around in the air and into any hole in clothing. For most of the day yesterday, but especially today, the surrounding terrain has been an unending break of distant booms and rattles. Air ordnance is being delivered and occasionally a flaming aircraft wreckage comes down with it in the distance. But since the warning from Knox, visibility has dropped down to just about an eighth of a mile. They can see the minefield's far edge and just to the other side of the parking lot of the office across the street. Its cold as hell with temperatures plunging into the teens, the sun has started to set over the clouds bringing a more grim darkness to the battlefield, and in the distance… when the wind isn't howling.. they can hear the approach. Thsouands of Centurions are pouring into the city and their constant pounding on the terrain is subtly shaking the air and loose metal. Or is that just distant artillery and air strikes? Yeah, fat chance they are that lucky.

There have been repeated efforts to keep a clear landing zone, that rapidly turned into efforts to keep a clearer langing zone thanks to the wind. There's smoke prepared and ready and a lot of waiting around keeping eyes and ears peeled. With a heavy blanket now over his greatcoat as well, Amos has ditched the hornet due to the visibility and is currently waiting for a sign that it might be time to brave that battered turret again.

It's cold as hell and going to get a lot worse. The wind chill is bitter. Ynyr has tried to keep moving, stay busy. Don't think about his feet, though when he's had a few spare minutes he went to warm them by the fire. Not long enough. Then he has come back out again as the sound, the /vibrations/ slowly grow, feeling their approach through the frozen ground and the very air. Lleufer rechecks his rifle to be certain it hasn't iced up, oil applied to keep the mechanisms working. Good thing he took a little time to clean it today. Now it's a game of waiting and trying not to let their hearts fill with dread, and fear. Lleu might not like to admit it, but he's scared. He digs out his tiny vial of stims, only a few left. There never were many in there. He takes one out and pops it into his mouth, considers taking a second. No, he's already had too many. Lleu puts it away and might need the two that are last, later. He spares a sip from his canteen to down it, snow that's been melted now his water is long gone. The wind keeps blowing snow flakes into his eyes, his balaclava and bandana pulled close around his face and neck. All he can do is try to stay out of the wind while they wait.

Knox got his hour of sleep and took a coat for this trip. He bundled up and walked out to the overturned truck and huddled inside. With the need to signal the birds and land them in weather like this, he's going to have to be out in the middle of the LZ. Better to already be down there than to hustle in the middle of a fight. But as the sound of the approaching Centurions rises, he checks his ammo one last time and takes a knee at the front of the truck, putting the engine between him and the forthcoming Centurion bullets.

Brina managed to get a little nap before she was needed but despite uninterrupted sleep it wasn't enough. Another stim is taken and then it's time to settle in and, with rifle at the ready, try to help keep things clear as much as she can.

Kostas's been at work readying the civilians for immediate departure on a word, using the help of some of the ablebodied women and elderly. A few of the most steady ones might even have sidearms, if everything goes to shit on a cracker. There's little in the way of smiles or smartassery from her at the moment, but there is a steeliness therearmored externally and internally. The badass effect somewhat ruined now and then when she sheds a crumpled paper or two. Her vial of stims is latched to the an outside loop of her armor for easy reach, though they're as yet untouched. Her rifle's ready though, eyes scanning the horizonwell, as much as the snowfall will allow. "Hestia guide their path, Ares bless ours," she says quietly, to herself. "Let us be the standing shield, guide us to motherfrakkin' victory."

It's so eerie.. the sounds of the approaching Centurions, that solid sound that rattles the fragments of glass at the broken windows. Minefield set, Landing one cleared so far, again and again. At the moment, Jena is dressed in her full gear. She's quiet and she's standing near Jax for when the Cavalry arrive. If the Cavalry arrive. She'll be there to assist him onto the Raptor. If she's tired, she doesn't allow it to show, if someone looks weak, she's there with her canteen to assist them.

Still present, Fischer has reluctantly taken one of the stims. Now he's checking his rifle a bit quietly, as he waits for the incoming Centurions. Muttering something under his breath now, he seems quite calm at the moment.

Mallas's extra clothing is a shelter half poncho. Once the LZ was cleared he's spent every possible moment sitting and dozing, machinegun across his lap. But once the time arrives and he's told to move, the Private climbs grimly to his feet and makes his way out into the icy fog, back to the firing position he had set up the other night at the corner of the building. He sets up the Zasta, lays out a spare magazine, and settles in to wait some more. He can feel the Centurions out there, the same as everyone else. Tired, cold, and thirsty, the waiting is just getting on his nerves. "What the frak are they waiting for? Chicken shits."

Never one to be large on talk, small talk that is, Nadir isn't especially talkative now as the sound of the weather and the sound of the approach - be it artillery or something more immediate like an army of metal-head machines - does little to inspire her to sudden fits of loquaciousness. With her hands tucked into her pockets, Samtara is alternately pacing to keep warm or making the rounds among the civilians or wounded, both civilian and soldier, that are trapped here.

Amos glances towards Kostas and gives her a brief, reassuring nod. That sound is loud enough now that he's going to move, but first, over the comms, "Remember marines, we're waiting on the cavalry. They aren't going to arrive early, they're going to wait until we're a bit bloodied, then show up and insist we buy them all drinks. 'Just in the nick of time' I believe is their prefered phrase. Well. Lets show those fleet boys what marines are made of." Yes, he's keeping his tone light, good humour being preferable in his book to doom and gloom. "So, I spot anyone of us bleeding on a raptor floor, there'll be hell to pay." Lifting up and moving towards the .50 he ends the broadcast with, "and while we're at it, lets show those canners too."

Closer and closer. The sound keeps rising in volume until its felt in the chest and lungs almost as much as heard over the howl of the wind. Peering out into the blowing snow, small drifts are beginning to appear over rubble making the LZ one treacherous place to land. With near white-out conditions approaching, this is going to get close.
And then it happens. There's a flicker of movement at the end of the minefield and one of them explodes in a bright flash and puff of smoke. Pieces of steel sail into the air and then there's another right next to it. Then another. And a fifth. And seventh. …and then nothing more from that side. But the reprieve doesn't last long. The canners can be seen charging across the far parking lot. First its only a few but within a couple seconds there is almost a dozen. And there are thousands behind them.

Lleufer wipes snow from his goggles to keep them clear again, already hunkered down behind cover. He has an excellant line of sight for shooting either direction, or can shift to other cover, having chosen a position with those options in mind. His gaze watches the streets but his mouth moves into a thin smile before he speaks over the comms, "Same to you, Sir. Hope you wore your lucky boob plate tonight." That would go for Brina as well, where ever she's positioned herself. Lleu turns his head to look and see if she's shifted from where he'd seen her a little while ago, then back to watching the street.

As soon as the Centurions come into view, Jena moves to cover the Doctor, the precious commodity. "Stay under cover, please," she requests of the Captain, in no place to order or demand anything of anyone here, but she definitely knows how much the doctor is needed on the Orion.

Nadir flexes her left hand, holds it out slightly, notes - rather calmly - that her damned hand is shaking again - and flexes it once more before she remembers to actually take the sidearm out of it's designated holster and checks it over. Carefully checks it over. "I fully intend to stay under cover. In fact, I've heard nice things about basements or perhaps bomb shelters. I'd like to try one of those," said in a somewhat rhetorical manner as she shares a nod with Jena. "I'm Sam, by the way, if we're going to be shot at, it seems only right to be on a first name basis at this point." Safety - off. Good. Excellent.

Now all those Centurions, that's an awe-inspiring sight, although it's also both something to fear, and to hate. "Come on, my dearest girls, keep on protecting me…" Fischer mutters, one hand going to where those photos are kept, very briefly, before he readies his rifle again, aiming for one of the centurions now.

Amos has the HMG ready and raring to go by the time the first mine goes. Focusing carefully, waiting for them to emerge he distrusts the sudden silence from there intently but the sound of the approach from the carpark has him swinging the big gun round and firing into the on coming mass. He's trying to keep his shots to specific targets, to take down a few rather than dint a load, fill up that gap with their centurion dead and all that. Where gap in this case is a while smegging car park.

The crack of exploding mines earns a smirk from Private Mallas, but even he knows that was just a handful of what they're going to have to deal with. By this time he's settled down prone on the ground, ready behind the light machinegun. Judging by the sound, he swings his weapon around towards the first wave of Centurions, firing as soon as he catchs a glimpse of that frakking silver color they've all become so intimately familiar with. "Ares, Lord of War…" he mutters to himself just before opening fire. "… here come a lot more offerings…"

Brina is not too far from the others and the Sergeant shouldn't have difficulty finding where she is. That said, she doesn't notice he's looking for her as she's keeping eyes forward. When she feels lke it is time she readies her weapon and takes aim, her expression grave.

It's probably not seen by the others, but there's a wolfish, predatory smile that brightens Kostas' facewhite teeth flashing against tan and dirty skin, as there's the sound of explosions in the distanceand then more importantly, a halt of some of the marching centurions. "C'mon down, ya tin shits," she grins. "Aw, fuck yeah, Marines!" She aims her rifle, ready to shoot at the first target that pops into her sight.

Aye, that's a cheerful sight! Territorial shaping, denying the Centurions from coming through the mined ground. Ynyr bares his teeth in the cold, breath frosting, "Eat that, shiny shitheads." Lleu has already set himself up as they begin to come through the other way. Aye, here is the beginning of the end for their ordeal here, one way or the other. The Aerilon Sergeant starts firing bursts as their enemy comes into sight.

A brief flash of a smile is given to Nadir and Jena is preparing to open fire. "A bomb shelter would be good about now. Nice to meet you, Sam. I'm PO Jena Cruz." Pleasantries done, she opens fire on the Centurion that seems to be gunning for the doctor.

Iphigenia is somewhat retreated back, having been praying with the civilians. But she's starting to move forward, reaching the edge of viable firing range and seeking out cover so she can set up her own position. The chaplain intends to fight.

One of the canners gets mowed down by several Marines, one of whom is Brina who gives a softly hissed, "Yes," when she sees it collapse. The other she tries to spray down with bullets is still on its feet and she quickly changes tactics. Going for a burst attack instead, she aims and shoots.

A few bullets strike Kostas square in the chest as she pops up—one pinging off harmlessly from her armor, the other one only partially stopped. The wirey woman oofs slightly at the slight backward momentum it throws her into, but as "her" centurion goes down she aims her rifle at the next target, firing off another burst without hesitation.

Brina also happened to get zinged in the leg, which hurts and bleeds freely, but is largely ignored.

Amos sees a large chunk of the front rank of centurions go down and offers up a word or two of thanks to Athena as he continues to fire. He has a good line of sight, nothing between him and them bar the remains of the turrett. Alas, this also means he's a little ore exposed then the rest and he rocks slightly as several bullets hit. "I'm hit!" he calls, "almost out of ammo here, will fall back when empty." He's got his grenades at had for that very purpose.

Since it seems to be the thing to do, and taking a two handed grip on the pistol, sights along the edge of it and rolls her left shoulder slightly to try to loosen the tense set OF said should before she follows suit and starts lining up rounds with as much sensible care - that is, aim, fire, aim, fire; none of that bad mannered blind shooting - to follow Jena's example. As the bullets start flying in toward everyone, and she's pretty convinced it's everyone that's getting riddled with bullet holes at this point, Nadir resolutely reminds herself NOT to close her eyes. Also, as that, it's a bad idea to do that. So. As the bullets ping off of what ever it is that they're crouched behind, Nadir keeps firing until she sees the bullets don't bounce away and instead hits Jena with that nasty sound of impact that she dislikes so intently. She grabs ahold of the armor that Jena is wearing with the intent to tug her more down and out of the line of fire, while intent does not necessarily mean accomplishing same. The intent matters. "Helmets, and better armor," she says in a low voice while checking Jena over. "Did the bullet cut through the armor?" she asks in a voice pitched to carry.

Holy Frak. And Mallas thought there were a lot of Centurions the first night. There's no time for thinking or looking around, just a mass of big silver robots in front of him and a machinegun to fire. The steady, desperate rattle of his Zasta sounds almost continuously, throwing a hail of armor piercing rounds out to meet the Cylons.

Lleufer fires away and has the satisfaction of seeing some of his shots hit, even if the one he was shooting at doesn't go down. Several do in the first wave - but there are so many more coming! The roar of the .50 cal Amos is firing is a good thunder to hear, even if alas the larger stuff's been used up. Ynyr grimaces and risks a glance back when Ommanney calls out but there are medics. There seems no end to these canners spilling through the snowy nightfall. Lleufer fires again, waiting for them to get closer before he'll try using his two precious frags.

Standing in cover of the doctor doesn't gain Jena any favor of the Centurions! As a bullet strikes her abdomen, it rips through her armor, leaving a lovely little bleedy spot. She feels it but doesn'Her lips quirk into a pained smile. Joke or cry, that was her options.

What's this? A bullet hitting him? Fischer stumbles back a bit, before he's back in full, pointing his rifle at another Centurion, and firing off another burst. "Time to go down…" Going back to his cover now, it would seem.

Standing in cover of the doctor doesn't gain Jena any favor of the Centurions! As a bullet strikes her abdomen, it rips through her armor, leaving a lovely little bleedy spot. She feels it but doesn't stop, skidding to a stop near Amos. "Just try not to deafen me, I'd hate to be discharged with that." Her lips quirk into a pained smile. Joke or cry, that was her options. "Just a little," she looks back at Samtara, giving her that same pained smile. "I'll be fine, want to treat the boss instead? Let me shoot the enemy and cover you."

Iphigenia from her crouch, the soft cadence of prayer begins, as ever her companion when she has to confront centurions. Iphigenia takes careful aim at one of them, whispers to Ares and Athena on her breath.

Following Jena, as this seems to be the smartest, or possibly the craziest, idea imaginable, but she follows anyway. Chiefly because first Jena is hurt and when one's patient goes skidding away it's important to follow. And duck. How does one follow and duck? By trying really really hard to move fast. She feels the impact of the bullet that kicks her back half a breath, breathes for a moment of inventive invective before going to one knee beside Amos and starting to check him over. "Hold still," she says in a terse voice, her backpack sliding to the ground beside her as she begins working, never once glancing up. Trying to, and this is key, keep the curve of her helmet in the way of any more bullets.

Amos doesn't realise the medics have joined him until it's too late to send them back. "Frak!" he curses as he sees the surgeon getting hit, then turns to the PJ, "get her back under cover. I've got a few rounds left here and then I'll be joining you quick enough." THat apparently all the attention he can spare the pair he turns back to firing, not much else he can do really as he empties the guns clip into the oncoming horde.

Bullets are striking all around Mallas' firing position, sending bits of concrete and dust into the air. By some miracle he has not yet been hit, but how long can that last? There's no choice but to hold tight and keep firing…

Out treating the turret folks is probably not the wisest idea Jena has had all month. Year.. but she's dedicated now and as they are shot, she brgins working on the doctor. "Get the Sergeant!" Following the doctor down so she can stop her bleeding while hopefully the doctor helps the Marine.

Iphigenia remains where she is, murmuring lowly as she carefully tracks the Cylon she's elected to target before squeezing the trigger.

Firing off another few shots, Fischer frowns a bit now, as he sees the enemy didn't go down. Frowning, he fires at it once more, expression quite distant now.

Knox takes a couple hits to his arm and they start bleeding right away. He lets off a long string of curses and hangs the armto his side,sifting the rifle to 'bipod' it on the pushbar of the truck's front end.

"Language," Nadir says at Ommanney in a mild tone of voice, once she's satisfied that her temporary work will do the job, in a pinch. She eyes Jena again, sees that she's not in a position of falling over or passing out from blood loss and eyes Knox next. "And I followed her," just to keep that clear even as she's taking aim at Knox next with the intent to triage his wounds on the spot and do what repairs she can.

Things are really heating up! Mostly against them. Ynyr tries to keep dibs on who's up and firing, who's down, and hears the shouts for medics. The Centurions are still pouring forth and getting a little closer. Lleu doesn't want'm /too/ close before he's using grenades as he might well blow up their own asses, so when his rifle does little to penetrate on his last burst, the Marine Sergeant pulls one of his grenades, "FRAG OUT!" And lobs it as accurately as he might!

Jena hadn't been able to get in there while Sam was treating the Sergeant, so she'd taken the time to fire at the enemy. Now though, she's down, intent on assisting the doctor with her bleeding.. "Nicely done, Doc," she murmurs, stanching the flow of blood and bandaging her up. "Now.. we need to probably separate and help where we can.." Unfortunately.

Brie tries to fire but just as the trigger is squeezed she's shot and pretty damn seriously, too, causing her to actually yelp like a dog who had its tail stepped on, her targets missed entirely. The impact sends her ass over teakettle and she falls flat on her back. Gritting her teeth to stiffle any more cries of pain, she struggles to reload her rifle even as she bleeds. "Frak… am down!" Hopefully someone can come and help her before she bleeds out.

With the HMG eventually clicking empty, Amos is true to his word. Grabbing the grenade he had ready he pulls the pin and hurls the rest into the on coming mass of metal before extracting himself from the tank and making a run back towards the office building that has become their temporary home.

Well, that wasn't a great throw. Ynyr no sooner had his arm coming up than a round pings him in the side of his neck - the same side he'd been hit before! Maybe it puts his throw off slightly. Whatever the case, he swears and grabs back his rifle, hunkering back down fast and picking a new target to fire at. It's so hard to tell which is which. All the toasters look the same, damn it.

There's a hail of gunfire all around her, but luckily none hits her—of course, Kostas misses most of her shots this time too. Out of the corner of her eye she sees a few of her marines getting hit far worse. "MEDIC! IN THE BACK!" she shouts, presumably meaning back where the bulk of the Marines are, but she doesn't stop firing.

Mallas keeps the bullets raining in the centurion parade's direction.

Knox looks over as Sam goes to work on his arm. He doesn't fight but he stays still with the arm while shooting. Once she finishes he nods to her. "Thanks. I'll be alright up here. Just take care of the rest. I can take the pain, Doc." But with the arm patched, he brings it back up and lets go with another burst.

Calling on Artemis and Ares and Athena, Iphigenia continues to remain calm while maintaining her firing sights.

Okay, so his target didn't go down yet. And so Fischer keeps on firing, muttering something under his breath as he ducks down into cover again, as quickly as he can.

Lleufer heard something, didn't he? If not Brina's breathless yelp and her weak call, even near to him, he certainly does hear Kostas sing out. Ynyr turns his head and tries to locate who's down but Brina's fallen back and he can't see who. So he looks back to the Centurions and keeps firing, teeth gritted and grim.

Nadir grits her teeth as Jena goes to work on that which the armor did not entirely deflect. Even if she isn't swearing at this point, it's all about manners in Sam's twisted little brain, but she's thinking very intently about never leaving the ship again by the time Jena ties off the bandages. "Thank you," she says in a low voice while, since she'd taken her turn to treat Knox, she shakes her head: "Just because you can doesn't mean that you won't bleed out if left untreated," she reminds Knox. The shout for Medic tells her that they're both needed elsewhere and, now that they aren't needed /here/ she takes this brief moment to offer some pale attempt at cover fire before she gets ready to sprint again. Good idea, bad idea.

Not looking to see how his throw goes, Amos just turns and legs it. It's not a great distance to run but in these conditions he really wishes that turret had landed closer to the offices. Muttering under his breath "Ares be my shield," as he accelerates across the snow he calls loudly to the marines, "I'm coming in, friendly incoming!" Getting shot by his won me would be embarressing.

"Anytime, boss," Jena says quietly, but there are other wounded and she takes a deep breath before running towards the next casualty, it happens to be Lleufer. She shakes her head as she sees the condition of his head. "Just.. be patient, we'll get you covered, Sergeant." Already, she's applying the antiseptic spray and reaching for the bandages. "Won't take long, we'll have you back on your feet in no time." The smile she wears is encouraging.

Snagging her backpack, and holding the pistol one handed, Nadir makes her way toward the last sighting she'd had of Brina before the bullets starting zipping through the air in that nasty sound that she is so much not a fan of. By the time she gets over to where Brina is, Nadir has remembered why it is that she's so bloody impressed by marines. All of them. "My apologies," she says to the young marine as she sets to work, "let me see what I can do."

Whoa! A round strikes Lleufer's helmet and sends him ass over backwards, sprawled. It dazzes him but he's not really hurt, shoving himself up at once and lifting his rifle he lays it back down on the chunk of concrete and cusses under his breath. And here comes Jena to check on him. Ynyr almost spits at her, "Not tak'n my helmet off!" But, maybe she can reach it anyway, or his neck which is also bleeding - but only from a graze. Lleu's firing away almost at once again, determined to slow that hoard from reaching them. It's only a matter of time.

Kostas pops out from her cover to fire a burst at the closest centurion to get in her sights, eyes narrowing in relief as in her peripheral vision she sees the medical team heading back where her folks are, and Amos preparing to get to better cover.

Fischer nods as the Centurion finally goes down, before he lowers his rifle, and picks up one of the grenades, lobbing it towards another Centurion now. "Steady arm…" he mutters to himself, as he watches the grenade go flying, before ducking back down behind his cover again.

There is the faintest, most bitter smile when Iphigenia sees her target Centurion fall - she's not even sure she's responsible, but it doesn't matter. She begins to line up a new target. "For the wrath and might of Ares is with us, and he looks down upon us with favor that we may smite our enemies…"

Brina is just laying there still but not still. She's moving into position to try and shoot something big, metallic and fugly, too stubborn to give the frak up despite how she should probably just rest or something.

Brina looks at the doc as she works but she doesn't stay still unless necesarry, Brina trying to attack one of the enemy forces. Looks like she managed to hit and she sighs, now laying back. "Do that voodoo that you do," she whispers groggily, Nadir given a quick smile. "But do the voodoo kinda fast, please. Got more assholes to take out."

Unable to get to his head wound, Jena treats his neck, muttering something about stubborn Marines while she wears a smile. Bedside manners and all that, despite the wound she had suffered also. "You're good to go Sergeant Ynyr."

Lleufer doesn't even notice the cold now except in his stiff fingers. There's too much going on too fast. He barely spares Jena a look but shouts, "Thanks!" before he's changing the setting on his rifle. Gods damn, he can't seem to bring these frakkers down and he's starting to get a little pissed. Especially as he hears others call out, or catches site of them taking hits from the corner of his eye. Lleu's breath is up, his heart pounding as he shifts position and lets the rounds rip from his rifle, determined to bring this persistant son of a bitch down.

Amos hurls himself over the top of a pile of rubble as he hears bullets pinging all around him, "thank you Ares, lord of war," he mutters as he rolls into his landing before scrabbling up and back towards the cover he just cleared, bringing his much abused SMI 80 up to fire at any centurion who happens to cross it's barrel.

Blood sprays the wall behind her as Kostas takes a critical to the neck, her left hand ripped into by the same spray of gunfire. The Canceronian goes down hard, though once she gets over the daze she slaps a hand to her neck where blood is pouring between her fingers. It's a slow pour though—not an artery. She still stubbornly has a chance to sit her ass up and fire from the side, teeth gritted, like that's going to stop the bleeding or something.

Doing what amounts to stop-gap work does NOT fit in Nadir's plans, at all, but she does what she can for the moment and nods. "I need you to hold on for a bit longer," she is very very careful with the pain meds she has left, but she gives Brina just enough to take the smallest bit of the edge off before she rests one hand on the marine's shoulder. "I'll be back. Do try to stay down, will you?" she asks, very politely, then heads for where Kostas position with the intent to do what she's been doing, run (scuttle) from patient to patient.

"Air mail delivery!" Fischer calls out as he throws his last grenade, just hoping he can manage to get it closed to a Cylon. That done, he crouches down again, starting to ready his rifle once more. "Wish the cabbies would get here soon…" he mutters, under his breath.

Bullets are still flaying them all, and Mallas starts to eat his share. Two in the torso someplace, the pain like a hard whack in the ribs as they impact his vest. Then a third sparks off his machinegun and fragments, sending shards of metal into his hand. "Frak!" But the machinegun is still in action and rounds keep going out, tracers zipping into the ranks of the Centurions.

Suddenly there's no one immediately available to treat, so Jena takes up her weapon, aiming for the Centurion who is shooting at the Sergeant she had just treated.. She's not ready for him to go down again, so she attempts to help him mow down the enemy.

Pray and fire. Pray and fire. Iphigenia's mantra is never-ending as she does her best to bring down as many Centurions as she can.

Gunfire everywhere and visibility continues to decrease, but while it does get colder and colder, one thing doesn't change and that is the temperature of muzzle blasts or their location on the terrain. Or the heated core of the Centurions. Knox stops firing suddenly and turns and shouts at the top of his lungs: "INCOMING!!!" The JTAC rolls behind the truck and sticks his head between his knees. Barely a second later there is what sounds like a God ripping the universe's largest burlap sack and its getting louder. Then there is a puff downwards from the clouds overhead and …a bright flash a few blocks away. Snow shudders out from the source of the light as the shockwave ripples across the terrain. A 280mm shell lands and blows a forty foot crater in the ground and the sound is nearly as loud as the roll of the ground that nearly knocks people off their feet. Then there's another blast a few blocks north. Then ano- they just keep landing. Debris and rock and pieces of building and cars rain down across the terrain as the massive bombardment begins. Overhead, somewhere, a JTAC is looking at a thermal screen in a Raptor and guiding rounds in. But the Centurions just increase their pace, trying to get closer and inside the artillery… then think nobody will shoot too close to their own people. They're probably right.

Mallas hears a meaty *thwak*, knowing the sound of a bullet hitting flesh from recent experience. Who got hit? The sudden stab of searing pain in his chest answers that question. Blood starts to seep down under his vest, where a cracked armor plate has finally shattered and let a round through clean. "Corpsman!" He yells, voice hoarse and strained. He's about to get back on his gun when the sky rips open and the city around them starts to explode under the incoming orbital gunfire. Mallas ducks at the first salvo, holding his helmet onto his head. But Godsdamned if there aren't still centurions out there. He pops up long enough to fire off a blast from the LMG.

Well, now might be the time to pop a stim, to give her that extra oomph while her head's reeling from the bloodloss. Kos shoulders her rifle, fumbles for the easy acess to her vial, manages to get one pill in her mouth. SHe's about to cap it and sling her rifle again when she hears Knox's shout. She's much slower in her reaction than usual, so when that shockwave hits them the vial tumbles from her numb fingers, scattering the rest of the stims across the floor. She bellows wordlessly, though it translates to FUCKIT, wisely deciding to just stay on her ass and scoot on it for an opening in cover, "ALMOST THERE! HOLD TIGHT!" The words are a lot hoarse than usual, a lot harder to come by. She might be shouting to her old biddies in the pack of civilians who are probably mostly cowering at the point. But she keeps firing at the wall of metal still advancing towards them.

It is much as if the universe as they know it turns itself inside out in the ultimate close up fireworks display. As if the Gods themselves with Zeuz at the lead were hurling bolts of fire and wrath down into the earth of Picon - and man, wouldn't you rather NOT be so close with this front row seat? The noise and the ground thumping impacts are deafening! Lleufer is momentarily stunned before he shouts out at the top of his lungs - which very possibly no one can hear if they are getting deafened by the bombardment, "OOORAH!" and he pulls his last grenade to lob it with all his might into the ranks of canners, "FRAG OUT!"

Knox lets the rifle hang from his chest as he looks up and rises to his knees. His gaze goes skyward towards the snow and he runs out towards the LZ. Reaching onto his chest, he pulls of smoke grenades and starts throwing them and then pulls out a pair of bright green flares. He's lit up like a tree and the most obvious target on the terrain. The flares are held out and then swung over his head and held there as he runs towards the billowing and blowing red smoke.

Nadir tugs the helmet she's wearing just a bit lower, as if that's even possible, and ducks DOWN at the same time, one hand resting on the cold ground that she's crouched on at this point where is near Kostas. She has the backpack in her left hand, her fingers curled on the nylon, gripping it hard enough to try to wrinkle the fabric - a nigh to impossible thing really, especially the way these backpacks are designed. But she crouches all the same. All in all, she's not a marine, and crouching down and ducking her head down seems like the best possible idea.

"The fleet boys have decided to join the party!" Amos roars over coms just as soon as his ears have stopped ringing quite so badly. "Keep your heads low but keep laying fire, cavalry's coming." That said he's bringin his rifle back up from where he'd left it hanging at the call of incoming and prepares to fire again, aiming to give covering fire for Knox as he guides the raptors in.

Brina covers her ears when the heavy ammunition rains upon them and she winces, that entirely too fraking close for her comfort. When it's over and she thinks to shoot again she tries to shoot. She's very shakey, however, and she finds herself uncertain as to whether she'll hit again or if she has used up all her luck.

Oh what a lovely noise and all that. Fischer gets out his rifle again and moves into a position to fire a burst at one of the Centurions now. As he hears Amos' words over the coms, he's unable to hold back a few words. "About frakking time…" he calls out.

Lleufer does his best to try and give Knox some cover - grenade style! Blow those frakers nearest him but try not to hit the Six!

At the news that support is inbound, Iphigenia is unable to restrain fro giving out a cheer. It doesn't stop her from continuing to fire though, as she shifts her stance to pick out a new tin can to put bullets in. "Do you hear that? Those are the Dogs of War, eager for your metal bones." she mutters under her breath.

The raptors can be heard long before they're seen; a half dozen ear-splitting cracks of FTL drives disengaging that shakes the still, snow-filled air like thunderous cymbals going off in perfect synchronisation. Almost immediately, rows of centurions on the ground turn and begin blanketing the incoming buses with armour-piercing bullets. There is a loud rattle as one of the birds' engines is hit, followed by a sickening crunch as the sheared-off turbine begins chewing up the bus it was attached to moments ago, then the sound of something large slamming into the ground at high speed. A great gout of flame and smoke goes up seconds later, but the raptors' inexorable march toward the surface continues.

Bennett can probably see nothing until her altimeter is reading about one hundred feet. Then she'll probably see random tracer fire and then, surprisingly, there is red smoke mixed in with the blowing snow. Its a marked LZ! Plus two green flares crossed from the landing party. Meanwhile the Centurions redouble their efforts and charge full throttle. The artillery slams down, slowly walking in closer and closer until it nearly gets hard to stand upright. Each blast sucks a little air from the lungs and brings down more debris, raining more rocks and terrain chunks down on everything. Its not like getting shot but it sure as hell hurts when it hits. Around them, the Centurions seem to be closing fast but farther to the north, tracers begin to appear. The Centurions have bypassed the minefield and are coming down the street. In about five minutes this place is going to be home to about a hundred Centurions.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Flight to ground units, be advised we are coming in zero-zero. I repeat, zero-zero. Standby for evacuation."

"Get the civilians ready to move," Amos calls back, "we're goin got have to screen them so they need to be on their way soon as." As more centurions turn to attack the JTAC he continues as before, laying down fire to keep their heads down and buy them some breathing space. Once the call comes in over the coms though he's calling back.

"LADIES GET READY TO MOVE!" is Kostas' broken and patchy shout back to the civilians, though she's going to wait for Amos to give the goahead before actually telling them to move. "We almost outta here, Doc. When th' signal's given we gotta run like hell. You doin' good. Keep shootin' 'em canners." Her aside to Sam is quieter, as she readies her rifle and fires a burst towards the canners herself.

Sucking in as much air as she can, Lleufer gets shoutted at by the still mostly prone Lance. "Sarge. Get these! I can't use them for shit!" 'These' happens to be her grenades which she strips off of whatever part of equipment they've been lashed to and then held out, ready for him to snatch up as soon as he can.

Once more Nadir slings the backpack full of medical supplies onto her shoulders, takes up the pistol again and, after a brief moment of somewhat frantic mental math, checks to make sure there's still some rounds left. Onward then. Or, rather, taking aim at what ever gleams in the falling snow. "Keep shooting, prepare to run, get the civilians out first or all of this was for nothing," she agrees with a nod at Kostas before squinting at the Raptors again and shuddering.

Knox runs out there in the hail of gunfire and a round slams into his armor and sends him tumbling and rolling into the snow with the flares. He falters on getting up for a moment and then rises to his feet once more and waves the flares back up over his head. But once he see's the shapes of the Raptors in the snow, he waves them vigorously before crossing them one last time. He backpeddles in the snow quickly, still taking fire and spreads his arms to a T, gently waving up and down to give the pilot a sense of just where in the hell she is and how far from Knox until she can see him.

Jena hears the Raptor, sees Knox with the flares.. Now was the time to make it or break it. Get out or die. She remains near the rear of the pack, aiming at any of the Centurions who are aiming at the Raptors, preparing to get the wounded Jax and the other Marines on before herself. Watching the Centurion in her sights, she pulls the trigger, a burst, towards the enemy.

Lleufer is about out of ammo and needs to change magazines. He's about to eject the near empty when he hears Brina's shout. She's close and still relatively unhurt, Ynyr lunges from his cover to hers to grab them up, "Thanks! You able to run or I need to carry you?! Ride's com'n in!" Where's Kostas? He can hear her but last he glimpsed of her, she looked like she'd need to be carried out as well. Lleu pulls the pin on the first grenade and lobs that puppy, "FRAG OUT!" Not that anyone can hear him in all the bombing, shooting, engine, crashing thunderous noises and shit falling out of the sky.

"Alright!" Iphigenia breaks off from her prayer briefly to call out, "Everyone be ready to move!" This to the civilians who have been prepped for signal once the way is clear.

Another raptor is picked off by some very concentrated enemy fire. This time, it's a centurion with a shoulder-mounted missile pack whose payload slams right through the cockpit of one of the buses before it has any hope of taking evasive actions. There's a loud SLAM of the ejection apparatus firing seconds before the transport ship plows into the ground. Only one seat goes flinging off into the blizzard; looks like the backseater didn't make it.

Meanwhile, several of the buses that made it intact are landing— some more gracefully than others. One hits the ground, bounces, and slams back down again with a crunch of skids buckling. Bennett's bus swoops in a little too fast, pulls up abruptly at one hundred feet, and then settles down with a solid thump as snow is blown free by its engines. The hatch is immediately popped, and the pilot unbuckles her harness in order to move into a defensible position inside the raptor. Her copilot, meanwhile, is keeping an eye on DRADIS and getting things prepped for incoming.

Mallas looks up when the PJ starts to work on him, and close up Jena might easily see his expression is one of total fury. Is that directed at her? Apparently not as he just gives a sharp nod downward, towards the bloody spot on his chest, and then turns that anger towards the incoming Centurions. The thunderous arrival of the raptors, and the shouts among the officers and NCOs, lets him know he's going to have to move soon. But for now he needs to keep the Cylons off those birds.

Lleufer is behind cover in part because of shit falling out of the sky with the shelling bombardment, and also all those bullets flying. None the less, once he's got that grenade from Brina, Ynyr must partly leap up to get a good throw - and a very good throw it is, landing /right/ where he wanted it, at one of the canners shooting at the incoming Raptor. After all, if their ride is shot down, who's get'n them out of here? Unfortuantely for the Sergeant, his timing also catches rounds as not one but two Centurions have located his position and nail him with a flood of bullets. The first is a direct hit to his helmet, punching through it. The Marine Mp's body jerks with the impacts and before Lleu can register he's even been hit bad, he's thrown back to fall with the crunch of armor and body on the frozen concrete. His rifle is knocked from his hands, clattering as it skids out of his reach. Where he lands, Ynyr doesn't move, dazed or dead.

Even as Ynyr is getting shot Brina's rising to her feet, a bit of timing that is fortunate, perhaps. "You were supposed to carry me, you dumb fraker!" There's an urge to kick his unconscious form but what she does do is grab for the back of his gear, fully intending on getting him somewhere safe. All the while she's cussing up a storm, more than enough to make a virgin blush as the words get more and more colorful and the phrasing increasingly creative.

Nadir is turning to see, counting noses literally, and has the kind of timing to see Lleufer go flying only to land with a nasty crunch of sound. Another one fo those jog/scuttles to get from point A to point B and joins Brina in the attempt to get Leu out of the way and behind more cover as she does a quick triage of the scope of his wounds. "Damned helmets need to be made out of something stronger than this," she mutters as she crouches down and sets to work to stabilize the wounds, starting from the head and working her way from there.

"MOVE!" Amos bellows as he sees a raptor touch down, "anyone who can't walk, carry them! NOW!" He lifting up from cover as he calls that, vaulting over the rubble he's been crouching behind to fire and making a dash for the landing zone and the oh so welcome sight of the raptors. THere's a brief mutter of prayer for the pilot ejecting, since they don't stand a chance, then he's looking for a spot to crouch and cover the retreat of teh slower evacuees.

At the sound of the order, Iphigenia helps to guide the civilians to the raptors, twisting from the torso to fire for cover as may be necessary.

Jena flashes Mallas a friendly smile. "No sweat, Private." Course he hadn't spoken to her, but she was polite if anything. Remaining near him and Jax, she has every intent on helping any Marine unable to get to the Raptor by their own power. As Lleu gets hit and Sam and Brina assist, she remains where she is to help in getting the others out. "C'mon Marine, let's go home."

"MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!" is Kostas' relay of Amos' command, though it's a strained bellow, meant to move it down the line. And then she's running for the raptors as well, paler than usual, and bringing up the rear, firing as she goes.

The Captain is yelling, and everyone is moving, running for the raptors, but Mallas hesitates for a split second. He is ready to grit his teeth and go right back to killing Centurions. Then he rises up, double-timing it after the rest of the Marines and blazing away with his LMG. He's not trying to kill Centurions anymore, just keep up some outgoing and slow them down. See people scrambling, getting hit still, he realizes this isn't working. Mallas turns and braces the Zasta, taking the time to aim a burst before he turns and runs for the nearest raptor door.

Skidding to a halt next to a raptor, Amos almost looses his footing in the snow but then he's resting up against the side of the bird ad dropping down to one knee to take up a decent firing position. He's not entirely sure how many bullets he has left, but it's not enough to be effective just spraying and praying, so he works on suppressing them again, and willing the gods to make the loading quick and painless.

Bennett goes down to one knee, shoulder pressed against the pressure seal of her raptor's open hatchway. Her sidearm is brought up in both hands, sighted downrange to a centurion who's begun firing into the retreating marines, and a quick triple burst squeezed off. It's really no match for the heavily armoured soldier, but it does manage to slow it down and distract it long enough for the marines to take it down in a hail of bullets. The Five-seveN is shoved back into its holster as Knox is dragged near enough for her to help get him aboard. Cylon or no, she reaches for him when and if he's handed over, and grits her teeth as she pulls him inside. "We have got about two minutes to get our asses out of here," she tells whomever's nearest, with a quick glance across the street.

When Brina tries to drag and start moving Lleufer, he's pretty heavy for her. 200 lb and more Marine plus his 100 + lbs of armour and gear. It'll take serious effort on her part and Samtara's both to drag 350 lbs or so. And when they do succeed in dragging him, his head wound is bleeding frightfully. Ynyr's hard out of it, oblivious to what's going on, boots skidding in the snow until other hands help to lift him up into the Raptor.

Kostas' normally tanned face is pale, but she brings up the rear of the group, firing all the way. As the most injured and the civilians are loaded, she fires at the nearby centurions on fullauto, bellowing wordlessly to keep it up through the pain. She's got her eye on Amos though, waiting until everyone but him is loaded up as per his orders—and maybe seeing if she can still shield him as well.

Knox see's everyone settle down their Raptors and nods. He looks up to Bennett and tosses the flares towards the Centurions and throws the Captain a sharp salute. He's been wounded and is bleeding, like most everyone else. He takes up the rifle and is turning to back towards the Raptor's door when a series of shots impact his armor, penetrating his chest. He stumbles backwards and falls heavily into the snow. Before he can even look around and figure out what's happened, he's being dragged up and into the Raptor, radio and all.

The frakkin Centurions were shooting into the Raptor now! Seeing the Sergeant go down, Jena nudges Mallas and Jax along but runs for the Raptor, doing her best to lift Knox inside. As the Pilot takes him, assisting her, she almost falls inside beside him. Immediately, she's kneeling beside him, tending to his more obvious, immediate and life threatening wounds.

Iphigenia is herding people into the raptors, She does her best to keep firing, on occasiona having to pause to free up a hand and help a kid.

With Brina on one side and herself on the other, Nadir is doing her level best to help haul his weight, 200 pounds of marine plus his gear makes for mental math that she declines to sum up. It's that simple. Trained to haul a wounded soldier up the side of a muddy hill. She's NOT a field medic for a reason. The mud being one of those reasons. But she's doing her best to help haul him into the raptor and then, once there, to treat him. It's all about getting there, first, right?

Mallas blazes away, the barrel of his light machinegun now smoking from the sustained fire. And there's only a few rounds left, dangling at the end of the belt. Seeing Amos and Kostas still outside with him, the Private yells at the two officers. "You staying here or what!?" He fires one last burst and piles through the raptor door.

Takes the two a bit but between Sam and the MP they get Lleufer to the Raptor and pass him off to those who can heft him into it. It is only then that Brina allows herself to truly feel her own wounds. Makes for a woozy Marine but she somehow manages to get onto the wing stub and inside.

Lleufer has been dragged, pushed, and hefted up into the Raptor right along with Knox and others. Wherever Dr. Nadir lays him out. Ynyr remains limp, unconscious and bleeding profusely from his wounds, especially his left leg and his head. His rifle's been lost somewhere, dropped and skidded across the ground when he fell. When Sam removes his ruined helmet, Lleu's face is bloody. He's in seriously bad shape. Will he make it back to the Orion alive?

With Knox inside, Jena had at least done some emergency first aid on him to stop the bleeding. She doesn't move to a seat, there's more than likely not room, but she does cradle Knox until she's sure he's good to go.

Bennett can't spend any longer flitting about in the hatchway of her raptor. The remainder of the loading of evacuees is left to her copilot, and she drops back into her seat and buckles her harness with fingers that are beginning to get stiff with cold beneath her gloves. Snow is kicked up in gusts and eddies as she spools the engines one at a time, and the floodlight is reached for and switched on to assist with loading people up in the near-dark conditions. Unfortunately, it also assists the incoming centurions with figuring out where they are. Briefly, her eyes flicker over as Lleufer is dragged aboard, and there's something unreadable on her face before she's back to business with getting the bus prepped to fly.

Nadir works as fast as she can, trying to stop the bleeding, bandage what she can, pressure bandage what needs more work than just a slap of a bandaid and some applied pressure. She feels the bullet that slices through the chin-strap that holds the helmet in place. She can feel the blood seeping down the side of her neck, because wounds above the neck tend to bleed at a rather alarming rate. She has one hand pressed to the side of her neck once she settles in place beside Ynyr, one hand curled in the armor that covers one of his shoulders, keeping him in place as he's settled (or haphazardly dumped) in place. Usually she grabs for the chicken-strap and holds onto it for dear life. "I will not throw up on you," she advises Ynyr, the unconscious marine that he is, in a very solemn tone of voice.

Kostas gives Mallas a halfhearted shove as he boost himself into the raptor, something between "attaboy" and "STFU". She does one more check, and seeing all the Marines but one in, she lifts a hand to Amos in a thumbs up, and turns to try to scramble into the bird. It's not graceful. She's uncharacteristically clumsy, and breathing hard, and if she needs to take a few steps on her knees to find a place to latch in, so be it. She stays there for a moment, sweating and pale, lips twitching into a smile.

Bennett adds over her shoulder, for the medics' benefit, "Box of gauze and pressure wraps in the compartment above your head, if you're out."

"EVERYONE IN!" Amos bellows above the noise. He inches back towards the hatch so he can swing in once everyone else is clear, keeping his rifle trained on the centurions just in case there's a hold up somewhere. As the marines swing in he spots Captain Arden still boosting others and moves to help. Getting the last suriviors, then the priestess in before he too is hauling himself up and into the cover of the raptor's interior.

As the last of her charges is loaded up, Gen herself swings into one of the Raptors, reaching for one of the frightened children and curving her arms around them like a shield.

Mallas piles into the raptor. Seating? There's blood and wounded all over the floor, with medics at work and more Marines coming behind him. So he just kneels beside the door, sucking air from pain, adreneline, and the mad dash to catch the bus.

Amos just can't get into the raptor fast enough it would seem, sor a bullet smacks into his chest armour as before he's quite through the door. It doesn't seem serious though, for he's still turning to close the door as soon as he's sure he's in, calling tothe ECO as he does so, "that's all of us!"

"All right, we are full up and dusting off," Bennett calls back to her passengers. Her copilot is yanking the hatch shut even as she's easing the flight stick back and feeding tylium to the bus's twin engines with a low whine. The raptor shudders as a few shots prang off its flank harmlessly, scraping paint but doing no real damage. And then with one last sweep of its floodlight before it's switched off, the bird takes wing, snow sloughing off in droves as its thrusters kick in with a roar.

With the last Raptor lifting off stuffed full of survivors, the Centurions aim skywards and try to put as many rounds into the fleeing craft as possible. Behind the Raptors, the artillery begins to abate but the Centurions continue on their advance, running past their previously occupied office building while one stops to aim a rocket at the TI-107 and blow it in place. The snow continues to fall and while the 91st Marine Mountain Division advances northwards towards the city the Centurions begin digging in. This fight will be raging through the ruins before the first of these Marines are even released.
