Erebos Asteroid Belt — Blackness of Space
AWD #64

The space near this section of the Erebos asteroid belt in Helios Alpha is quiet, empty until a flash of light disrupts the calm. The Colonial Light Cruiser Cygnus flashes into existence, emerging from the corona of light that marks an FTL jump. Its engines ignite, and the cruiser pushes itself into the outskirts of the belt itself to better hide it from inquisitive eyes.

As the cruiser slowly maneuvers, a series of small craft pour from what passes as her hangar bay. Orion's recon group took whatever extra space Cygnus had in her hangar, and her engineers are likely breathing a sigh of relief to see all that potentially explosive metal off their deck. They angle off towards the heart of the asteroid belt, the group's pair of Raptors bringing their dradomes online.

The pilots will notice, much like the last group to recon Erebos, that there's a little bit of RF interference disrupting their systems. Their actual scanning range hasn't been affected too much, but metal-rich asteroids do create a number of ghost images popping on and off the pilots' DRADIS screens, and comms will undoubtedly be fuzzy if any of the ships get too far from each other. Which is eminently possible, given the distance they've been ordered to space themselves out. For the moment, however, everything seems five by five.

Although this mission was dealt to the Lucky Strikes, this time it's not Holtz leading the flight through the asteroids. The captain has instead delegated the mission lead to one of his senior lieutenants, the quiet Gordon "Dirk" Linden. Dirk is the first to emerge from Cygnus' hangar, and he immediately brings his Viper around on the path charted out during the briefing.

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Flight, Dirk. You know the drill. Centerfold, Stand-up, you're at the center. Vipers, you're the outriders; let's fan out by pairs."

Phin flits from the hangar of the Cygnus along with the other Vipers, forming up on Cassie's wing when he can. He flies with a bit of caution. Erebos is a place he remembers not-fondly.

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Flight, Dolly. Off and a-go. Shoes, I've got your six. On your lead."

Cassie slides easily into position, doing so in a manner that should allow for her wingman to keep up without difficulty. This is not time for showboating, after all. She's somber, oddly quiet compared to how she normally is.

Waiting for his turn to launch, Agrippa waits until Luc lifts and jets out of the makeshift hangar before before doing the same, taking off away from the Cygnes. In a way, he was glad to be off that large, flying death trap which is a poor excuse for a carrier. Rolling once on its axel, then a second time, Punchdrunk maneuvers into formation with his wingman. Agrippa knows the path they are suppose to take while on recon but he sticks with his wingman, planning on doing so until floating, spinning rocks prevent it.

[Into the Wireless] Cassie says, "Roger, flight. I'm in position and ready to keep an eye on the Raptors. Dolly, you stay safe out here."

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Flight, Punchie. All green and spaceborne. Crater, I'm on your wing."

Bringing the Raptor out and about, Jason smiles a little. "Good time for getting out and about, isn't it?" he comments, a bit lightly, before he starts making the craft into position now.

Petty Officer James Kalum sits in the back of the Raptor crewed by Centerfold and Milkshake. He is strapped into the seat next to the main hatch, and is wearing a flight suit with heavy body armor over top of it. On his right is the Raptor's heavy machine gun — locked, cocked, and loaded for bear. On the Pararescue Jumper's left is a bag filled with medical supplies and another duffel filled with SAR equipment. The PO's hand rests lightly on the heavy machine gun, his gloved fingers tapping its smooth metal surface gently — as if to keep it awake. For now his job is to wait, and hopefully he'll just be waiting the entire time.

[Into the Wireless] Jason says, "Flight, Stand-Up. Moving into position now. We'll all stay clear of getting broken by the big rocks, folks?"

Ygraine sits at her ECO station, leaving the front seat to the left of Maia's pilot chair empty. "Warmin' up the systems and good to go, Centerfold." she calls out conversationally. "How ya doin', Ginger?" Kalum may or may not realize she means him.

Luc does easily get himself ready and in position as they start off. Being careful as they start off. Letting his eyes be on the lookout as he is careful in the flight as he heads off with Agrippa behin him. Hearing the com unit as they get going.

Prepared for flying the formation they had talked about, having spent time in the sims practicing and doing light tests over and over, Maia was ready and capable for the flight. Steady on the stick, she checks and rechecks. "All clear, let's get high, Milkshake." Taking the Raptor out for the real fun.

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Standup, Dirk. Don't worry, we'll let you know if anything big shows up in the windshield."

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Flight, Crater. Copy that. Punchie, I hear you loud and clear. I'll keep my eyes open ahead. Let us be careful for now and keep our eyes open."

[Into the Wireless] Maia says, "Flight, Centerfold, good to go, moving into position."

"Just fine, sir." Kalum replies quietly to Ygraine. "I'm along for the ride, and am looking forward to the view from the backseat." The Petty Officer leans into the thrusters as the Raptor pulls away from the Cygnus. "Hopefully, I'll just be sitting on my ass all day."

Anderson arrives from the Tinyplot Room Nexus.

Myles offers a nod to Jason from the ECO seat, "I'm sure it is, sir. Let's just hope we find nothing, but good suprises today." He says in a rather friendly, but yet respectful tone.

Cygnes parks herself on the outskirts of the field, in the shadow of one of the larger rocks, which, her commander hopes, ought to keep her shielded from Cylon DRADIS. Meanwhile, the recon group moves further into the belt towards the center, where the rocks are more densely packed. In fact, there's a cluster coming rapidly into view that'll take a fancy bit of flying to get through untouched.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Dirk, Milkshake. You want either of us to call the incoming balls, or do you want us to just focus on the survey?"

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Milkshake, Dirk. You and Chopsticks focus on the survey. We should be able to spot the rocks in time, and if there's any tinners hiding in these rocks you'll probably be able to spot them easier than us."

<FS3> Maia rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Agrippa rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Jason rolls Piloting: Great Success.
<FS3> Anderson rolls Piloting: Great Success.
<FS3> Luc rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Cassie rolls Piloting: Great Success.
<FS3> Phin rolls Piloting: Good Success.

Sniper follows the same vector as Dirk, his Viper responding to his delicate touch like the Prom Queen after the big game. He's already itching to see just what the maximum safe speed is, despite all the *blips* on the DRADIS screen. He doesn't of course.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Roger that, Dirk. Chopsticks, you copy?"

It was pretty easy flying in the maneuverable Viper, Agrippa zipping by the sparse field without issue until the denser grouping is spotted, causing the pilot to be a bit more attentive to the floating rocks as they can turn his day into a very bad one real quick. He does call a warning to the Raptors though, keeping an eye out not just for himself but also for the Raptor closer to him, which happens to be manned by the Raptorettes.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Raptors, this is Punchie, we've got a thick grouping of rocks coming up, watch yourselves."

Phin sticks with Cassie's Viper, flanking the Raptors as much as he can. Not that the belt allows for them to keep particularly close quarters. He does slip around the space rocks without faceplanting. So there's that.

Shoes is keeping an eye on her wingman as well as her DRADIS and everyone around her, it all making her nervous. "This is bullshit," she mouths before she calms enough to regain her wits. While others want to showboat she doens't do much of it herself save for a bit of a barrel roll from time to time while transversing the larger clear spots between rocks.

[Into the Wireless] Cassie says, "Dolly, Shoes. How are you doing, huh? Shit your pants yet?"

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "Copy that, Milkshake, focus on the survey."

Luc keeps with Agrippa and moving through easily enough. Doing quite well as he sweeps and zig-zags through the field. Keeping it simple as he avoids it easily enough for the time being. Hearing Agrippa already calling out the warning causes him not to do so. Just flying along and keeping his eyes open.

Keeping his Raptor in place, Jason grins a bit as he hears Myles, nodding a bit more. "Let us hope so," he offers, looking out to the rocks outside rather carefully.

<FS3> Ygraine rolls Alertness: Great Success.
<FS3> Myles rolls Alertness: Success.

[Into the Wireless] Jason says, "Punchie, Stand-Up. Make sure you avoid them as well, but thanks for the heads up."

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Flight, Crater. Still clear on this end, other than the rocks. As said, keep eyes open. Punchie, how is our rear?"

Through the more sparse field, Maia manages to maneuver her ship through the asteroids with no showboating and tons of concentration. Hearing the warning through the com, her jaw sets and she prepares for a tense journey filled with tons of evasive actions. Rocks, rocks everywhere. "How's it looking from your view, Milkshake? Holding well up here." Eyes flicking constantly through the window, avoiding flying into disaster.

[Into the Wireless] There's a chuckle from Phin's wireless as he replies to Cassie. "Shoes, Dolly. Not yet, but I'll give you up-to-minute reports about that as it happens. Nah, I'm good.

[Into the Wireless] Maia says, "Punchie, Centerfold, Thanks for the heads up, just coming into them now. Careful out there."

Sniper's headed for a big one, nearly adrift. Then he just powers up suddenly, and nimbly inverts his viper, accelerating over an asteroid, which appears to be the size of three linked Pyramid fields.

Kalum leans his head back up against the bulkhead here, and closes his eyes. He tries to imagine whatever asteroid dust they are sure to fly through is nothing more then the rain on Gemenon. His fingers continue to tap the heavy machine gun next to him, and he waits — his life in Maia's and Ygraine's hands here.

Myles turns back to check the DRADIS, examinating it for a while before he turns towards his pilot, "Sir, there are many ghost echoes in the area, but I think we may have caught something real, it was too quick for me to determinate whether true or false." He says, a brow raising inside his helmet.

Ygraine watches her screens, which have occasional blips popping up on them which she outright ignores. Then one blip appears and then fades which she focuses on, frowning a little as she runs a sensor sweep in that direction.

<FS3> Ygraine rolls Ecm: Success.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Chopsticks, Milkshake. You get any blips on seven seven four, carom two?"

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "Milkshake, Chopsticks. Affirmative, a few ghost blips due the asteroids and one that was rather odd, it seemed to be real for a while and then just vanished."

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Raptors, Punchie, who is the near the blip?"

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Punchie, Milkshake. Looks like Spade's closest. Doesn't seem like anything to worry about…it looked like a high iron concentration, but readings are flickering all out over the place."

[Into the Wireless] The mention of the blips has Cassie looking at her own DRADIS, not that she's expecting to see anything herself. "Hey Dolly, this is Shoes. Did you catch anything?" Her nervousness is now full-on paranoia and the nervous-making mission has just become more so, making her antsy.

Dirk's wingman rolls right then left, the Viper maneuvering like a corkscrew between a couple tight-knit rocks. Sniper doesn't scratch the paint, but Frack it's close. An immediate break and banking roll afterward places him securely back on the Lt's starboard at three o'clock side. He listens to the chatter, glancing over at Dirk through his blast shield.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Dirk I've no confirmation on that DRADIS traffic. Check same visually?"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Shoes, Dolly. Negative, but it's tough to make out anything in this mess. Especially without the DRADIS eyes the Raptors have." He doesn't sound nervous, precisely. Highly alert, though. "We'll keep an eye out, though. If there are any blips near our position, maybe we can go in for an eyeball."

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Flight, Dirk. All right, people, let's not go jumping at shadows. Have a look, Sniper, but make it quick… if it turns out to be nothing I'd rather keep the wasted time to a minimum."

The mention of the blipping has Luc keeping a careful eye out but hearing it is most likely not in the area of them he only continues the flight. Keeping his eyes open but trying not to be too jumpy.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Havok. Wilco."

Linden holds his position at the head of the Colonial formation(not that it can really be called a formation, but still). He doesn't seem overly concerned about whatever it is the ECOs have spotted, but thorough sort that he is, he nevertheless details his wingman to check it out. The lieutenant pulls back on his throttle, as not to leave his wingman behind.

<FS3> Maia rolls Piloting: Success.
<FS3> Agrippa rolls Piloting: Success.
<FS3> Anderson rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Jason rolls Piloting: Great Success.
<FS3> Cassie rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Luc rolls Piloting: Great Success.
<FS3> Phin rolls Piloting: Good Success.

Jason moves the Raptor slightly to the side now, to avoid one of the rocks in the area, before it's back in the same position as before. The talk about the blips makes him glance back towards Myles very briefly, before he turns his attention to thee front again. Trusting his ECO when it comes to the blips, it would seem.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Punchie, Crater. Keep eyes open but as Dirk says, try not to be too jumpy. Stay calm and we got this. Flight, so far so good on this end. No visual."

Maintaining his position on the side of the recon formation, the same side as Milkshake's and Centerfold's Raptor, Agrippa continues to keep one eye out for any incoming asteroids that could intercept and disrupt the general recon formation and also an eye out for any potential non-rocklike bogeys. The ECO's potential finding has the Viper jock on a heightened sense of alert.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Crater, Punchie. I copy."

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Sniper, Milkshake. You see anything, or is it just a bogey?"

Ygraine continues her scans, remarking absently to Kalum, "I think you may get your wish. This seems like it's gonna be a snoozer. How you doin', Centerfold?"

Hearing her ECO voicing concerns about blips on the radar, Maia continues on her projected path, but her eyes are constantly moving, trusting Milkshake to alert her to anything visible from her own vantage point. "Our fare doing okay back there, Milkshake?" Speaking of the PJ. Grinning when she mentions the snoozer, "Looking good up here but rocks are thicker than that soup-like substance the Mess tries to serve us on Thursdays."

Sniper drops from his last position, banking hard and accelerating towards Ygraine's coordinates. A twist, and turn, then nothing. His Viper is a distant memory in the span of a few seconds.

Kalum's shoulders rise and fall ever so slightly here, and a wry smile plays across his lips. "Quite is good, Sir…" The PJ says simply. "Getting shot down over a planet sucks, but punching out in space is far worse."

Cassie stays in position while waiting for Sniper's return.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Havok, Shakes. I'm not seeing the money shot. Trying to confirm a higher metal concentration that the ECOs spotted, but DRADIS isn't cooperating. I can't get a sensor fix on anything other than floating headstones. Advise."

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Sniper, this is Dirk. If there's nothing out there, bring it on back in and we'll get back under way. I'm not in the mood to waste time on sensor echoes."

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Dirk. Wilco. On your six in two."

Phin likewise stays with Cassie. Close-ish to Jason and Myles' Raptor. As much as they can be 'close' to them in the current situation. He listens sharp to his wireless, and squints at the rocky starfield.

For the moment, Myles keep an eye on the Raptor DRADIS, trying to not miss any new blips that might pop in or even if that odd one decides to appear again. "Are the asteroids tormenting our visibility, sir?" He questions.

Sniper's Viper floats up, apparition like from below the rag-tag formation to retake its place as wingman to Dirk. He glance over, at the Lt. offering him a shrug - silent over the com system.

Linden acknowledges his wingman's report, waiting for Anderson to return to formation so they can continue along. Once Sniper is alongside, Linden returns the other man's shrug with a toss of the head, and the Colonials resume their patrol pattern, knifing and weaving through the asteroid field as their electronic eyes continue to sweep the space around them.

The rocks have thinned out for a short while, but the Vipers at the head of the formation can see that up ahead, they're beginning to cluster more densely again. One large piece of rock floats into one of these clusters; it's shredded by a series of subsequent collisions, sending a shower of rocky debris hurtling outward. The pilots will again need to be on their toes, as it appears they're going to have to fly right through it.

Cassie maneuvers just fine as pieces of debries flies her way, it causing her to swear under her breath. This really is not fun anymore - not that it started out being enjoyable to begin with - and she's growing increasingly grumpy.

As more rocks show up Luc does squeeze in between two and does some nice flying through the area. Keeping and eye to try and make sure that Agrippa is keeping up with him. Though the rocks do keep him a bit occupied as he does have to do a maneuver.

Phin veers and wags his wings to do some tilting around the incoming debris. He catches a few stray pieces on the wings, but none of it breaks anything important. Or scratches the paint. He half-turns to watch the progress of Cassie's Viper.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Raptors, Crater. Careful out there, more rocks incoming. Punchie, you with me still?"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Shoes, Dolly. You OK over there?"

First zig, and then zag. That seems to be how Jason is weaving his way through the asteroids, avoiding them at the moment. He shakes his head a bit as he listens to Myles. "Not too bad so far," he replies, before he adds, "How are things back there?" Still keeping his eyes on the rocks outside now.

[Into the Wireless] Cassie says, "Dolly, Shoes. I'm right as rain, thanks."

For much of the next hour, the mission is uneventful; other than the occasional close call with various rocky pieces of flotsam and jetsam, the Colonial pilots encounter nothing worth mentioning. This part of the field, at least, seems as empty as it looks. Whatever Myles and Ygraine may have spotted on their sensors a while ago, it doesn't seem to want to come calling on the Colonials. If there's even anything out there. Which, judging from the reaction their intrusion has recieved thus far, doesn't seem to be the case.

When the rocks thinned, Centerfold had been able to take a few breaths, rolling her shoulders, but as soon as they become more dense, the Raptor pilot is in her element again. This is what Maia lives for, the challenge, the adrenalin, the thrill. Confident, not cocky in her abilities, she keeps her eyes peeled, her hand on the stick, and her complete trust in her ECO.

It's so empty, in fact, that Linden decides it's a perfect opportunity to stage a little training exercise. He takes a few moments to lay out his idea over the comms; one of the Vipers in this case, Linden himself plays target, while the ECOs in the Raptor attempt to establish a missile lock on his bird. Whichever ECO can get and hold the lock first wins. If neither of them can manage to score a 'kill shot' within a couple minutes or so, he wins. Simple as that.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "This is some borin' crap right here. Anybody know any good dirty jokes?"

This grouping is much denser and the path that Luc squeezes in between the large asteroids, the path closes up before Agrippa can follow so he is forced to pull up, breaking off from the paired formation for the time being. For now he is more focused on keeping clear of the various rocks in the area than finding Luc to return to formation though he does know which way the recon aptrol is going.

[Into the Wireless] Kalum says, "What's green and yellow and eats balls, Sir."

Sniper chooses a line well, half-rolling his Viper and maintaining course through the worst of it. He manages to break, drop and thrust past what his previous course didn't account for. "Frackin, quarry out here," he mummers to himself. Still - better the Picon he remembers.

Myles turns for a moment to answer Jason, "Things seem to got calm now, sir. No signs of odd blips nor anything that isn't a rock." He says with a brief smile forming on his lips.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Lords of Kobol, Ginger, that shit is scary coming from a medic, but I'll bite: what's green and yellow and eats balls?"

[Into the Wireless] Kalum deadpans, "Gonorrhea."

"Stupid rocks… If it wasn't for them, we could have brought some good books or something," Jason mutters as he moves past another one of the rocks now.

[Into the Wireless] Jason says, "And here I thought it was a Pyramid team or something…"

It most likely will not be too long before Luc is trying to find Agrippa once more. Trying to keep an eye out for his wingman. Lifting up a bit and by the time the joking and the drill start it does seem that they will be back together again. Listening as Kalum pulls a joke. Trying to kep attention on the surroundings but it is boring at the moment. Starting to chuckle at Kalum's joke, as it finishes.

Phin snickers at the comm chatter. Because he can't help himself. He at least doesn't turn his comm on while he's doing it.

It's so empty, in fact, that after a couple of dirty jokes pass between several of the pilots, Linden decides it's a perfect opportunity to stage a little training exercise.

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Chopsticks, Milshake, this is Dirk. You're weapons free. Catch me if you can."

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "That does sound like some hands on knowledge, medic."

Linden smiles into his mic as he accelerates, maneuvering his fighter to put himself in front of the Raptors. Then he begins to manuever, attempting to keep the Raptor's electronic eyes from getting a fix on him.

[Into the Wireless] Cassie says, "That was so frakking gross!"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Flight, Dolly. This a VD lecture? Because I am all about safety on infil. Shoes, I'm going a little wider of the Raptors while they're playing with Dirk. Shifting like a Viper-length on your three-thirty."

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Flight, Milkshake. Well ain't you just a frail frakkin' flower of femininity, Shoes. Won't wear skirts but a little VD grodies you out." She giggles. "Attempting to lock target."

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "Copy that, sir, will do my best."

[Into the Wireless] Kalum says, "Flight, Rescue-1. As your Pararescue Jumper I'd like to remind you that flys spread disease… So keeps yours closed."

[Into the Wireless] Anderson whistles, "Lookie-lookie. Freckles' got some game.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "You tryin' to pluck my petals, Spade?"

As the recon flight has gone pretty much smoothly without any issues, Agrippa is slowly beginning to zone out, especially when boredom seems to take over the patrol. Instead of focusing on the game that Drik is playing with the Raptors, Punchdrunk is not entertained and turns his attention out into the space field as they continue flying along the patrol path. More zoned out than being alert right now.

Orders are given and Myles start to check his Raptor equipment in hope to lock the missel on the fake target, his light green eyes seem to be a bit tired at this point.

Sniper inverts, rises above the loose formation, then stabilizes at his current speed to get a better look. He chuckles to himself, shaking he's head at Yggy.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Shakes. Don't you think that ship already sailed?"

Phin tries to keep his eyes on the road, while sniggering. Still cognizant enough to keep his wireless muted for all juvenile giggles at the banter between his flightmates. He tries to keep an eyeball on Dirk to watch the game, much as he's able. And periodically check his instruments and eyeball for hostile activity. There's stuff to look at, even without a lot to look at.

[Into the Wireless] Shoes chokes back a bit of laughter before shaking the amusement off. "Alright, guys. Let's behave, huh? It's important for us to keep our attention on what's out there, not on sophomoric humor."

Jason keeps the Raptor flying, shaking his head a little to himself at the comm chatter. Keeping quiet for a few more moments before he speaks now.

[Into the Wireless] Jason says, "You guys are starting to sound like my father's poor attempt at making a comedy…"

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Yes, Mommy."

Linden is weaving and twisting through the asteroids, trying to shake off the Raptors' missle lock. He's able to put a rock in between himself and Ygraine long enough to disrupt Milkshake's lock, but Chopsticks' sensors still have enough of a line of sight to home in on Dirk's fighter, and soon he's got good tone. He'll have to maintain it a few seconds longer to officially score the 'kill' though.

One day Anderson with be sitting around, recounting this little reconnaissance mission with dramatic hand gestures and facial expressions to his grandkids. Sure - that'll happen. The Viper is a phenomenal craft, and you should fly it like you stole it. Sniper breaks, and noses up letting the others flyby before dropping down: terrifying, exciting, intense and humbling. The mission was designed to fly at a certain speed; Too FRACKING slow so he'll just check their six while the Lt. has a little fun.

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Milkshake, Dirk, gonna have to do better than — Ah, frak. Sneaky, Chopsticks, sneaky."

Myles attempts to mantain the target locked, his eyes are solely focused on the sensors now. His face holds a rather pleasured expression on his face as he attempts to predict whatever Linden is going to do.

Ygraine seems less inclined to play the game, or distracted, or just not strong on the gunnery; thus far she's almost gotten a lock but been a hare too slow.

Linden momentarily disappears behind an asteroid, and it's enough to break Myles' lock, while still keeping safe from Ygraine. A moment later, though, he rolls back into view, allowing the ECOs to try again.

<FS3> Opposed Roll — Ygraine=gunnery Vs Havok=4

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Close, Chopsticks, but no cigar. How about another go?"

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine mutters, "Frak…Dirk, Milkshake. Lemme at it again."

[Into the Wireless] Havok says, "Whenever you're ready, Milkshake."

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "Dirk, Milkshake, Chopsticks here. I'm tottaly up for a second try and I know you can do better than that, Milkshake."

There's a brief yawn from Jason as he moves the Raptor around another asteroid, shrugging a little bit. "Getting that lock soon?" he offers, sounding both tired and amused at the same time.

Ygraine lets a little whoop as she gets the target lock. Keeping it, of course, is another story.

Cassie leaves, heading toward the Tinyplot Room Nexus [Out].

Myles try not to be surprised by another asteroid and lock Havok, "Bet it won't get away from me this time." He says with a faint grin.

Anderson continues to patrol the small squadrons six, giving them distance. He pilots his Viper from flank to flank, watchful - maybe daydreaming a little about better days, but as always flying the /Frack/ outta' that aircraft. He'll have to thank the knuckle draggers later.

And again Linden hears the missle lock warning, this time as both Raptors get a clean lock. He keeps manuevering, again trying to break the locks.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Frakking cow's titties on Hephaestus' backside suckin' Zeus' cock!"

Phin waggles his wings at Anderson as the other pilot's Viper passes on its little patrol. He restrains himself from engaging in anything terribly aerobatic, mostly watching the Raptor game.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Dolly. I haven't forgotten about those beers, copy?"

<FS3> Opposed Roll — Myles=Gunnery Vs Havok=4
< Myles: Success Havok: Failure
< Net Result: Myles wins - Marginal Victory

Ygraine balls up her fist and bangs the edge of her console in a rare display of temper when she loses her lock.

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Dolly, Sniper. Copy that. I'll even buy for the F-N-G." Spoken like the veteran of…four months in the squadron that he is. "Don't think Erebos has a tap, but we should get on that when we're back home."

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Sniper, Dolly. Wilco."

Myles stay watchful to the movements of Linden, trying to follow them with the console, "You won't get away this time!" He mutters to himself, applying more of himself on this attempt.

Finally, Linden's luck runs out. With another series of evasives, he's able to break Ygraine's lock once more, but for all his efforts he can't seem to shake Myles as easily, and Chopsticks' lock persists long enough to call it a kill.

A sigh crackles over the comms. "You got me, Chopsticks," Linden grouses; the shrieking of the missile lock warning on his console can just barely be heard in the background. He slowly throttles back, moving to resume his place at the center of the patrol formation.

In fact, oddly enough, when his voice sounds over the channel again a moment later, that shrill tone is still audible. "Hey, 'Sticks, I get the point. You got me," he repeats. "Now would you knock it off so Betty'll quit shr—"

He never sees the missile twisting through the asteroids that kills him.

It comes seemingly out of nowhere, the only warning being the streak of white of the missile's contrail that appears a heartbeat before Linden's Viper turns into a sheet of flame. It's only after Dirk's sudden death that his killer becomes visible: a single crescent-shaped Cylon Raider. Once it seems to notice Dirk wasn't alone, however, it suddenly turns tail, looping around a rock to zoom back the way it came.

Phin is still chuckling from the dirty jokes and exchanges about beers runs with Anderson when Linden, seemingly, explodes out of nowhere. "What the frak…!?" It's gasped out, and it takes him a sec to regroup from the shock of it, and another to spot the Cylon raider through the debris of his former flight lead.

From his location, Anderson only sees the white flash of the explosion. A sudden, stick jerk rights his Viper and raises it enough that he can tell the derbies aren't from an asteroid impact. "Frack," he curses - game face dropping over his features instantaneously. Over the coms he shouts, "Contact, contact!"

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine lets out a gasp, which is followed by the obvious: "DRADIS contact, enemy fighter, four four mark six carom nine! Dirk is gone - " she chokes.

Rocks, rocks, clear space, rocks, Dirk getting painted again, rocks, rocks, Dirk getting painted again, Dirk blowing up, rocks… wait, what the frak! Agrippa suddenly snaps out of his cruise control and quickly scans his DRADIS, just more random blips of metal deposits in the asteroids but the dissipating cloud of what remains of Flight Lead's Viper is spotted on the other side of the recon patrol. With a curse, he kicks the thrusters up, knowing that he will have to maneuver through the field to get to the after the bandit.

Fresh off its kill of Linden, the Raider zooms off into the rocks, but it seems to want to have a go at Linden's wingman as well before leaving. A ray of light reflects off the crescent-shaped fighter's fuselage, its single red eye bobbing from side to side as it moves in for the shot.

"Hades, Lord of the Underworld… Be merciful." Kalum states quietly, craning over ever so slightly so that he can look out the hatch window — seeing that Linden had no chance to punch out. "Poseidon, dark-haired god of all waters, by whose will alone do sailors fare in safety. Lord of the black sea depths, swirling dark and deep, swift in thought, sure in deed, fervent in feeling, the ocean's caprice is yours, O Poseidon; overwhelming one, I praise and honor you." He offers up a quiet prayer now, without keying his comm for the others to hear, and makes ready for what is to come. He actually slackens the straps some on his harness — making sure they aren't so tight that he cant release them in an emergency.

"What the…" Jason begins, frowning a little now, until he actually spots the Raider. "Oh Frak…" he begins, letting out another sigh. "Okay, seems like the time for playing is over, and business starting." Keeping the Raptor in place now.

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Milkshake, Dolly. Copy. Coordinates received. Sniper, moving in to cover you." If not as fast as he'd like, with all the rocks to fly around. "Soon as I can."

Myles let's out a gasp as he watches Liden blow up, he quickly shifts from the missles to the ECM trying to suppress the opponent as soon as possible, "Sir, let's keep an eye for other possible opponents, it's very unlikely he is all alone here, don't you think?"

Spotting the flash of the explosion from the killed Linden, Luc does go into his full alert. Heading for it. Trying to remain radio contact. Trying to get closer and trying to listen to the others.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Milkshake, Crater. Copy that. Punchie, Are you with me? Follow me and we'll try to get a drop on them."

"FRAK! FRAK!" Getting a birdseye view of the explosion, the light bright in the darkness, Maia opens her mouth to call back but hears Ygraine. Dirk… "Do your magic Milkshake, you got this." Keeping the Raptor steady, watching for anything on her screen or out her window, on high alert.

"You wanna Dogfight you Fracking Toaster," Anderson growls switching to an intercept course and accelerating. His thrusters flash brightly. He liked Dirk - and now he's pissed. What he lacks in actual gunnery talent he'll make up for in zeal, resolve and balls.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Crater, Punchie. I'm with you, going after the Raider."

The Raider's salvo misses Anderson cleanly, though it too remains untouched. It seems to notice the arrival of Anderson's squadmates, however, and apparently doesn't like the odds; after its failed attack it turns tail and zooms back into the maze of rocks, though it does make a token effort to return its pursuers' fire.

Phin finally gets his Viper through the field and near enough to the position of the Raptors and Anderson to try and get a weapons lock.

Kalum rests calmly in the back, his fingers tapping the heavy machine gun next to him. His face is a stern mask, but unreadable. The Pararescue Jumper listens carefully to the radio, waiting for a sign that anyone is in trouble

Ygraine grits her teeth. "Dammit, we need to kill that thing before it alerts any others out here!"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Sniper, Dolly. I got your six, man."

Sniper trades paint with the raider, cursing as his rounds pepper a drifting asteroid to powder derbies and space dust. He jerks his head around, the Viper making the same course correction milliseconds behind the direction of his eyes. Thruster turn, spark, and burn hot. "Frak me!" He glances towards the Raptors, knowing he owes them one for sure.

Ducking past a rock, then another, Agrippa reaches the opening where the Raptors are and he sees the offending Cylon that just killed their flight leader. Eyes narrowing, he kicks his afterburners in for a brief moment to close in, choosing a higher angle of attack as he comes from above so he doesn't get in the way of his squadmate's fire. Leading the juking tin can on his reticule, once he is in optimal range, his twin autocannons begins pumping out projectiles.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Flight, Sniper. Got passed me. Light it up!"

"Looking around now, Chopsticks," comes the reply from Jason as he keeps the Raptor flying, near enough for the ECO to work his magic. "Get the jam session done?" It's offered a bit lightly, before he nods a little bit at what's being said at the radio.

Keeping pace with Agrippa, Luc comes in hot and is trying to keep out of the way for his mates while trying to get a clean shot at the raider. "Wrong group to attack, mofo." He says to himself as he tries to take aim. Keeping out of Agrippa's way as he tries to leave an opening for his wingmate.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Punchie, Crater. Leaving room for you to get in a shot as well. Take the opening."

Myles grumbles as he misses on the first attempt. The ECO don't seem to give up, "Will do my best, sir, let's blow up that toaster." He says, keeping an eye on the ECM.

Hearing the com talk, Maia remains silent, preferring to keep the ship steady and away from the Raider and the rocks while Milkshake does her stuff. "Go for it.." the murmur for herself as she sees the Vipers going for it.

Ygraine is just not on it and it's pissing her off. She swears softly in Leonese, fingers not-quite smashing the keyboard in her urgency.

The Raider jukes erratically as it tries to evade the Colonial fire. It fires off a shot of its own, trying to dissuade its pursuers, but to no avail; the shot goes wide and shreds a small floating asteroid instead as the Raider itself is raked by a pair of KEW salvos.

Phin bites off a "Frak" as his guns go wide of the fleeing Raider. He continues to pursue, trying to keep his Viper in sync with Anderson in the rocky quarters of the asteroid field.

Myles smiles as the sensors show the damage caused by Luc and Agrippa on the Raider, he keeps trying to block the enemy targetting systems with the ECM as the tide starts to favor the Colonials.

Sniper's Viper barrels in behind the Raider, dodging asteroids and rolling out munitions. He's living up to his call sign tonight for damn sure. Another curse, then he drops the hammer. If he can't hit the fracking toaster soon, he might just /hit/ the fracking toaster! A little nudge between friends never hurt. Much.

Agrippa is now on the Raider's ass with a vengeance, trying to do his best to stay there as he continues to chase the hostile tin can through the asteroid field. It vaped one of their wingmates so the only punishment it deserves is death. Death by kinetic weapons. Dodging around another asteroid, Punchdrunk gets another opening and fires off another burst of KEW, lighting up the local area.

With every confidence in her ECO, Maia continues holding the Raptor steady while murmuring a prayer to whatever Gods may be listening this day. She says nothing more yet, but the look on her face is stoic, utter concentration.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Flight, Punchie, still on its six, Hades is getting a new frakking toaster for Christmas."

Kalum continues to listen to the Comm chatter, but with the amount of jamming being targeted against the Raider he doubts there will be much of an issue with this fight.

It does seem that Agrippa and Luc work well together as Agrippa get a nice shot in which also allows an injuring shot from Luc to screw a bit with the enemy. Keeping his fire on it to bring it down as fast as he can.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Punchie, Crater. I am with you buddy. Coming in from your side. Flight, Let us bring him down fast!"

Push it. Push it. Almost there. Just a little closer. Not yet. Wait for it then nothing. Sniper blasts another asteroid, derbies peppering his Viper as he blasts by at breakneck speeds. "Sonofa…" And, hence the Call sign.

With two other wingmates landing brutal shots onto the Raider, it was more or less bracketed perfectly for Agrippa to decapitate the Cylon Raider as it was already blown open with holes. The triple KEW cannons mounted on the twin wings and vertical stabilizer pumps out shot after shot, landing dead center right at the cockpit, shearing it right off with its firepower. Agrippa follows the tumbling metal corpse until it slams into a rock, as if to make sure tha frakker is dead and after he does, he banks around to rejoin the other Viper and Raptors.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Flight, Punchie. Raider is scrap. I repeat, raider is scrap. Good shot there, Dolly, your shot made it a dead fish for me to pummel."

Phin brackets Agrippa with some style, at least. He veers away from the shower of Raider debris Punch's kill-shot leaves, scanning about for any friends the thing might've had.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Milkshake, Sniper. How do we look?"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Punchie, Dolly. I set 'em up, you knock 'em down, man. Nice splash. Flight, we got anymore company out here?"

Luc does pull around to avoid the debris as well and seems a bit pleased at that revenge at least. Keeping his eye out for more. Trying to not let them catch them off guard this time.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Vipers, Crater. Good job on bringing it down. Keep eyes open and let us keep the raptors safe. Flight, any update?"

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "Milkshake, Chopsticks. I'm getting a faint signal in the course that Raider took, it's fully stopped and quite close to us. Do you get anything different?"

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, " Cygnus - Actual, Sniper. Be advised Dirk is down. Contact with one, repeat contact with one. Target eliminated. Standby for further."

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Anyone check if Dirk ejected? Is there an emergency beacon?"

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "He'd have activated it if he was alive, Punchie."

[Into the Wireless] Myles says, "The odds for that are quite low, he was distracted with the target thing." His voice sounds somewhat grim.

Phin says nothing about Dirk. His head turns to scan the asteroid field around where the flight leader missile-exploded, but it's not as if he expects to find anything.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa released a muffled curse though this was more in the background and not picked up too clearly. "Who's Flight Lead now? We need to finish this."

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Flight, Crater. I got the lead for now. Let us get through this nice and safely. Keep your eyes open. ((Mostly since of highest rank among vipers, for longest time))"

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Crater, Dolly. Copy that, man. Sniper, still got your wing."

The asteroid giving off the DRADIS emissions is one of the larger ones in the immediate area. Signs of human exploitation are obvious once the pilots start getting in visual range; unlike Vesta, it doesn't look like a full blown mining operation was going on here. Rather, it appears as if this particular rock was being used as a small refining and storage facility, if the large tanks and relative lack of heavy machinery are any indication.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Orion's recon flight wasn't the first to come along. Clearly, a battle was fought here, and recently. Most of the structures that make up the storage station are dark, their interiors opened to space in multiple places by what look like impact holes from heavy weapons fire. Tiny shards of metallic debris glitter in space around the asteroid.

It appears that whoever was here didn't go down without a fight, though. Weapons scarring is present on several of the nearby asteroids, and what looks like an impromptu (and now wrecked) gun emplacement has been set up at the edge of the storage station. A single torn up Raider sits in the cloud of debris above the outpost, spinning slowly and listlessly over what was once its prey.

Kalum remains silent in the back here, but when word comes over the radio that something has been discovered he unclasps his harness. He drifts up towards the co-pilot seat in the cockpit, and settles back in. The Pararescue Jumper is trained for Search and Rescue, which means he is relatively good at spotting places survivors might have taken refuge in. He looks currently for any signs of any intact structures, any places where oxygen might be venting. "Ensign Vashti," the Petty Officer says quietly, "try scanning with Infrared for any heat signatures out there." He turns his pale eyes towards the back here. "See if any of the structures are warmer then the others. It might be a sign of an active life support system, power, or even living souls." He suggest respectfully.

[Into the Wireless] Havok | The com crackles. "Sniper, Cyg — *static* — ual. Co — *static* Cylon — *static* reported. *static static* — bound. Recommend — " From there the transmission from Cygnes devolves into static. They're far enough away with enough junk between them and the cruiser that coms will be unreliable without closing the distance.

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Flight, Sniper. On our own."

Luc continues to fly but he does slow down a bit. Trying to control the area. Pulling to the side to scan. Letting the raptors check for signs and so on. Hearing the signal and how they can not get a good read.

Needing no further direction, Maia pilots in closer to the location, holding steady, "How close do you want me, Milkshake." Glancing back, nodding to Kalum and offering a quick grin before watching for anything that shouldn't be there. When the com crackles, her head pops up again. "Cylon reported? Inbound?" Making guesses on what the transmission would be, keeping radio silence for now.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Flight, Milkshake. I'm not entirely sure that Raider's really and sincerely dead."

Well, the Raider looked dead, anyway. When the Colonials approach, the damaged ship's red eye begins to pulse anew, and it comes alive with a start, guns blazing indiscriminately as it charges the Colonial formation. It's quickly joined by another, healthier looking Raider that had been hiding in the supply station's wreckage.

Phin winces at the static from the Cygnus. He spends a moment frowning and trying to parse it, but to no avail. And then Ygraine speaks and the zombie Raider reanimates. So, more immediate concerns.

Ygraine waves Kalum off a moment with a sharp motion of her hand as she works and then she barks into the com.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Cygnus, Punchie. Say again, we do not repeat. Say aga—"

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Raptors, Crater. Able to get any reliable reads? Flight, we should try and gather upe her as soon as we can to close the gap to Cygnus. I am not sure that we should leave anyone behind. So we need to finish up here quick and head off."

Anderson pilots his Viper into a scout, security position, noting Dolly as his wingman. With any luck the team up can prevent any future surprises to the small squadron. He's almost into the position he wants when all Hades breaks loose.

Hearing Ygraine's words though, soon in time as the raider comes alive it does seem that he is not that caught by surprise. If perhaps not as fast as the others. But he does turn to get to shooting right away.

Jason leaves, heading toward the Tinyplot Room Nexus [Out].

The floating Raider gets the bulk of Agrippa's attention and he brackets the Raider with his crosshairs, but as he does so, he hears the static response from their makeshift carrier, Cygnus. He opens the comm and tries to get a clearer message back, asking for the capital vessel to repeat the last message though whatever he was saying is cut off as the Cylon suddenly erupts in cannon fire. Reflexes kick in and he breaks his Viper hard right to evade the fire, only to pick up the second Raider coming in so he accelerates towards it, apparently drawing sleeping beauty on his tail.

<COMBAT> Raider2 has been KO'd!

The first Raider's reanimation comes as a surprise, but not enough of one to actually give it a fighting chance against the battle-hardened Colonials. Its sudden snap shot clips Luc's wing, but that's the most damage it's able to inflict. The other Raider is marginally more successful; it emerges from hiding closest to Agrippa, and rakes the ensign's ship with a damaging but not life-threatening shot.

Anderson inverts his Viper, cannons blazing nearly immediately as the first Raider comes to life and enters his field of fire. "Frack me!" He presses down on the trigger, laying munitions out like fireworks on the holidays and peppering the Hades out of it as it spins towards a certain death we like to call Dolly.

Luc get hit on the right wing and it causes him to spin a bit and lose his own target, cursing a bit in a murmur to himself he tries to regain the target. Focusing his eyes while checking the others as well. Seeing Agrippa take a hit. Trying to fly and take the heat away from Agrippa so he can play the bait. If possible.

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Flight, Crater. Thanks. Now let us get the heat off of Agrippa."

Dolly is not a very intimidating name for certain death. Phin gets in a good shot on the Cylons' undercarriage controls, though, so exploding occurs. It's not far from where Anderson hit the thing. He's usually higher on assists than kills, so he aims for more tandem shots in general. That done, he veers around toward the remaining Raider.

The head on exchange with the other Raider did not reward Agrippa with a hit from his quick spray, instead he is hit in turn. Breaking away, the young Viper stick is more than willing to play bait as he goes through a barrel roll though at the last second, he flips his fighter around so while he is sailing backwards, he fires off a quick burst at the Cylon before flipping back to the right heading, not daring enough to fly backwards for long inside an asteroid field.

<COMBAT> Raider3 has been KO'd!

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Sniper, Dolly. We got him, man. Coming about for support fire for that bandit Punch has on him."

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Dolly, Sniper. Cpoy that. Light the Motherfracker up!"

Anderson flips a bitch, thrusting into a pursuit position on Dolly's starboard side. The Viper lurches violently forwards, pressing Sniper back in the cockpit seat. If you're going to do it - do it a little rough. At least that's what his eleventh grade mathematics teacher used to tell him. Ah, Ms. Juniper. She had such a nice set of, "Die you fracking toaster, die!" And yet, more wasted ammo to the Sniper.

Seeing pilots taking hits, Maia tightens her jaw, but hears their voices over the com. The team was intact, the Vipers still airborne. "Get em boys.." And then they do. In her Raptor, Centerfold is quietly flying, listening to the transmissions over the com, keeping as steady and invisible as she can. "Nice going, Milkshake."

Kalum's head is craning around in the cockpit as the dogfight plays out. He watches as the tracers burn through the void of space, and winces slightly as the Vipers are struck. Still, no one is leaping out into the vacuum.

Now that nifty little maneuver worked better than Agrippa had expected, only having tried it in the simulators before and learned the maneuver from veterans when they were describing their own dogfights or ones they've seen. His burst of autocannon punches right into the Cylon Raider's cockpit, that red visor shattered to pieces along with the rest of the middle of the craft, splitting it in half. The Viper pilot pumsp a fist in his cockpit before returning to his fellow pilots, doing a quick barrel roll in celebration.

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Flight, Punchie, Raider vaped."

Phin fires his cannons into empty space. Or, at least, space now occupied by the debris from Agrippa's shredding of that Raider. He veers up a little to try and get a vantage and eyeball for anymore oncoming death.

With the destruction of the pair of raiders, calm finally reigns. New debris has been added to old, and the various hunks and shards of metal glitter as they spin in and out of the shadows cast by the nearby rocks. No further activity can be spotted at the storage station, and an examination will reveal the station to be a near total loss; whatever raw materials were here have been spirited away, and the structures and equipment have been damaged so badly their only apparent value would be as scrap.

[Into the Wireless] Ygraine says, "Good job, Punchie. Anybody else think we should get the hell out of here?"

[Into the Wireless] Luc says, "Indeed. If there is nothing more here, let us head for Cygnus and try and establish communication with them again."

[Into the Wireless] Phin says, "Flight, Dolly. Gotcha, Crater. Coordinates in to the big boy's last position."

Havok | The com crackles once more with a long range transmission, but this time it can actually be made out. Mostly. "Flight, Cygnus Actual, I say again, *crackle* we are en route to your position. *crackle* have detected a Cylon baseship inbound *crackle* your sector. Get your asses back to base, I have no intention of being around when they *crackle* get here."

[Into the Wireless] Agrippa says, "Copy that, Shake. Anyone get that last message from Cygnus - Actual? Did they say they had Cylons inbound?"

[Into the Wireless] Anderson says, "Flight, Sniper. Cylon baseship inbound. Have your six on the egress."

Anderson breaks hard, letting the squadron bypass his Viper so he can take up the rearguard mantel. He keeps his head on a swivel. The bird he's piloting performing the same maneuver every so often.

With the message from Cygnus it seems that Luc will direct the others to get back towards base, leading them along as they do. Getting out of there as fast as they can.

The Colonial pilots don't waste any time getting back to Cygnus once communications with the cruiser are finally reestablished. The combination of their haste, the asteroids, and the cruiser's tiny landing bay make retrieval a little dicey, but soon enough all the ships are back on board, and by the time they are, Cygnus' FTLs are spooled and the jump home is plotted. By the time the basestar gets within DRADIS range of the outpost, Cygnus and the survivors of the recon group are long gone.
