Landing Zone - Piraeus
Just outside the fences and gate to Sheridan, the first official town on the new planet, is a large area about one hundred yards by one hundred yards covered in perforated, steel planking. The dirt below seems to have been tamped down solid and the planks sit several inches below a 'step up' to the rest of the terrain. There are several green lights surrounding the plating at the edge to mark it as visible from the air. Along the edge are a few Vipers and Raptors parked under semi-permanent structures with basic ground crew kits nearby. A cinderblock shed sits at the edge, the entire top half covered in plexiglass that acts as a control tower, several long, whip antennas on steel supports sit on either side.

Sheridan's main LZ is a flurry of activity in preparation for the upcoming mission to Aerilon. The crew has been downed for nearly twelve hours, and the evening's waning to dusk by the time the fuel trucks finish their work, and begin backing away from the massive hulk of the rhino. Its running lights are on, and a light rain darkens the tarmac and leaves dusty trails along its flanks as its pilot and ECO power systems up one by one.

Carrying with her the most compact of the field kits that are designed specifically for med-evac situations, Nadir makes her way through the ebb and flow of personnel fueling the… The doctor pauses to eye the vehicle that is being fueled and fussed over, eyes narrowing subtly as she does so, only continuing forward after a measured glance is spared around. Noting that, indeed, it is not a Raptor or series of Raptors being prepped but that which isn't a Raptor, the doctor shakes her head once, a mild gesture, then paces around the vehicle itself.

Marcus is watching everyone load up. Once again, as he's been told that he knows too much about Piraeus to go on the mission, he was dressed to go, and it shows in his agitated walk between the troops and watching them load the Rhino, pausing as he sees the Doctor pacing. "Is there an issue, Doctor?" he asks as he watches Samtara's walk.

Randy has her helmet attached to her EOD field kit at her hip and is lugging a black hardcase along with her. It's about a foot and a half deep, a chunky thing. She waddles in her gear towards the Rhino's rear. If she didn't have absolute murder in her eyes, it might be a funny sight. Her jaw is set as she boards via the ramp onto the Aft Lower Deck to find a good secure but easily accessible place for the case, just scoping things out.

It's arguably questionable sending a senior wing officer along on this particular mission as well, but in matters of landing aircraft behind enemy lines, Saint Clair is simply the most logical choice. She's joked to her squadmates about carrying cyanide pills in her bus, though there might be some truth to that. Helmet under one arm, she emerges from the rear ramp with a clipboard ready to pass off to a scurrying technician, one hand raised to shield her face from the light rain. A few words are exchanged, and there's a polite nod to Randy as the marine approaches. She's not getting in the way of that murderous look, though.

Angelis is there. She's silent as she loads herself up onto the Rhino. Unlike the murderous Randy, Tabi's completely impassive, everything's been shut down in terms of outward displays of emotion. A far cry from the grinning irreverant that she usually is. Setting herself down where ever she's supposed to be sitting, the young Marine stares off at the other side of the enclosed space, eyes distant as her gloved hands work over her equipment, making sure that everything is good to go.

After making not one but two complete laps of the vehicle, Nadir returns to stand alongside the Marine LT and eyes him, then the what-ever-it-is then the Marine again. "What is this . . thing designated as, Lieutenant?" comes the question from the doctor in a genuinely curious tone of voice. "I thought I'd seen all the vehicles on the deck but this is a new breed of some sort."

"It's the Rhino, sir. No designation other than B4D-455. You'll find the common area suitable for your medical area, Doctor. My Marines will be on the dorsal and chin guns, and I will have a shitload of pissed off Dogs that I just taken off leave, so if you see bikini tops under combat vests, that's why." Marcus says as he watches them gear up. "They're chomping at the bit for something to take out their agressions on, and those poor sumabitches pinning down the pilots are going to be the ones to feel it. Speaking of.. FLYNN!" he calls out, looking for his favorite EOD boomer. "A word!"

Randy gives a curt nod to the CAG as she boards. As she starts poking around in the passenger area, looking for a panel that might open or for some storage space up above, she hears a familiar voice shouting her name. She steps towards the seats to deposit the case under one of the seats when at the last moment, she thinks better of it and takes it with her back down the ramp. "Sir." When she gets to Marcus, she puts the case down next to her and salutes.

Setting one hand around Randy's shoulder to huddle up with her, Marcus leans in and speaks in terse terms with her, locking eyes with the little EOD Sergeant as he does so.

Bennett sends an amused look Samtara's way, but doesn't intervene. She's got work to do up front, anyway, to get this flying fortress airborne. Off she goes, helmet tugged on as she moves back up the ramp and up to the crew compartment. "Skids up in five minutes!" she calls back before climbing into her seat and harnessing in.

Randy relaxes from her salute as Marcus leans in, keeping her hands at her sides. Dark eyes pin Marcus, nearly black in the shadow of their posture and the dying light of the sun. "Sir. I will not jeopardize this mission." After this, she withdraws from Marcus and then stoops to grab the case before hightailing it to her jumpseat, making it just to the ramp before it starts to close. She turns briefly back to salute her friend more casually, less murdery. It's a goodbye, but hopefully not forever.

The jump to Piraeus is standard. But the old drive in the Rhinos tends to whine in the last moments of powering up, just before the jump. When they finally hit orbit around Aerilon, though, all is well. One piece. So far the think handles like a heavily armored yak, but there is a bit of comfort in the knowledge that they are surrounded by an inch of rolled titanium plate armor. The two turrets are already manned, likely, and there's a post in the center of the rear boarding deck. Atop that post is a .50cal HMG and there is a plastic trashcan bunjee'd to the wall filled with pre-linked .50 ammo with more green boxes stored in the armory. There's more than enough room for a lot of people to be shooting all at once from the rear ramp. But below them, they can see the area where the Raptors were shot down. There's a lot of thick black smoke in the area, like maybe several whole towns are burning. From this altitude, though, its hard to make out. But the gunner in the chin bubble probably has a pretty intense view right now.

So far, so good. There's a moment of discernable tension in Bennett as the tank spools up for its jump, but when she reopens her eyes, they're coasting along in picture perfect geosynchronous orbit. Her breath is released slowly, and she refocuses on the not trivial task of maneuvering the massive bird in for atmospheric entry. There's a great shudder and a roar of engines waking up as she throttles up and begins their dive planetward, belly-first.

Randy boarded last after her little 'pep talk' from Marcus. "Doctor. We're going to be focusing on getting the ECOs first. If an ECO looks like they're going to be captured by the APF alive, we need to shoot to kill. Can you handle that? Because I'm going to need your guns, not just your Medical skills if you want to get out of this alive too." She stoops to open up her black case and pulls out some caribeners and straps. Then she moves to grab a tether and connects a caribener to one of the cargo tielines. Then she connects /another/ tether to this one, but shorter. Then she walks out to the the 50 cal and tests for length.

Gray is strapped into the bottom turret position, locked and loaded to deal with anything hostile on the ground. It is his first time out since the Bacchus affair and he's just a little on edge. That being said, he's also muttered many prayers to Ares. Then the dive planetward begins anf…well, frak, his stomach drops amd he just can't resist screaming like he's on a roller coaster. "Woohoo!"

Once they're all heading down to rescue the pilots, Tabi steps up to her position on the top turret, settling in, getting herself reacquainted with the turret gun, murmering softly under her breath in Gemenese, probably offering up a prayer to her chosen God, even though the offering was made before they left Orion. Doesn't hurt to add some extra prayers in the mix. This is super-serious Angelis, no whooping or yelling, just quiet, cold and ready for action.

Having secured as many gurneys as she could stack and web together, along with a more discreet pouch containing the standard issue final option for those who aren't going to be strapped to, Nadir glances up just the once to nod to Flynn. "Of course, Sergeant," comes the quietly calm reply, the tone of voice both carefully neutral and precise. "I am prepared for a variety of eventualities." This said she doesn't, not once, look through any available view port as she checks the gear that she's carrying and ensures that the medical backpack is snug and in precise position on her back, along with the sidearm that's worn at a slight angle to avoid it getting in the way of the other gear she's sorted with.

<FS3> Angelis rolls Alertness: Good Success.
<FS3> Randy rolls Alertness: Great Success.

"Thank you," Randy returns to Sam. She pulls a photograph out of her armor and brings it to her lips. She no longer needs to look at it. It holds a different meaning for her now. With her hand steadying her on the 50 cal, she murmurs, "Dad, we could really use some help right now…" And then they start to dive.

<FS3> Bennett rolls Alertness: Good Success.

The descent continues without incident - perhaps shockingly for Bennett. No alarms going off, no shorting equipment. Everything is still functional. Seems the people she assigned to work on it actually got the job done properly. As they drop through 15,000 feet, though, they can start to feel something. It had been tugging at them, all of them, since they started their descent. A feeling. But now that they are getting closer, they know it. There's something else there with them. Many somethings. They've filled the ship. There's an electricity to the air, a sense of anxiety and purpose. A need to hurry. Even in the turrets, the Marines can feel eyes on them, everywhere. Solidarity. It feels a lot like the bunker, but a different sort of energy. Positive. Confident.

Randy closes her eyes as they ride down. Her rifle is slung to her back, as quiet as she is. She takes a deep breath and then opens her eyes, speaking into the channel, "Our loved ones are with us." Whatever /that/ means. Randy sounds sure, /dead/ confident. Unshakable. "I might need to pull one of you off a turret to cover the 50 cal," Randy relays. "If that's the case, I /need/ you Major to tell me if they need to stay on the turret since I won't have the same visibility. Got it Major?"

The shipboard wireless crackles to life, St. Clair's voice only barely recognisable over the tinny, interference-riddled audio: "ETA is twelve minutes, and we will be going in hot and under heavy fire. I will try to get us in as close as I can, but we will need to clear a path before I can land." The rhino lurches and shudders again, joints groaning in protest as gravity begins to exert its pull in earnest upon the massive aircraft's bulk. There's a nod from the pilot, her arm shaking slightly as she fights with the craft's ornery flight controls. "This is not my first rodeo, Sergeant," she explains in a low voice. "I will let you know."

Gray feels… well, he can't quite put a word to it, but it's there…and it's making him a little let's-go-and-do-this antsy. Then Randy pipes in over the comms and he somehow…calms. "Roger that." With everything else he's experienced in the last few weeks, he makes a quiet, unconscious decision to just roll with it. There is SOMETHING in the air, so to speak, and…well, with all the stuff about with Piraeus? Who is he not to go with it?

Eyes wide open, Tabi feels that presence, and when the Sergeant's words come over the comms, she sighs softly. Not relaxing, oh no. There's too much at stake to actually relax, but she does manage a small smile and a quietly murmered, "Thank you." At the gun, Angelis rolls her shoulders and quickly flicks her head to the side, popping the bones in her neck. She keeps her gaze focused out the window, waiting for the go so she can start laying down fire and killing the enemy. Oh yeah, that slightly zoned stare, distant, a whole heap of murderous intent lies behind that. No one messes with her people.

Focusing on the gear at hand, at the head count of all the marines and crew on this Rhino, aka flying tank with turrets, Nadir is rechecking the contents of the first aid kit strapped to her side. Her lips move as she lists all the items in the kit before shifting gears and beginning to count upward, silently, lips moving still, in prime numbers. Some people swear when they're anxious or afraid, the doctor counts.

"Frak " The voice on the shipboard wireless sounds panicked; it isn't Bennett's, but her erstwhile backseater, a fairly fresh-faced young man like many of the wing, it seems, these days. "bogey. Bogey incoming! We've got a raider inbound. Two-two minutes." Seconds later, the soft chime of DRADIS pinging a single contact. "Hold on, I am going to try to shake our friend." That's Bennett, measured and a good deal calmer sounding than she likely feels. "If either of you can get a lock on it, fire at will."

The rhino promptly lurches into a gut-twisting dive, nose-first, as they hurtle toward - and then through - mach one with a massive BOOM that cracks through the cloud cover.

Randy slides back away from the big gun in a crouched position. She quickly grabs hold of the strap but doesn't wind her hand up in it. That's a good way to dislocate her shoulder, or worse. Thank some god for protocol, since Randy secured the black case after she was done pulling the equipment she needed from it. Might be a good time to get back to her seat and fasten her seat-belt, but the Marine is too focused on /not/ possibly getting bonked around to make much progress back to her seat. She gets about halfway there, kind of quasi-rappelling her way without jumping away from the surface…walking it back.

The moment the Rhino begins that gut-twisting nose-first no longer defying gravity plummet toward the planet below, Nadir does the only wise thing. She resolutely closes her eyes, gets a firmer grip on the harness keeping her in the jump seat, grip white knuckled, lips pressed in a fine line. Breathing through the anxiety.

Angelis just braces herself as best she can as the Rhino picks up speed and they hurtle through the clouds, heading toward the ground at breakneck speed. She doesn't actually grab onto anything, instead drops into a crouch, bracing herself between the turret and the wall, if possible, hands locked around her head, head down between her knees, because gotta keep that head safe.

Joy and fear, adrenaline and inexplicable calm…all wrestle for dominance within Gray as they dive and punch through the sound barrier. All told, he keeps his focus down his gun, trying to get a visual on the toaster chasing them. "When I have a good visual I'll light the frakker up!" he shouts. Headset or no, it ain't quiet where he is…and the slightly overly loud response also helps dump some excess energy.

<COMBAT> Gray attacks Raider2 with Kew but MISSES!

As soon as the ship is comparatively stable enough, Tabi's up and in her seat, intent on blowing that Raider out the sky as soon as she gets a visual. It's not a long wait either. There's a soft grunt as she fires the 30mm canon at the oncoming Raider. "Take /that/, frakker." Angelis mumbles over the comms, followed by a grunt of satisfaction as her aim proves true enough to at least injure the enemy ship.

Gray can't be sure if he hit or not, but he sees the Raider take a hit and grunts happily enough…and fires again

Dodging anything in a vehicle this size is no easy feat. Bennett grits her teeth, and hisses into her helmet with the strain of hauling on the flight stick, at the last possible second, to pull the rhino out of its dive and into a not terribly smooth roll to starboard. It's at the moment her foot comes down on the paddle that she happens to glance over her shoulder, through the windscreen, in the opposite direction. And she nearly does a doubletake. "Keep that frakker off me," she says into her headset, voice a little breathless from exertion. "I am going to double us back and hit a hard burn. Someone please confirm visual of a smoke signal at seven o'clock and counting down."

<FS3> Randy rolls Body+Body: Good Success.
<FS3> Samtara rolls Body+body: Success.

"Frak," Randy murmurs as she dives to grab hold of her seat when she feels the bird start to roll. She grabs hold of one of a strap and holds on for dear life with both hands, trying to tuck herself into a ball againt the forces induced by the ship. "What smoke?! Call out!" she grits, not ready to let go of her death grip. When she has a moment that she's not getting roughed up, she slithers into her seat and straps herself in.

"It's like being in a sardine can, with a bunch of well armed marbles, an unknown quantity of munitions, explosive fuel, and hundreds of moving parts, plummeting toward the ground - at high speed - while twisting and banking all the way down," Nadir says this, in a rather quietly astonished if somewhat horrified, tone of voice to no one at all in particular. Anyone close enough to hear her probably thinks the doctor is well and truly off her own rocker, maybe.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Butch to Apollo One, do you copy. We have visual on you. Over."

Gray glares down his turret, firing steadily at the Raider chasing them, aerobatics-be-damned. As soon as he sees it partly explode and peel off, crashing towards the ground, and doesn't see another one around he lets out a shout. "Frak yeah!" He glances around one more time to make sure there's nothing else chasing them before allowing himself to relax just a bit and enjoy the ride for a moment.

Bennett switches frequencies and speaks into her radio briefly as she maneuvers the lumbering bird around at breakneck speed. The raider lines up for a shot on them again, and once more succeeds in not so much as scratching her paint. Whether due to skill or luck on her part, they may never know. Firewalling the engines, St. Clair dives again, zeroing in on the spot where she spotted the signal moments ago.

Randy is happily strapped in her seat. Happily might be an overstatement. The Marine Sergeant is gritting her teeth in anticipation as she hears Bennett reach out over the radio. "Come on. Come on." She looks over to Sam after the woman is done with her little spiel. "You okay Doc?"

Taking a yet tighter grip on the harness keeping her in the jump seat, literally keeping her IN the seat and not careening or rattling around the interior of the Rhino, Nadir pries one eye open and manages a short nod to Flynn. "Determined not," and there's a brief pause, slow intake of breath through her teeth, "to throw up. Bad form," said before she resolutely closes her eyes again, not that it helps.

<FS3> Samtara rolls Mind+body: Good Success.

Bennett is bringing the bird in as fast as it'll handle, engines throttled up to full burn as she angles them in on an attack vector. "We are coming in hot," she informs her crew, voice smooth as silk despite the tremor in her hand from the exertion of maneuvering the beast. "Crew on the ground is in bad shape; as soon as you have a shot at a target, take it. I will be landing as soon as I am able." The ratcheting of something being pulled from its assembly is heard as she reaches for the firing mechanism on the rhino's chain gun.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Apollo One, Butch copies. We are thirty seconds inbound and will provide covering fire. Hold your position. I repeat, hold your position."

"Major, this is Flynn. Drop the ramp. I'm tied in and on the 50 cal," Randy reports as she quickly unstraps and takes hold of the strap just in case as she scrambles towards the 50 cal. As soon as the ramp begins to open, she's done checking the big gun. She pats briefly. "Be good to me," she murmurs before pulling down her goggles.

As they near the ground Tabi shifts in her seat, peering forward to get a better view of her targets. Ah! There they are. She actually grins wickedly for a moment, before unleashing hell on the hostiles. Well, attempting to, at least.

Reaching one hand up, Nadir secures the helmet down on her head just a fraction of a millimeter more. Tightens the chin strap, squints as the first gust of air starts to roll in through the ramp as it opens.

"Lord Ares, guide my shots…" Gray mumbles quietly as the attackers resolve into his view…and then he sees /who/ is attacking. "Frak." He fires, angrily.

Angelis gives a small huff of annoyance as her bullets do nothing! She pats the controls, muttering under her breath in her native language, not the slightest bit deterred as she narrows her eyes and brings the turret around slightly, trying again.

Flying at this altitude they can first make-out the flashes of gunfire coming from the ground, but when they fly over a clearing they can see that these aren't Centurions or adults. These are more of the APF children. They are dressed like Marines, right down to the armor, but are so much smaller. They're almost all aimed upwards at the Rhino as it passes by. But for those who have a good view outside, as they pass over the red smoke they can can look down and see the four crew members. One male is laying on his side and firing over an embankment and Kelsey can be seen because she's the one talking into the radio. Her face is looking up at them. Their bodies are halfway into a creek. By their feet, almost fully in the creek are two unmoving bodies - one female and the other male. The water upstream is clear. The water downstream is decidedly red. They can see an APF fighter flanking around the smoke, though. They bring up their rifle to fire at Kelsey and the other male just as the action passes out of view and behind the cover of trees.

"One down…" Gray mutters as the teen on the recieving end of his shot sprawls back, re-targeting the next fighter he can line a shot up on. His face has gone from the mixture of emotions from earlier to something hard and furious. There are all sorts of thoughts going through his mind, sacred and profane alike. Whether it is adrenaline, the force of his ancestors alongside him, or just the fact that he currently wants to drag the Cylon leadership in front of a wall and execute them personally for forcing this upon him. "…and frak the rest of you."

One doesn't survive the war this long because they suck at their job. And Bennett's no exception. She's absolutely determined to get her men back, and a few pesky guns and rocket launchers aren't going to stop her. Not yet, anyway. The rhino roars in on a flyover of the clearing as shots ping uselessly into the dark, then banks sharply to come in for another pass. "Flynn," she speaks into her shipboard wireless, "I am going to try to land at the mouth of that creek, and cut the enemy off." That is, place them in between the APF fighters and the downed aircrew. "Angelis, I will try to get you a better firing solution. Call your shots."

Practice makes perfect, and that's not really what Randy has a lot of on these big guns. The first targets get out of range before she can lay down any fire that does anything, but with the second burst of fire, her aim finds her target, probably by sheer fluke….and because she's pointing a big frakking gun at kid-heads and bodies. She stops her burst as she sees the opposing fire, /their/ people. "Butch, visual on our men, on your six." No time to think about why the others aren't firing. Why aren't the others firing? Randy shakes her head and grits her teeth as she readies herself for another pass.

"Roger that Butch," Randy relays back over comms.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Apollo One, Butch-" Bennett's voice cuts off abruptly, and there's a stuttered breath before she tries again, "Apollo One, Butch. Do you read me?"

Focusing now on that which can be seen from the air, either through the front of the Rhino or through the open ramp, Nadir speaks for the first time into the tactical channel. "None of our people may be able to walk, crawl or run to this Rhino. I'm going to need help hauling wounded in. I'll treat them IN the Rhino," she puts that last bit in as an adviso. Just a tactic nod toward logic.

Being all the way on top of the Rhino, Angelis' view of the ground is limited at best. Enough to see the rifles aimed up at the ship. Enough to see the kids wielding those rifles. If that's something that bothers, her? Well, Tabi doesn't let on. Enemy is enemy right now. She'll deal with everything else later. "Major, I got one on our three." Tabi's voice is cool and calm as it comes over the comms to the pilot.

"I'm going with you." Randy relays quickly with a curt nod to Nadir. "Butch, tt looked like we have two down and not sure about the mobility of the other two. Send me a gunner," Randy relays quickly before nodding curtly to Nadir. "I'm going with you."

"Landing in five," Bennett informs her crew calmly, one gloved hand on the flight stick while the other grapples with the ornery craft's chaingun assembly. Rounds chew through its hapless target with a RAKAKAKAKA that shudders through the surrounding tree cover. "Four. Anderson, you have the heavy. Two. One." And suddenly, the ground swoops up beneath them at a frightening angle, engines churning up water and mud and grass into a fine, damp mist around the wide open ramp. "Go."

[Into the Wireless] Bennett speaks hoarsely over the wireless, switching to Kelsey's callsign, "Knickers, stay with me. We are down and coming to get you. Stay with me."

A single glance up, around, then directly to Flynn before Nadir nods. "Alright." She's on her feet as soon as the Rhino lands, having unfastened the harness first with a bit of a fumble and effort. She checks the pistol at her side, a move that she is visibly cautious about doing, then joins Flynn on the ramp, moving her shoulders to settle the weight of the backpack and the body armor at the same time. A great deal of difference between a lab coat and body armor.

Randy holds on as she trains the gun down on the APF when they come back into view, clipping one of them in the chest. So many bullets fired. So many misses. She's going to keep firing till the last second, but she takes a moment to pull her rifle forward more in the sling, pointing the muzzle downwards and off to the side.

Gray nods to the order. "On it…" And thus begins a Canceronian fire drill as several of them switch positions to maximize combat effectiveness. As soon as he's in the seat of the HMG, he reacquires his previous target…and immediately lets a burst out, sending the poor bastard on the other end tumbling backwards as the whole burst hits home.

As Gray gets ordered onto the .50cal, Tabi hotfoots it down from her turret. Not even waiting for orders, which'll probably get her in trouble at some point. He makes it in record time to the HMG as Tabi's sliding into the seat down below, taking up the controls and shifting around, getting ready to lay some cover fire should the need arise.

Randy takes point, pulling her fifle round and holding it to her cheek as she runs out quickly for someone of her height. An APF girl emerges in her peripheral vision and she turns to shoot the girl three times in the chest with armor piercing rounds, taking her down. Gray's cover fire helps significantly and as they move, BAM! Another to the head of a boy not older than 13, 14? It's hard to tell. They're all just targets now as she mows down whatever is in their way.

The rhino rolls to port, then to starboard, then hops up a few feet before settling in for a slightly jarring landing. Its engines are kept at full spool, anticipating taking off again shortly, and it's positioned such that enemies on all three points of ingress can be targeted. Bennett keeps half an eye on her console, and a steady hand on the chaingun mechanism, taking down the far too young soldier who begins sprinting in on their position. It doesn't bear thinking about too hard, and she hasn't the time for it regardless. Her ECO, meanwhile, is unstrapping himself and getting the cargo area prepped for incoming wounded.

Following Flynn down the ramp, Nadir has the pistol in a two handed grip, elbows bent and as soon as she clears the Rhino she follows the marine's lead and takes aim at the first of the APF shooters that are assaulting the air crew on the ground, the Rhino itself, and everyone else along with it. There's a grim set to her expression, but she sights and fires all the same.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Nadir, this is Butch. Stay on mission. I have Flynn."

Alastair arrives from the Tinyplot Room Nexus.

Bennett disengages the chaingun, which is of limited use at this angle anyway, and unharnesses herself from the pilot's seat. Her sidearm is slid out of its housing underneath, and she checks its clip briefly as she books it for the ramp.

[Into the Wireless] Samtara says, "tac1=Copy that, Butch. Heading for the wounded. Over."

One can only do so much. The adrenaline coursing. There are too many, just too many for Randy and Sam to keep on top of. There's a split second when Randy sees a girl take aim at her. She could dodge, but that would leave the CMO vulnerable. Instead, she shoots back, trying to do as much damage with the burst she can get off before a round finds its mark square in her chest. She falls quickly and hard, but she still has her rifle, and she's going to try and use it from her prone position. A sitting duck.

Gray somehow looks even more furious as Randy takes a hit. "Why. Won't. You. Die." he mutters under his breath. Flipping the fire selector, he adjusts his aim and squeezes the trigger down. "Frakker."

From her position in the lower turret, Tabi sees Randy go down and she stiffens, eyes wide. There's a split second of hesitation, enough that her shot misses, though there's not a word as she reels herself in and gets herself focused again. Hearing that the pilot has Flynn, well, that helps a little, too. Angelis moves the turret a little, angling to provide better cover for the folks out there.

Samtara has to enter the treeline and up over a very slight rise in the terrain in order to see down into the creek. The red smoke creates a think mist that makes it difficult to see and the lack of wind in the trees creates something like a fog. But she can definitely make out what's going on. Elena and Kelton are both in the water, Kelton looking bad and very pale. Possibly dead. Elena is bleeding from her face and her hand is wrapped in bandages. Kelsey has a bunch of holes in her left shoe that's bleeding and a fresh GSW through the back. Alastair is busted up kinda bad but is actually awake and -laughing-. He has a gun to his head. Kelsey is holding a gun towards Kelton's head… why? Because Kelsey has her back to a fifth figure - an APF soldier. The soldier has a rifle aimed at Kelsey's head. The kid, about 14, is yelling. "Five! …Four!" Yep, he's about to fire.

Nadir flinches as she sees Flynn take the incoming weapons fire and, resulting from same, hitting the deck as result and it's instinct as much as training that has her starting toward Flynn's position. The words over the com bring her up, short, mid-stride, and she speaks in return before refocusing on the APF enemy combatants, a nice bit of mental soft-shoe there, as she resumes taking aim at those around them, stepping down off the ramp in the mud churned water and heading toward the treeline and then following the slight rise of the terrain before finally seeing down into the creek and the madness contained therein. Her reaction is immediate, rushing headlong toward the armed standoff, hearing the countdown as she's running forward, the pistol held in that two handed grip and arriving in time to hear 'Five! Four!' and shouts out: "Stand down, soldier!" as she skids to a halt in the mud and seeping water, training the pistol on the soldier. "Drop it or I will end you, I swear it," her curled fingertip resting against the trigger, eyes narrowed subtly, all of her focus on this one moment, this one shot.

Bennett grabs a medkit on her way down the ramp, and throws it open once she reaches the downed marine. She's not terribly familiar with the contents; it's been, literally, years since she's last used one. But after some fumbling, and the use of one hand to staunch blood flow, she manages a passable enough job at bandaging up the EOD. "Go," she murmurs, then rolls back to her feet and backs up the ramp with her pistol hoisted at the unfriendly who won't die.

Despite the wounds to his right hand, it's the only hand that Alastair can used. He's laughing, but listening. And his head lifts just a little, his face stained with mud and blood, his hair matted down where he slipped into the creek. His right leg is covered in tattered bandages and a makeshift splint as his left arm is shattered to shit, covered in blood, a fresh GSW torn through his shoulder, before he hears the voice of the CMO and he reacts. The pistol leaves his temple in a flash before he fires off every round he has left in the magazine, three shots in all before the weapon kicks empty.

A look of surprise creeps over Gray's face as he unloads into the remaining teenager. Bullets punch into him but the little toaster-loving shit just won't drop in spite of an obscene amount of lead headed his way or into him.

"Frak," Randy mutters as Bennett decides to come down and save her life, but nothing reaches the comms. She watches and provides cover fire for Sam as the CMO heads off without her, progressing through the rest of the battlefield towards their evac targets. "Thanks," the EOD Sergeant says to the CAG before getting up to her feet and sprinting in the direction Sam went. She won't bother even firing as she hears the gunshots coming from that direction, her rifle at ready.

The kid hears the shout from Samtara and wheels the rifle around. He's firing befre he even comes on target to the CMO. Sam's bullet hits him before he has a chance to bring it all the way around. With his left arm up, the bullet enters his left side into his lung. Alastair's bullets hit him in the leg, then the stomach and shoulder. The kid staggers to the side and falls against a tree, dropping his rifle. The guy turns and tries to run and ends up falling to his knees, trying to get up again. He manages it, but doesn't get but maybe five feet before falling face-down. Kelsey went into a ball at the firing and when it all clears, she looks up and towards Al, then towards Sam. Yeah, she's in schock at seeing the doctor with a smoking pistol.

Dropping the expended pistol, Alastair falls back against the bank of the shallow creek. "Cavalry's here, Knickers." Apparently that's his new nickname for Bennett as he closes his eyes. "I'm just going to rest my eyes for a bit.

"Safety on," she actually says that outloud. Thus engaged, and pistol returned to her side, Nadir rushes forward without paying any actual attention to the now deceased APF shooter and is at Kelsey's side a few strides later. "Rest your eyes on the Rhino. It's that big behemoth over there, and we brought marines," she's checking Kelsey over she speaks. "I'll treat you onboard, I promise. But we're moving now. I'll come back for the others." A look is sent to Piers, "Are you ambulatory or do you need a hand to get there?"

Kelsey looks like she took some shrapnel to her left foot and the wound on her back goes in just below her kidneys and out the same side. She just nods slowly to Sam. "I can walk there I think." In a lot of pain, but she should make it. She looks exhuasted and her whole face and suit are covered in mud. "Kelton is the critical. Alastair is urgent surgical. Elena got knocked out and her hand is messed up bad."

Randy comes over the top of the rise in terrain just before the creek bed. You rang Sam? The Marine is here. The first thing she does is locate the enemy, scanning the area. Then she walks down right over to the downed APF boy, points her rifle at his head, and fires. "I want one to stay on the 50 cal and I need the other gunner down here stat to help with the wounded." There's no way they can move these people and keep their arses covered. "I want a gurney here stat!" she calls as she gets back to the wounded, surveying while keeping out of Sam's way. Barring Sam asking for her help, she keeps an eye on the perimeter, her rifle ready. She tries not to look at the wounded..at Kelsey's face where the tree splinters hit her…at the unconscious on the ground.

It's hard to say whose shots take the beleaguered youth down first, but Saint Clair pivots and fires with the reflexes that are just as applicable to pistols as chain guns. She doesn't stick around beyond making sure he's not moving; sidearm holstered, she heads for her seat and indicates for her ECO to assist with bringing people on board if need be. She, meanwhile, is spooling engines back up and prepping systems for imminent takeoff. "Angelis, please go and assist with the evacuation. Anderson, man your station in case we are besieged again."

Kelton is already on a makeshift gurney, made from his and Elena's vests and two saplings. Alastair shakes his head. "I'm spent." he says, and not in the good way as he weakly flexes his left hand and winces as he tries to pull himself into a seated position. "Get the two unconscious ones first." he says as he tries to push himself up, before slipping back down into the mud with a whimper.

As the last surviving attacker goes down in a bloody hail, Gray takes a deep breath and does a quick check over the weapons load on the 50 cal. He's got a breather and he didn't load the gun to begin with, so he's not going to be /totally/ idle. "Roger that." Once he's made sure everything is good to feed if he has to open up in a hurry, he goes back to scanning the various ex-targets for any sign of movement as well as doing a series of checks around his field of vision…just in case.

"ECO on board, now," Nadir counters without actually pausing to engage in debate with Piers, sharing a nod with Kelsey once the pilot indicates that she can make it to the ship. "Flynn, I need a hand here with Piers. Get him to the ship. I'm going for Kelton, he's the other ECO, correct?" she fires this question at Kelsey to confirm and is already on her way down to the makeshift gurney. "Butch? I'm sending Wescott and Piers to you, Flynn is assisting Piers," leaving no wiggle room. "I need an assist to get Kelton while I retrieve Heron."

"Copy that, Major." Tabi responds over the comms, leaving her position in the turret and making a beeline off the ship, pausing only to comandeer one of the gurneys. "On my way, Doc." It's a bit of rough going, these things probably /not/ designed for off-roading, but she pushes it onwards, sometimes pausing to pull or tug, but she gets it over the rise, and then it's comparatively smooth sailing on the downward slope. She halts it as close to the stream as she can, making sure it's secure before wading in to join Nadir, "What do you want me to do, Doc?" Tabi asks, looking at the Doctor and awaiting orders.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Butch copies, Nadir. I am sending Angelis out to assist. We are ready to take off as soon as everyone is aboard."
[Into the Wireless] Bennett adds, "I suggest expediency, by the way. We may have encountered only a single raider on the way in, but it was almost certainly a scout."

Kelsey makes a quick nod to Samtara. "Aye, sir. Kelton is the other ECO." The pilot struggles in the mud and after a few false starts, she's able to get to her feet. She puts some weight on the foot but its clear this is excrutiating - which means she won't fall asleep on the walk back. Using a tree for support, she leans down and polices up the remaining survival radios and stuffs them into her survival vest, also grabbing the guns and doing the same with them. That's when she looks to Randy. There's just an empty look in her eyes. She blinks unsteadily a few times and then hobbles a bit to wait. Seems the JG isn't going anywhere by herself. At least not without her ECO.

Harnessed in, with the great beast running at idle and the sound of gunfire still ringing in her ears, there is little for Bennett to do now but wait. Wait for the marines to return with her people. Wait to see what the doctor can do for them. Her hand curves around the flight stick and uncurls, in subtle agitation.

Taking in Heron's condition in a single sweep, Nadir changes course immediately. "Reassignment," she says without looking up, frowning briefly, intensely. "Flynn, I need you on Heron's evac. Better allocation of body mass to evacuee ratio," she says as she gently extracts Heron and carries her to Flynn and gently rests the young pilot beside Randy, handing Heron off, literally. To Angelis she angles a nod to Kelton, "The stretcher is makeshift but it'll do, haul it to the Rhino. I'm with Piers," and to him she moves, getting one arm around him, guiding his arm over her shoulders and setting a pace for the Rhino. "I believe phrase, people, is 'Flank speed'. Lets move."

[Into the Wireless] Samtara says, "Butch, en route."

"I'm with you, sir.." Alastair uses all the support he can get, eventually leaning slightly on Samtara as he uses his one good arm to support against the CMO and hobbles towards the ship. "Let's get out of these frakking woods, el-tee.." he murmurs as he moves up the ramp with assistance.

"That spreads us too thin Doc. We need at least one Marine with hands free covering our arses." Then she calls out over comms, "Bennett, any ETA on reserve APF forces? Any chatter in the-" Randy cuts out as Bennett chimes back in. "Roger that. Frak. Yeah, we're going with your plan Doc." It might be a blessing that Elena hasn't been eating as much lately. "Yes sir," Randy relays to Dr. Nadir at her new orders. "You heard her. Let's get back." Then she calls out over the wireless. Randy flicks the safety on her rifle and then moves forward to where Elena is. Randy gets down into the water and pulls Elena further in so she can get the pilot over her shoulders into a fireman's carry, wincing as her wound opens up. Oh well. Then she pulls them both out of the water to head up the rear of the medevac train.

"Copy that." Tabi does precisely as she's told, rolling her shoulders, then reaching down to grab up the makeshift stretcher as best she can. After adjusting her grip a couple of times, the Marine's moving. Angelis hauls the stretcher up the embankment and falls into line with Randy, Samtara and the injured pilots/eco's as they make their way back to the Rhino.

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Negative on any intel regarding APF forces, Flynn. I will try to give you a heads up if that changes."

Kelsey watches Alistair carefully, making sure he's up and moving. She waits for him before turning and Hopalong Cassidy starts moving as quick as she can to keep pace. Once up and into the Rhino, she collapses onto the seats and rolls onto her unwounded side. Ten hours on the ground, plus being awake for twelve hours before that? her eyes lid and she watches everything else without a word.

"Everyone a gurney," Nadir instructs as she has each one unsnapped and laying on the floor of the Rhino by the time Angelis and Flynn arrive with the wounded they're helping aboard. Once everyone IS aboard she will speak into the com again, "Butch, our quartet is now aboard. Heron here," she indicates with a gesture, "Kelton here," next as she's guided Piers to the one in front of her. "Wescott, I want you on a gurney before this Rhino lifts off. You sit up like that it's going to compromise your medical treatment enroute. Lets not do this the harder way."

Alastair settles onto the gurney as ordered as he flops into place and rolls his head back to close his eyes in the process. "Our movie tonight is Shirking Duties with Lieutenant Wright, the story of a female officer on leave who falls in love with a Petty Officer who pretends to be an officer to woo her." Zzzz.

"All in," Randy confirms Nadir's assessment over the comms. "Butch, take us home." She doesn't care if everyone is in gurnies or not. If Kelsey makes it, she makes it. Randy stoops down and sort of hunches forward to try and gently lay Elena out. It's not perfect, but she holds Heron by her flight suit before she hits the gurney and lets her head down gently. Tired, panting, and bleeding, Randy stays there in an awkward position between gurnies to catch her breath.

Once back on the Rhino, Angelis again silently follows orders as she works to get Kelton's unconscious body up onto the gurney that's ready and waiting. The makeshift stretcher helps some, as she uses it to rest one end on the gurney, then moves around and lifts the other end. There. Unconscious ECO up on the gurney and ready for treatment. Tabi steps back, then frowns and heads over toward Randy, "Sarn't," She says quietly, "Come sit…" She makes it a suggestion, quietly posed as one hand reaches out, lightly touching Flynn's shoulder.

Kelsey groans and looks to the open gurney. just a few feet. She rises with some trouble and hobbles her way over there before nearly falling onto the gurney. She's going to pass out here momentarily.

As the orders come around to take off after the four downed aviators are retrieved, Gray tenses up just a bit. He's /hoping/ takeoff goes smoothly. He's hoping. Hoping. Knock on whatever hard surface is appropriate to the moment. Even still, the four new arrivals get a sympathetic nod from him: Even if he might just be a dumb jarhead to them, he is /very/ glad they seem to have gotten all of them out alive and in one piece (albeit for certain strained values of 'one piece' in a few cases).

"Copy that," Bennett murmurs over the comms, and wastes no time in getting the rhino's engines throttled up and ready for dustoff. The grass beneath the craft is flattened as she peels it off the ground ass first, and then nose. It's not particularly graceful, but it gets the job done without jostling their wounded too terribly much. "I will close up the ramp once FTL is spooled for jump," she informs the crew, and banks the heavy bird in a wide arc as they gain altitude and the ground begins to fall away rapidly.

"Need to assist the Doc," Randy murmurs as she pushes up. "They need fluids and blood and-" Randy's not a doctor by any stretch, but her mind's clearly still in mission mode even if her body is starting to give up. She grabs Tabi's hand to use it to get up to her feet. It's right there. Might as well use it. She looks reluctant to follow Angelis. Still she straps herself into a seat for takeoff and also uses her long tether that's still dangling from a tie off point, just in case she has to unstrap from her seat.

"No you don't… I can help the Doc. I'm not bleeding from a chest wound." Tabi shakes her head, willingly letting Randy use her hand to get over to her seat. Angelis even double checks the EOD's buckled in safely before plopping herself down next to Randy, and strapping herself in.

The takeoff goes a lot more smoothly than the insertion did, and as the ramp closes up Gray finally allows himself to relax, slumping back in the chair for a second. After gathering his breath for a moment, he turns to the others and takes stock of the four wounded. "Alright guys, if I can be a hand tell me /exactly/ how…"

"Flynn, gurney," Nadir remarks as she's already working on securing each gurney to the deck, talk about hand dandy tie downs. Each gurney is secured, then each patient is, in turn, secured. "As in, on a gurney, you took a hit as well. Everyone NOT on a gurney and NOT presently sporting a bullet hole of any kind, secure yourselves or what ever needs to be tied down." She glances up to share a nod with Angelis, "Thank you. Now, to work," and she returns to work on Kelton, surveying his wounds as she pulls on a pair of gloves, hands a set to Angelis. "Check her hand, we need to reduce the swelling before I can do any work there. This said, she examining the chest wounds that Kelton has and swapping out bandages as she works.

Oh another order? Flynn's hands begin to shake with the adrenaline leaving her as she unstraps herself and stumbles over to get on a gurney that hasn't been occupied yet. For the ride home, she'll turn her head to watch the others and the Doctor work, chewing at her lower lip until finally she zonks out, but for different reasons than pure exhaustion.
