Its the airspace over a strategic depot! Fascinating!

The fighter sweep the day before effectively swept the skies of fighters in the region, albeit temporarily. Word is the Skath are gathering Raiders and attempting to get them to Renado Air Base, but they have to come in from across the planet to help reinforce. What that means is that the Arpay are going to keep the Skath fighters busy while a pair of strike packages head for different railyards near Domingo. The Ghosts will launch from the Orion and take the more heavily defended target with Predators running defense suppression while the Raptors load out for heavy bombing.

The flight in is errily quiet. Dropping down through the atmosphere provides a lovely display of greens and pinks in the auroras, the light fading towards the late afternoon and eventual sunset. There are already dradis spikes from search radars from the air defenses to the north, at their target area. Passing down through 30,000' they can see the darker color of the concrete and gravel rail yard about 30 miles away, just peeking out from scattered clouds at 10,000. Not a fighter or hint of a skath in the air. Its creepy to experience over Calumet where the air is usually floating a pair of bandits in any direction, just out of dradis range.

Melissa is pushing a Raptor, heavily laden with 2000lbs bombs. The outboard missile racks are full as well as the 20mm's on each wingtip. Billboard is strapped tightly into the seat, keeping the nose forward through the descent. Spotting the target in the distance, she flips a switch. "Master Arm on. Weapons hot." The woman has been a bit distracted the last few days, but there seems to be a calming focus here. Her gaze moves outside the cockpit, looking to the rest of the strike aircraft as they head inbound. She's inspecting formation and looking over other Raptors and Predators for any leaking fluids or visual cues to a problem. "I started carrying a pocket rocket in my survival gear. Its basically a small propane torch." Mels refuses to get that cold again.

For all the hazards that Calumet has to offer to the Colonial Fleet, it sure is a beautiful planet to see spread out below. Glistening like a firey opal with shimmers of aurora dancing over the sky by day or night. Captain Idris Bloodfeather waits for the flight to form up and then at once begins to lead them down towards the planet's surface. 'Vogue' as he's called by the Airwing, double checks his coordinates and glances back to his ECO on this trip, "We may not run into much of any Skath raiders in the air, but sing out when you have DRADIS contacts on the ground. I'm Vogue, by the way." A quick glance over his instruments as the Predator shudders as they are decending through atmosphere before he opens the coms.

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Flight, Vogue. We aren't expecting any Skath Raiders after yesterday, but keep your eyes peeled all the same. Surprises of that kind aren't much fun. Railway is coming up ahead. No low and heavy cloud cover today. Watch for SAM's, over. Prep for our first bombing run, over.""

Jacob hums to himself as he keeps himself busy with staying on the instruments, but when Bloodfeather introduces himself, he chuckles softly, "Gotcha, Captain. I flew with the Ell Tee Cee last time out and Raiders damn near tore us a few new orifices, so you can be damned sure Imma keep an eye on DRADIS. They don't give us ground folks catchy names though, so I'm Just Jacob. Honored ta fly witcha." There's a moment of quiet, then a softer, "Damn this thing flies like an elephant with this much ordinance on it."

Idris huffs a breath softly, "Feels like a pregnant elephant flying sideways."

[Into the Wireless] Melissa says, "Billboard copies, Vogue. Ghosts, arm it up. Start the bombing run on Vogue's mark."

"Just what I like to hear. I made mods too," because after being downed for days on this planet and getting severe hypothermia? Casey has learned things. She's not really looking out at the scenery. That's what pilots get to do. Instead, the ECO's eyes are glued to DRADIS. "Monitoring DRADIS," she affirms. She's a newb, so it's helpful to pre-empt Melissa's teaching moments, or so Casey thinks. When Idris pipes up over comms, Casey grins slightly and tries not to think about the cold just outside the ship. "Go time."

The late afternoon sunlight is still bright, though the shadows are lengthening. A little dust in the air makes a light haze, or that may be humidity, but otherwise visual range is fairly clear. They can see the railway like a scar across the land up ahead as they begin their first approach. Idris drops lower and lower, angled to come in from the west so they are as difficult visually to see from the ground as possible. But not so low that he can't see their target up ahead. He opens the coms, "Flight, Vogue. I'm going in. Pick your targets and let us light them up. Watch yourselves, Over." Off the coms he says to Jacob, "Keep me appraised where the SAM's are likely to come up from, please. I'll try to avoid those areas if I can." Probably can't. Vogue has both of his hands on the flight sticks, fighting the vibration of the flying brick but so far, all's going smoothly as he throttles up for more speed, "Coming up. Here we go."

The strike group continues its descent towards the target and they get ready to pass the initial point, preparing to start the bombing runs. The Forge's in the distance suddenly go active with targeting radar, aiming right down the line of attack at the incoming strike - but the Colonials are far out of range. The targeting radars seem to be having trouble hitting the proper scatter and frequency. Potentially atmospheric conditions. They're coming up on targeting range, too, but there isn't even a brief lock on the Colonials.

Jacob nods to himself at Idris' commentary and lowers his voice, "You got it, Captain. Silent at the moment, but I'm sure as soon as we break cloud cover and they see what we're angling in for, this is gonna light up like a gods damned Saturnalia celebration. Ordinance is ready to go, safeties are off."

"Forges going active, but we're still out of range, but we're coming up on it." Casey calls out their positioning to Melissa and then chuckles a little. "Their targeting systems seem to be having troubles. Might be atmospheric conditions. Not sure if this will change the lower we go BB." She gets on the radio to report to Flight.

[Into the Wireless] Casey says, "Flight, Quinn. Looks like the Forge targeting systems are having troubles. Might be the weird atmospheric conditions here, so might not last if we get lower. Over."

"Good catch," Case. "Lock 'em up. I'm not waiting to see if this is a game they are playing. I'm not feel particularly kind to the loyalists or the Skath today." Billboard noses over, aiming the train of Raptors down towards the railyard with Vogue and the Predators in the lead.

Jacob mutters as the craft angles in, "A'ight Captain. Engine's gotta little help planted on it. I see a few AA placements riding shotgun. Angling for the one further down the chain, leaves the center all for you and your toys, sir." Then a softly muttered, "C'mere you ugly sunofa…"

The warning is acknowledged and appreciated. Bloodfeather doesn't take them any lower than he is going to have to for the bombing run - and he can keep them a little high and drop down at the last when it's necessary. In the hope it may help. He mostly keeps his gloved hands on the control yoke but once in a while he reaches over to adjust an instrument, or to prep the bomb racks. So very, very different than flying a viper. It feels more like a bowling ball. Once cast, straight lining fast with little manuverability. So Bloodfeather focuses on choosing which pins he wants to knock down as his arrows the Predator in closer, aiming for one of the trains parked on the tracks. "Understood. Making a slight course correction, now." That to his ECO first.

As the strike moves closer, the vehicles on the ground seem to start getting locks. There's something odd about it, though. It doesn't seem routine and sudden. It doesn't feel like a trap. Weather forecast didn't call for especially strong electromagnetic storms today, but pulsar activity could change output density at any time. Maybe that's it? Regardless, they start to get target tracking just as the missiles begin to impact around the depot. Below them, Skath can be seen turning their guns towards the sky, but there's only so much a walker can do at the speeds the Colonials are flying.

A little less his usual calm, unruffled, smooth Mr. Cool because he's flying a damn brick with bombs, Bloodfeather keeps his eyes on the target up a head as the Predator rips through the air, flowing over the earth below very fast. The train is coming up rapidly now! Vogue tries not to worry about the surface to air stuff, that's Jacob's job. That first missile detaches and zips away ahead of them even faster than their craft and as the first AA Battery is taken out by his ECO's missile, the Captain lets out a whoop! "Great shot! You are so hired!" Idris keeps his eyes on his HUD and his targetting online for that train. Coming up, coming up fast now… Luke, the force is with you! Bombs away… the first payload is released!

"Keep focus on the Forges, Case. You're solid. Bomb release in ten seconds." Billboard nudges the throttles up just a bit to try and shave a second or so as the ground vehicles begin to get locks. The buzzing in her ear isn't good. SAM lock? "Case, is that a SAM locked onto us?" she calls over her shoulder, voice growing in pitch. At least its not an HMG with a million-to-one shot. That can't happen twice. Right?

Jacob grits his teeth as he tries to keep the targetting system focused from his seat, then offers up, "AP One, firing. Missile away!" While his eyes are following the tracking information, fingers are already changing the firing circuits over to the next missile in the chain and forcing the arming system to recycle and start picking out a target again, "'Preciate it, sir. Cap'n, they're scrambling but doesn't look like they had their coffee this morning. We might have an advantage if we press this fast, but that's still a lot of crap aiming up at us."

"I'm trying, but I blew the last one," Casey says with a frown. "3." One lost. She's been practicing in the sims since she was downed religiously. Maybe it's just nerves? Casey chews on her lower lip a little as she sets up for the second run. When the buzzing occurs, Casey looks down at her instrument panel. "Yeah. Shit. I knew it was too good to be true….firing missile!"

Jacob shakes a little in his seat as the Predator gets rocked around with KEW fire and calls out, "Systems showing moderate damage, nothing we cant handle yet…Missile away!" then a short pause, "Hit on a Forge, but looks like it's still ticking…and good hit, Captain, I think you did em in. Damn nice!" He even allows himself a soft 'woohoo' before refocusing on his instruments.

The SAM doesn't have far to travel and dodging it is close to impossible. The thing launches like a flaming sword and arcs right into the front of the Raptor. Exploding, shrapnel blows apart the canopy glass and sprays the pilot with shards and frag. Some of it even pings back towards Casey. While trying to physically recover from that, anti-aircraft fire rips into the Raptor from the bottom and blows out part of the control panel on the co-pilots side. PArt of the pilot's goes dark and smoke pours from the front. "Frak! I'm hit!" Melissa calls out, clearly in pain. "Case, can you get one more shot off before we jump! I need to wrap these holes!" One hand on the stick, the other begins tearing off duct tape and wrapping the flying arm despite the blood beginning to drip.

[Into the Wireless] Melissa says, "Vogue, Billboard, we are hit! Flowing southbound before we jump! If we don't we're going to lose her."

Indeed, Vogue's Predator is shacken with the TATATATATAT-TAT! of KEW fire punching into the airframe's hull as they rip by but Idris keeps her steady and only drops the speed a little once they are clear out the other side so he can bank around for another pass. Red tell-tales are flashing on his display and before he needs to ask Jacob how bad it may be, his ECO is already on it. "Good." He spares a careful look for the train he'd bombed and nods, "Excellent. going in for our second attack run. Warehouses up ahead by the Depot." Which Captain Wescott was already pounding. The controls are a damn sight more sluggish than he's used to. It takes patience, flying a Predator, but Bloodfeather brings it around and lines it up, throttling up to push it hard and fast for another pass.

"Mi-" Casey can't even get off reporting her miss before the SAM hits. It was pretty much a fire the missile and get hit or don't and still get hit situation. At the impact, Casey is already bracing, so she avoids cracking her head all over her instruments. She's pretty sure she got hit by something flying back from the front, but it all happened so fast, the adrenaline masks any pain whether it's really there or not. "BB! Spooling up for emergency jump back to the barn. I think I'm fine! No 45 seconds to live injuries?" There are pieces of some kind of metal embedded (apparently harmlessly?) in her console to the side of the display.

With the train of Predators and Raptors coming across the target zone, they criss-cross to avoid fragging each other with exploding bombs and targets. Its a sight to see and probably looks like confusion from the ground, looking up. With aircraft coming off target, the whole place is beginning to cook off. Secondaries are causing tertiary explosions. One of the trains must have been carrying fuel because when the fire from the locomotive meets that from the depot nearby, it causes a whirlwind across the freight. It explodes in a blinding light, flattening half of the place while the rest of the site burns ferociously.

Jacob manages to trigger his weapon and gets out as far as, "Missile aw.." and then the Predator gets the living bejezuz hit out of it. Jacob's rocked sideways in his seat from the impact while his panels light up. Like clockwork he starts reciting, "HIT! Captain, I got failures across primary and secondary weapon systems and showing damage to the flight controls. I cant guarantee you she's gonna let go of the bombs when you try to drop the last ones. If they don't, we're landing with live ordinance. Deck's gonna LOVE us….we're still flyin', though…"

Melissa manages to get most of the holes patched at least part way. She turns on the O2 to her suit to max in order to keep air inside it. "Okay, I think I'm good to jump. We're diving for the deck." Melissa is clearly hurting, but she's gritting her teeth. "You alright back there? Jump when ready!" The Raptor takes more fire and the Captain growls through it, even as the Raptor begins to lose anti-grav and powered flight in atmosphere.

"Unloading on those bastards," Casey reports, glancing back to Melissa to see if she's okay and keeping ready on the jump. When the missile misses again, well, "MOTHER FRAKKING PIECE OF-" She punches that hunk of debris lodged in her console, which is probably a bad idea. What happened to laid-back-devil-may-care Casey? She rocks slightly in her seat as she keeps her eyes on the flickering DRADIS display. "We need to get out now BB!" She looks at all the alarms going off. "Before it starts bitching about our jump drive or our fuel explodes." She's not sure what even happened with the last hit to the bird. Casey's pretty sure she slammed her head against something…or something. "321-JUMP!" she speeds through the countdown because frak /that/. One moment the Raptor is there, smoking up into the atmosphere, the next second it is gone.

Predator-6910Y let's off it's second payload and the bombs are away, striving to take out the warhouses used for storage at the trainyard. A billowing red and black flower exploads and rises up to mushroom behind them as Vogue pulls through through and over the Depot area. They are almost past when something hits them, rocking the Predator so hard that it rips the control yoke out of Bloodfeather's gloved hands! The whole craft shudders as if it were about to rip apart in the air, a thunderous boom to jolt him and Jacob almost senseless. But Idris doesn't catch any shrapnel, by pure luck. The airframe absorbs the missile and the pilot lays his hands back on the yoke to wrestle with it to keep her from nose diving! It bucks and kicks, and shivers like a woman in orgasm. Harder than hell to keep her flying as she moans, air ripping through the twisted steel and holes in her hull. "Jacob!" Idris dares a quick look back to see if the back of the Pred is still attacked and whether or not his ECO is dead, or still alive.
