My Dearest Roxie,

If you need help sounding out any of these words, go ask Yavi.

I've missed you, little one. Your mother tells me you've been getting into fights with a young man a two years older then yourself, and at recess no less. While I applaud your efforts to take on a challenge, I must remind you that nothing good ever came of punching a boy in the nose. Though it is occasionally amusing, that is a road I wish you'd wait to walk, at least until you're sixteen, and understand the variety of weapons a young lady has at her disposal. Please, try peace first.

Failing that, use a chair or a book or something. You'll need your hands for the greenhouse, and the care and feeding of those orchids is delicate work. It won't do to break a finger or injure your wrist in retribution for a little schoolyard bullying. Fight smart, sweet, not hard.

Do not tell your mother I said that.

Yavi's helping you read this, right?

Don't forget to check the pots in the white tray in back. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when they sprout.

You're in charge while I'm away. If you have any questions, please write. There's an old tea box full of cash under the indigo if you need it. Don't spend it all in one candy store. (Floss, dear, your teeth will thank you later.)

Write to me often, okay? Let me know how you're doing, how your mother is, and be check in on Yavi from time to time. Spare key's magnetized to the painting of Demeter in my office.

Suri
