AWD #387: General Direction
Summary: Kapali joins Fischer & Randy at the firing range and proves that she's only dangerous about sixty percent of the time, the other forty percent she's just dangerous in the general DIRECTION of that which she's supposed to be aiming at.

Firing Range - Deck 3 - Battlestar Orion
With ten different bays, the firing range can accommodate quite a few shooters with about two dozen spectators or trainees behind them. At 25 yards, the targets can be brought forward or pushed back up to the stops before the inclined plating designed to deflect rounds up. The lighting can be dimmed down to nothing for use with night vision or flashlights, also. A large sign overhead denotes the requirement of both eye and ear protection, as well as the prohibition of all ammunition except rubber or frangible. However, there are no firearms stored here. All firearms and ammunition must be checked out from the Marine Armory in the Security Hub.

Fischer smiles as he hears that, putting on his own ear and eye protection again. Nodding at the signal about the number of shots, he aims, firing off the remaining shots.

Randy steps back to watch Fischer shoot and her mouth slowly drops open, brow crinkling with skepticism. Then she reaches up to call her target back and the first thing she does is count the number of hits. She fishes out her earplug and pins Fischer with a conspiratorial look. "Did you /let/ me win earlier?"

Joining the mixed grab bag of marines who are testing their range skills, Kapali heads for the rang with a pair of her very own ear plugs in one pocket, being loathe to use the ones that are provided by the range. The muffled sound of rounds being fired reaches her unprotected ears before she actually reaches the range threshold and she steps across to wait in line with the others queuing up to check out the weapon and the rounds.

Fischer lets out a slow breath as he finishes his shots, pausing for a few moments as he removes hos earplugs. Shaking his head a bit at Randy's words, "No. I didn't let you win. I don't use pistols that often, though."

"Me neither, except when I'm on an EOD mission. It's easier to multitask with," obviously. Randy nods and looks back to whoever just stepped in. "Oh hey Kapali." Randy's been spending more time at the range lately and less time in her rack. "You can take my spot." She steps back after checking the chamber and unloading the empty mag. Saaaafety.

Handling the pistol that she'd been issued by one of the MP's at the security hub, and visually checking the clip as well before snapping it into place, Kapali ambles forward and shares a nod with Fischer and Randy as she eyes the other marines that are getting in their target practice. "Haven't seen it this busy in here except during fire arm drills," she notes before moving up to the nearest firing lane and sharing a wry smile with Randy. "Wish they'd let us use demo though, I know I'm better at that than this."

"See, I don't have to multitask like that," Fischer replies with a smile, as he makes sure to take out the empty clip. Turning in Kapali's direction, he offers her a brief grin. "It's nice when it's not that busy. Gives you time to concentrate."

"Yeah, well hopefully you beat me. I don't want to make a fool of myself in some competition. Last time I checked that's not how you win ladies over." Randy raises her free hand to cover her mouth as she yawns. She nods to Fischer and says, "Usually there's another team on site when you're roaming with an all EOD unit, because you get called in. But generally you find them all huddled up. Plus, you never know who is hiding…or gods…disarming mines while it's hot?" She whistles.

Exhaling a chuckle, Kapali nods at Fischer, "True, it's easier to concentrate whe it's less crowded. But combat is rarely quiet and uncrowded, so the noise helps with the training." She aims a sidelong glance at Randy then chuckles again, not her usual burst of amusement but a quieter sound that is still amused all the same. "Yeah, find me a guy who thinks my EOD skill set is hot and I'll be impressed." She checks over the weapon again before she selects a target sheet and affixes it to the lead and watches it slide in place at the end of the lane. "Roight," she draws the word out in a slightly amused tone of voice, "all I have to do is empty the clip and see how badly I do."

Fischer nods a little as he listens, offering them both a brief smile. "You'll just have to shoot as good as those three shots that counted, if you end up winning," he offers to Randy, with a grin. "See, all easy, right?"

"I suppose." Randy remarks to Fischer. "That's impossible Pen. If you're better than him then he'll resent you, and if you aren't better than him then you'll have trouble in the field. It's a lose lose, unless you find a guy who does what you do." Ribbing with logic. It's the worst kind. "Now, I'll carefully look away so you can practice saving my ass." Of course, she doesn't look away at all.

Kapali mutters at Fischer, "As good as, or better," she remarks before she shakes her head at Randy then exhales a laugh. "You're right, though. Or I have to date someone who isn't in the CMC, which means dating a navy puke, someone in the crazy air wing or," and she can't help the subtle sneer that forms on her face, "a civilian. No thanks," she says as hooks the ear protectors in place and makes a look of annoyance, "I hate having stuff on or in my ears." This said she signals to the range keeper that she's ready and toggles off the safety before lining up the first handful of shots.

Fischer quiets down as he hears the topic of the conversation, stepping back a little. Looking to the shots fired, before he lets out a bit of a sigh. "I should go take care of a few things…"

"You could date a knuckledragger," Randy offers lazily. Her tones are a touch flat, but for those that don't know her, they wouldn't know that on account of her accent which is melodic enough already. "Aren't you used to it by now?" Then she quiets up as Kapali steps forward to take aim. Etiquette and all. "Woah. Were you aiming for the crotch or…?" She looks over at Fischer with an arch of her brow. "Well, seeya round."

Kapali's first round hits dead on, earning a brief grin from Kapali, before the second one literally pings off of the edge of the target. PINGS. OFFS. She narrows her eyes and aims again, watching the next round impact actually on the target this time followed by, of course, another hit on the EDGE of the paper. That's right. EDGE. The fifth round hits the target again. "Three out of freaking five," said in a tone of disgust. Kapali toggles the safety, flexes her hand, rolls her shoulders subtly, "I could place ordinance that would blow the entire target and the end of the range sky high. Bugger it," and shifts the pistol back to her right hand and sights down range again.

Randy leans back against the wall. "Well your hits were better than mine," Randy points out briefly with some true encouragement. She reaches into her back pocket to pull out one of the cigarettes she's been saving and rolls it between her fingers before lifting it to smell. "You have-" She waits as Kapali lines up her shot again.

Lowering the pistol with a sound of disgust, "Three out of Five. Again. Sure, those other four centurions aren't going to be an issue. Not a problem. Yo, bucket head, don't make me aim in your GENERAL DIRECTION," Kapali growls out this quip before she pops the clip, confirms the empty clip then the empty chamber and back tracks so that she can get a new clip to keep practicing with. Returning, she shakes her head at Randy, "I could date a knuckle dragger, sure, but what if I have more tools in my own kit than they do, and it becomes a tool race?" She grins briefly, "That wasn't even meant as a dirty joke, I swear. I used to have my own gear, and you have any idea how much fun it is to fire off a nail gun?" this question followed by a genuine sigh. "Yeah, real gun, I know. Nail gun, still fun."

"Between the both of us they aren't," Randy assures Kapali. She returns with her fellow EOD tech to get loaded up as well. "Then you both end up with the most awesome kit ever. Nothing will ever faze you?" She chuckles as Kapali points out the double entendre. "Nope. No I don't, but I wouldn't mind finding out one day." She takes up the bay where Fischer was shooting, next to where Kapali was. Then she gets on her tiptoes to attach the target and slams her fist on the button to send it back.

"Hah, good point," Kapali agrees as she sends a new page down range with a smack of the button as well and rubs at her ears with her free hand. "Next time we're in a population center that hasn't been completely overrun, I'll find a tool store and load up on nail guns, ropes of nails and all the stuff we need. We'll go to Pireaus sometime and riddle some tree stumps!"

"I'll help you. If I'm with you." Randy slides the cigarette up behind her ear, plugs up her other ear, and loads her pistol. She pulls the slide back to make sure the first bullet loads into the chamber properly and then lifts her pistol. It takes her longer to start firing this time. Her eyes unfocus and she blinks as if to clear them, reset them, something. Then she takes a deep breath and starts firing. 1, 2, 3…1, 2.

"Hey, why would I get up to shenanigans without you on deck to assist with said shenanigans and aid and abet said shenanigans?" Kapali wonders before Randy lines up and begins firing down range. Kapali waits out her shots before she rolls her right shoulder briefly and tries again, "Practice HAS to eventually make me better, just by the law of averages." She slides the ear protectors in place and fires again.

Randy shoots Kapali a soft grin after they shoot their first shots. "Better not." She's a bit loud since she isn't going with the standard muffs. She glances over at Kapali's target and stifles her instinct to encourage the woman as she sees her prepping again. This time, when Randy lifts her arms to shoot, she shoots all five in a quick successive burst. "Frak.." She quickly puts the safety on and presses the button, her hand a touch shaky.

Kapali keeps a weather eye on randy as she watches her take her shots, lining up to empty her clip as well before she checks the empty clip, then the barrel then calls the target sheet back with a press of the button. "You're having nightmares too?" she asks in a quiet voice, unhooking her ear protection before speaks.

Randy jams her hand into her pocket while she waits for the target to arrive. Silence to the question as she breathes slowly, but shallowly. She moves her lips as she counts the hits and then jumps up to snatch the target down, leaving a little bit of it behind. "Hey can you get that for me? I gotta run." Again, loud. Apparently she didn't hear Kapali? Right? Must be the earplugs. "I'm late." For what, she doesn't say, but Randy's always been kind of cryptic without meaning to. She smiles weakly to Kapali before briskly walking out.

Snagging her range results, both sets, and initialing them appropriately, she snags Randy's as well and writes Randy's name in BIG BOLD LETTERS on her range results before she takes a moment to fold her results into a pair of giant, messy, airplanes with the edges showing her signature clearly displayed. It's only then that she carries the results back to the MP dispensing ammo and weaponry. She turns in both pages, airplanes that is, and makes it clear that she's turning in Randy's results as well before she turns in her empty clip and pistol.
