The Martis family comes from the slums of Tawa, on Sagittaron. The strict traditional beliefs of her father contributed to the death of her beloved younger brother by denying him life-saving medical treatment. Ella joined the Navy in part as a big 'frak you' to her controlling father, and in part hoping to someday go on to college and become a doctor (an aspiration she rarely, if ever, speaks of).
