| It's a beautiful morning on Picon, the peace and tranquility broken only by the sound of a Raptor's engine as it sets down in the dirt. Out of it are booted a small group of Orion's marines and in exchange, into it get a smiliar sized group of Spree's. The landing site? A small coms-relay station in the arse end of no where, the job, sit around and try not to die of boredom while guarding it then head home as fast as possible when the raptor comes back. Simple. |

A switch off. No problem. Kaya gets off the Raptor and looks around at the site. Her steps are casual, nothing hurried or harried, boots making little puffs in the dirt as she walks. Her gun is slung on a shoulder, thumb hooked into the sling, whistling a quiet little tune of a popular number from way back when. She seems pretty comfortable with her surroundings, even reaching into a pocket with her free hand to pull out a pack of gum.
Looking around for a few moments as they leave the Raptor, Fischer shakes his head briefly. "Ah, not my favorite vacation spot, but it'll do." He looks around, then to the other marines, unable to hold back a brief chuckle now. "Nice whistling," he offers to Kaya, then looks back to their surroundings. "No paint here. Good."
The comm station is a very simply intallation. There's a small antea in the middle surrounded on three sides by covered dugouts for covering fire and the 4th a lowbuilt storiage shed for sare parts, shovels, loo roll and anything else a marine stationed here might need in case of minor incident.
Standing nearby the antenna, Kaya tips her head back and looks up it, a brow arching. Sure looked like something worth protecting. She turns back to Fischer and stops whistling. "Thanks." Popping a piece of gum into her mouth, she offers the pack to him. "Paint," she chuckles briefly. "You looked hilarious." Noticing the dugouts, she nods her head towards one. "Looks like that's our seat for now."
Taking the offered pack, Fischer gets out one of those pieces of gum, before handing the pack back. "Thanks." A brief pause as he hears the part about him looking hilarious, and he shrugs. "Anything to make people feel entertained, right?" Nodding at the dugouts, and starting to move in that direction as he pops that piece of gum into his mouth. "I've seen far worse places," he offers now.
Kaya quirks her lips into a half smile. "Sounds like you're a regular jester then. If you were a pilot I'd callsign ya." She takes the gum back, pockets it, then falls in step beside him, moving in the direction of the same dugout he was heading for. She pauses though to take a look around, they were supposed to be protecting it after all.
The terrain behind the shed is flat and clear, probably the reason it was built on that side. The next side clockwise is similar but phases into scrubland and some small copses, as the view continues round before finally giving way to clear dirt just before the shed once more.
"Thanks for not doing that," Fischer replies, the hint of a smile there for a few moments, before he looks around as well, turning to study the area for a few moments, before entering the dugout now. "Let's hope the hours we're here pass relatively fast, right?"
The flat terrain is noticed and Kaya is grateful for it, "Should be fairly simply to keep a look out," she observes. She returns his hint of a smile and lifts her shoulders. "I may still call you Jester, don't be thanking me yet." She hesitates just outside the dugout, taking the time to flip off her safety she always keeps on her weapon when traveling. "Why? I like my boots on the dirt. No rush to go back yet. Cush job."
Shrugging a bit, Fischer remarks. "It's Picon." A brief sigh, before he adds, "Too many memories." Looking out into the distance for now.
Since Kaya hadn't gone into the dugout, she'd caught something…just a hint of a sound. Lifting a hand to her lips, she places a finger there in the age old shhh sign then tugs on her ear. Listen. Donning her helmet if she hadn't been wearing it, she lifts her rifle and peers past the flatlands towards the trees a ways away. Speaking into her com now, she relays. "Centurions.. I'm pretty sure of it."
"I thought I saw something over there somewhere," Fischer confirms, before he adds, "Get into the dugout! It gives some cover, at least." Looking out there as he readies his rifle as well now.
Following the order, Kaya gets into the dugout, lifting her rifle and aiming it towards the area she had heard the unmistakable sound of metal. Cylon. She aims it, finger on the trigger. "They were lying in wait for us, looks like. Lucky the Raptor got out." Or they had heard the Raptor.. and it alerted them.
The noise seems to be coming from one of the patches of trees and yes, as the marines take their cover and wait, those tell-tail red lights start to appears between the trunks. A small group it looks like, two, maybe three.
Fischer sighs as he listens, aiming his own rifle at the point where the red lights start to appear. "If they had been lying in wait, why wait until we had changed guards for this place?" Taking more careful aim now, waiting for the Cylons to get into the proper range.

Getting a sight on one of the canners, Kaya pulls the trigger but not before the centurion gets a shot off at her. Thud, thud, thud. Two in the chest and one on her hand, she falls back into the dugout on her back. She groans, rifle still in hand, looking towards the canners again intending to shoot again. She's not going down without a fight!
The centurions continue to advance, shooting all the way. Not that they're predictable or anything.
Firing off his burst, Fischer grimaces as he takes a few hits to his chest, one of them getting through the armor. Looking to Kaya for a few moments, he looks a bit concerned. "You okay there?" Not waiting for her answer, he takes out a grenade, and gets into position to lob it at one of the incoming toasters.

Thud. Another shot, this one to her leg.. it's more a graze, so Kaya doesn't fall down this time at least. She switches off hurriedly, allowing her rifle to hang on the sling while she draws out a grenade and lobs it towards one of them advancing towards them.
Growling as he sees the Grenade miss a bit, Fischer dives down a bit more as an incoming bullet gets a bit too close to his neck. "Too close," he growls, getting to his feet again and lobbing off another grenade.
The 'naded centurion doesn't seem to bothered, infact it barely even seems to register the explosions. Damn toaster bastards.

The march forward is relentless it seems, although this time one of the marine's grenades does find it's mark and a centurion goes down in a hail of shrapnel. The other two though? They just keep coming.
Kaya doesn't hesitate in throwing her grenade, it was something she had excelled at in training. She pulls out her second one and pulls the pin before lobbing it at the one trying to kill Fischer.
Fischer gets out his rifle again now, aiming quickly and firing off another burst at the enemy.

As the centurion shoots at her, it hits her and Kaya is knocked back down. She doesn't get up as quickly this time, but she does get up. She lifts her rifle but both hands are bloodied and make it slippery. Lifting it, she aims.. one more time.
Fischer winces as he sees Kaya go down again, before he focuses back on firing at the Centurions now. "Why won't you just die…" he mutters, sighing a bit now.

Kaya is hurt, but the wounds.. none of them are too serious.. so she plods on, shot after shot, burst fire after burst. She's not giving up, wanting to protect the antenna.
The centurions are fully out of the trees now and into the open scrub ground between them and the dugouts. Both look a little dinged, but neither like it's about to fall.
Fischer gets a shot to his abdoment, wincing a bit as it momentarily knocks some air out of him. Getting up again, he keeps on firing. "Come… on… almost… got them…"

Kaya keeps getting pelted by bullets and stumbles back against the side of the dugout. She's bloodied and angry and moves from the dugout, gun blazing as she forward marches towards the canner.
Getting hold of the radio, Fischer is about to say something when he sees Kaya leaving the dugout. "Frak! Kent!" A brief moment of breath, before he adds, "What the frak are you doing?" Abandoning the radio for now, he gets out of the dugout as well, firing a burst before trying to reach the other Marine.

Hearing her name, Kaya doesn't stop. If she can just take it out.. dammit! She pulls the trigger again, "Call reinforcements!" Of course she's not the leader, but there it is.
Keeping on firing, Fischer grimaces. "Get the frak back in the dugout! We can't call in air support with us out here!" A brief pause, as he stumbles back from a bullet to his chest now. "…order!"

Once more Kaya falls and while she's down she reaches for a grenade on her belt and pulls the pin, holding it with the finger while she launches the grenade with the other hand towards the centurion.
Firing off another burst at the same time as he sees Kaya go down, Fischer then reaches for her, trying to pull her back towards the dugout after she's launghed the grenade now. Muttering something under his breath.
One of Kaya's bullets explodes into the eye light of a centurion and hits something vital inside. Boom. One left.

It might be the grenade, it might be the bullet, eitherway that last centurion finally falls less than ten foot away from the pair of marines.
Hopefully it wasn't the grenade.. Kaya didn't need some friendly fire added to the other wounds. She sits up, still holding the pin around her finger. "Frak.." she mutters. "I think.. I'm hurt."
Letting out a breath of relief as the Centurion goes down, Fischer reaches out to place his arm around Kaya and force her back towards the dugout. "You think?" The words come out very neutral, before he adds, "Back to the dugout. Now!"
Kaya climbs to her feet and does what he orders her to do, that pin still in her hand. She takes a seat once more and looks up at Fischer. "I'll Live."
"We both will," Fischer replies, a bit quietly, as they get back into the dugout. "That was quite… stupid… brave… I don't know…" Said a bit loudly and rather angrily, before he grimaces momentarily. "It… reminded me of someone." Expression distant for a few moments now.
Kaya wipes a sleeve over her face, looking weary. "Yes, Sir." She was intending on leaving it at that, but doesn't. "I've.. never been shot before. You sort of.. go numb.. that's how I feel right now. Numb." She waits a beat. "Who do I remind you of?"
There's a brief growl from Fischer as he hears the 'Sir'. "Don't you go sir-ing me…" he begins, before he trails off at the talk about numbness. "It's that way. And it seldom gets easier, but you learn to cope." At the second part, he sighs. "The mother of my daughter. She was too brave for her own good…" Shaking his head as he turns to look out there again, after calling for the Raptor home.
