MD #256: Copper Basin - Airwing
Copper Basin - Airwing
Summary: The Orion jumps to Picon and the Airwing beats the hell out of the Skath - but there aren't many Skath in orbit. The mission is a success yet it leaves everyone wondering, where is the enemy?

The last time the Orion hit the Colonies for a major strike was over Caprica, the day the Cylons capitulated. The same battle where so many in an already whittled-down wing were killed. And here the Orion returns once more, to the same system, to hit Picon. Perhaps the Skath would have known the Colonial propensity for attacking enemy shit on Picon if the Skath had bothered to ask the Cylons. Sadly for the Skath, they clearly did not take the time to ask the Cylons much of anything — otherwise the Skath might consider the Orion to be more of a threat than a temporary fly buzzing them. Arrogance kills.

The Orion and the rest of the fighting battlegroup jump into a high orbit over Picon. The Raptors are already loaded down with anti-ship missiles and are parked onthe flight decks. The moment the Orion finishes the jump, the air boss calls across the comms for a full scramble. The other ships in the group are still arriving and even as they do, their guns begin to seek out targets.

And targets they have. However, strangely, there's a distinct lack of an enemy carrier in orbit. There is however a good portion of a fighting force. Several frigates and cruisers are in orbit, even a pair of heavies. The whole of the Orion Group begins full battery fire at the same moment, everyone firing at one of the heavies. The huge rounds look like orange golfballs traveling through the stars. It will be another minute or so before they even impact but the sheer number of them is scary to consider being on the receiving end of.

Gloria flying with Lt 'Bonfire' Wardman is a new experience for Gloria, but thems the kicks. As per usual she's not eaten much before the mission and is in the bays early to get the checks done, twice. You can't be too sure. Despite all the years she's thinking of such jumps from CIC but not this time. Once the last jump is done Bonfire lifts off the deck and hurls them out into what was, just a moment ago, empty space, but is now very much alive with ships and munitions.

As soon as they jump in and he has the green to go, Idris punches his acceleration and simutaneously feels the Orion spit his viper out through the launch tube. The stars open up with the glorious view of Picon spread out beneath them. The big ships' guns start pounding away and it's a hell of a sight to see! It distracts Captain Idris Bloodfeather, aka 'Vogue' from thinking about his last mission. Thinking about it can make him break out in a cold sweat and he doesn't need that dogging him. He immediately adjusts his course, seeking the Raptors he and his vipers are to line up on for armed escort as the rest of his Squadron launches.

Melissa is still an experienced combat so her stacking in the whole of the Raptor strike force is up closer to the front. She doesn't have to lead with rank, but she can with ability. "Let's have some fun, el-tee," Melissa tells him over the comms as she pushes the throttles up and rockets out of the covered flight deck. They only met a few days before but she doesn't seem concerned. You don't always get to pick your ECO. When they come over the nose of the Orion, she looks off towards where the outbound rounds are heading and lofts a single arching brow. "Looks like you've got plenty to shoot at out there, el-tee." She leans forward a bit in her ejection seat and gives a big middle finger towards the Skath fleet. "Hey! Skath! We're here to serve your eviction notice!! GET OFF MY LAWN!!!"

It's all hands on deck for this mission, so the CAG himself has a good excuse for suiting up to fly. Niko launches in his Viper with the first wave, though his attention is on the console, and data being fed to him by Orion about the enemy force. He slides in behind one of the strike groups and starts assigning targets on the fly. The first is ordered to target the Heavy Cruiser that is not taking fire from the big guns, and that's where the CAG goes as well.

[Into the Wireless] Niko says, "Strike One, Scythe. Vogue, take your group in on the second Heavy Cruiser. I'm with you."

Fox isn't nervous riding back seat with Violet Wescott, not caring if he out ranks the pilot. He settles into the seat and fires up the scanners, "Ready to rock." He says in a strait tone. Fingers running over the board to bring up specs. He really wants a cigarette, or a joint would be better, but work comes first. The nic patch will have to do.

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Scythe, Vogue copies. Diaz, on my wing. Let's go, weapons hot. Over!"

"Why the frak do I always get stuck with the newbs," Casey grouses to herself in the back seat as her pilot hops up into the open hatch to say, "I believe the reason is on your collar." Casey pales slightly and smiles up at the pilot. "No offense," she returns before they go through the preflight checklist. They get up and away soon enough to find the lovely presents waiting for them. "Frak me," Casey says as she stares at DRADIS, echoed by her pilot as well.

Launching with the rest of the vipers from the Orion, Diaz is actively scanning the HUD and keeping her eyes on the placement of the rest of the wing as she drops into position along Vogue's wing. The sight of the rest of the wing scrambling into position to engage at various targets becomes part of the background noise as she takes aim at their target, eyes narrowed and a hint of a smile forming on her face as she's selecting weapons and target. She gives a subtle side to side wing tip as she speaks into the com.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Scythe, Diaz copies. Vogue, on your left, weapons hot. Over."

[Into the Wireless] Melissa says, "Violet, we're in. We're hot and heavy, over."

[Into the Wireless] Gloria says, "Violet, Dodona. We're on your wing, weapons hot, wanna go play with that cruiser? My trigger is whispering sweet nothings into my ear just seeing it sitting there"

[Into the Wireless] Casey says, "Violet, Hiker. We're with you too, ready to roll."

[Into the Wireless] Fox says, "Flight, Fox. DRADIS is lit, let's take it down."

Bennett arrives from the Tinyplot Room Nexus.

With the outbound rounds heading for the Skath fleet, the Wing isn't too far behind. Enemy Raiders can be seen rising up from the suface in a larger force, notably from a base that the Orion has already cleaned out once: Crandall. The Raiders are coming up, but the numbers don't feel right. There's a nagging feeling with everyone that this.. is strange. It shouldn't be this lightly defended. Should it?

The rounds hit the second heavy cruiser and while its only about 20% of them, that's a helluva lot of armor piercing and explosive love sent through the hull. The nose explodes off of it, shearing neatly, and then the whole rest of it explodes in a bright light. Pieces of it spin off, most of it heading for deorbit. One of the engines drifts and knocks against the top of a frigate, leaving a long venting shear across the top.

One minute to weapons range.

"Too quiet," Gloria mutters to Bonfire, "call me crazy, but I don't like it." Not that it's so quiet she doesn't have work to do, and after those cheering words she shuts up and calculates firing solutions as fast as she can, letting the pilot focus on not flying them into anything.

[Into the Wireless] Niko relays the news from Orion, "Wing, Scythe. Orion Actual reports Raiders coming up from Picon to join the party."

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Scythe, Vogue Copies."

The news is relatively good, and Niko isn't going to jinx it by saying anything. After a final check on where all the strike packages are headed and how the incoming Raiders are forming up, Scythe hits the throttle and closes up with the leading ships of Strike One, and that big Cruiser dead ahead. Time to blaze a trail.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Scythe, Diaz copies. Weapons hot, target acquired. Over."

Fox keeps his sights on the target. "Just a bit closer." He says, holding the last word in question. Not close enough for missles away, finger hovering over the fire controls. "Just a bit closer…" He marks the distance, keep on target.

Diaz may not want to jinx it either but there's a distinctive tone in her voice that's all worry and cautious cynicism. She keeps looking at the HUD display then DRADIS then tips her head back and looks up and around then back again. She keys in second channel to communicate sidelong with Vogue: "The numbers don't line up, Vogue. This small of a Skath picket could be indicative of a larger fleet waiting to jump in."

Melissa watches the first cruier explode, shielding her eyes with a squint. "Ha HA HA!" she laughs to herself. "That's RIGHT. You picked a fight with the wrong gang!" Can Fox hear her? Probably. Does she care? Negative. Violet is letting the Wescott Rage flow. The burners light up and she flips over to a different flight program. "Fox, lock 'em up on dradis. Spin up two nukes."

[Into the Wireless] Melissa says, "Violet copies all!"

"Incoming Nyx." Casey rattles off the bearing of the Raiders for Bennett according to their position. "By the way. I think Violet has finally cracked," she says with complete calm and casualness. "Nukes are almost ready."

Bennett's raptor swoops in on the leading edge of the pack, thrusters lit briefly as she course corrects them on a path for the heavy cruiser. "Copy that, Hiker." She too is calm and businesslike, a hint of a smile evident in her voice as always. "They may try to jam our weapons systems, be prepared." She doesn't strictly need to say it, but it doesn't hurt to overcommunicate.

Fox's hands flash over the controls, spinning up two nukes. He works to get them in the launch mode, checking screens as he loads them. "Locked and loaded." He sits back thinking he's in good hands.

To Diaz, Vogue answers, "Keep your eyes peeled, though they could be elsewhere. Focus on what we are doing here and now, over." If more Skath are going to jump in mid fight, there's not a lot Idris can do to stop them. He pushes the throttle up the last little bit to engage the Raiders and keep them off of the Raptors. He keeps an eye on the positions of his fellow pilots as well as the enemy on his HUD, readying his missiles and seeking for a target

"Copy that Nyx." This isn't Casey's first time in a bird with Bennett. "So glad they didn't stick me with a nugg-" and she realizes her local comms are still on. "Oops-" CLICK! She chuckles nervously to herself as she clacks on the keyboard.

Inez arrives from the Tinyplot Room Nexus.

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Diaz, Vogue. I see two Raiders going after Raptor-4540H. Let us keep them off of Nyx. I am going for the one to starboard, over."

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Vogue, Diaz, Copy that. I'll take the one portside, over."

[Into the Wireless] Bennett says, "Vogue, Nyx. I will try to lead them into your guns, if I can."

Diaz is speaking into the com even as she's maneuvering away from Vogue's wing with a sharp roll that helps refine the targeting solution. "Come and get me," she mutters in a low voice to herself as she's scanning all the screens then up and around through the four walls of the canopy and back down to the targeting screen once again.

Fox narrows his eye's, "I've got a clear shot." He makes a final check to make sure he has the right target. His screen is light up with targets both large and small. He's sure about this.

"I have a firing solution," Gloria notes to Bounder, "missiles online and ready to go. Going to need you to handle comms so I can focus if that's okay? The raiders just make the DRADIS messy, messy isn't good. Muttering a prayer to Zeus under her breath she holds her trigger finger until the opportune moment.

Niko flies in the trail of the lead pair of Vipers, playing cleanup for Vogue and Diaz. He watches to see which Raiders they are locking up and toggles his own missile targeting to active and settles it onto a Skath going for Violet's Raptor. The tone warbles and then goes steady. Good lock. "Fox One!" The missile streaks off, arcing through space to attempt intercept with the oncoming Raider.

Idris peels his viper away from Diaz as the pair of them separate to go after two different Skath Raiders coming in on Bennett's Raptor. Bloodfeather keeps tabs on both Inez and Melissa's flights but for the moment he has already dedicated himself to the Raptor that has drawn the heaviest hostile attention. Vogue's dark eyes watch carefully how Nyx is on course for her own attack, but also angling to try and draw the Raiders into more ideal shots for himself and Diaz. So far, so good and not yet anything as harry as his last mission.

"Copy, Dodona," Inez replies. She's watching the flight of the birds around her, and keeps as steady a line as she can for Gloria to get a lock. She listens to the reports, then opens comms when there's a moment.

Fox spots his change and hits the button. To many movies in his life to not say, "Fox One, fire." He watches as the rest of the Raptors fire and the explosions that go off. He's got the next target in mind, looking out the window to see the target fall to pieces. His eye's widen, "Far out." Is said as he sets for the next. "Target aquired."

The two raiders crisscrossing their shots in an attempt to catch Bennett in the crossfire pretty much come up emptyhanded. Tracers slant off into the black, and her bus turns and burns with plenty of room to spare - landing one of her pursuers squarely in Diaz's crosshairs. The other is more tenacious, but breaks off as well after a few hits from Idris. "Well, that was entertaining," she murmurs into her helmet. "Good hit on the cruiser, Hiker. I will line you up for another."

The first missile streaks off Niko's wing and meets the target Raider dead on. Boom, scratch one Skath. This kill is overshadowed by the nuclear detonations — silent but brilliant in the vacuum of space — that spell the doom of some larger Skath vessels. No time to watch explosions, as he has to jink when the remaining Raiders close and merge. Suddenly his threat warning is going off with multiple Raiders locking him up for missile shots. Pushing the stick over and hammering the throttle, Niko takes his Viper into a high-G course change to try and throw them off.

[Into the Wireless] Niko says, "More Raiders incoming."

"Bam!" Inez crows as Gloria and Fox's hits take out the Heavy Raider. "Next!" She brings the Raptor around for Gloria's next target as her viewport is lit up with the explosion.

There is something deeply satisfying about seeing something explode in a nuclear glow, weither from CIC or the back of a raptor. "Praise be unto Zeus," she mutters with a grin, even as she hunts for the next target. "Bouncer, pick a light cruiser and point us at it, I've got solutions on all three." It's always nice to give the pilots something to do.

At the last possible second Diaz flips weapons to KEW instead of missiles and closes in on the Raider for a sucker punch of a single shot that sends the Raider spinning off in the darkness to burn up in the atmosphere like so much space garbage. Once the Raider is down for the count she flips the Viper a neat 180, coming around again to take aim at another of the Skath raiders, flipping weapons again as the sound of dueling weapons locks commences. She sweeps a look at the display, guiding the Viper in a series of sharp turns and twists, making the Raider work for the weapon lock as hard as she's working for hers.

Melissa dodges the Raptor hard through the incoming Raider fire, throwing it into a right-hand break and throwing a couple buckets of chaff off the rear, hoping it throws off the guidance in the stupid Raider. Once maneuvered, she follows the smoke trail through space to see where it terminates at the missile. When the Heavy explodes, she punches the air in front of her. "Hell YEAH! Fear this, motherfrakkers! Erfriki got nukes now!!"

The fighting isn't too intense yet and not a ton of Raiders so… Idris keeps using his KEW and saves his missiles for nasties that may yet show up. He keeps a sharp eye on how the others are doing and having scored only a light hit on his raider, leaves off of it as Diaz closes. Bloodfeather rolls his viper around to find one coming for him! Cool and calmly he brings up the nose to line up his shot and starts firing the KEW. They look like they are playing chicken, viper pilot and Skath!

Fox's eye's go from the explosion to his pilot in silent exuberance and a touch of fear. He sets himself again for another volley.

Niko's evasive maneuver avoids the worst of the incoming missile, though he's still tossed around by the explosion and has to re-orient. Tracer fire from a second Skath skates past his nose, so the CAG reverse his turn and hits the thrusters again. He can tell there are a /lot/ of nukes going off out there, but he's a little too busy for a kill count. The joys of leading from the front.

Nuclear flashes spread across the starscape. Even the ones that don't hit begin proximity fusing and blowing up. Thermal damage is all they can hope for and sometimes that's enough. Its like little stars winking into existence very briefly all around the Skath ships. They've barely had time to begin returning fire before the trio of cruisers take a rapid-fire set of hits that begin blowing them apart. The hulls detonate from the inside, nuclear fission blasting huge spherical holes in their interiors and starting chain-reaction fires and explosions. The cruisers buck and burst at the seams. Meanwhile the rest of the fleet has turned their guns on the few frigates left. One of them is already turning to flee. The other ones begin taking heavy punishment and fires can already be seen starting as the ships vent.

Donovan arrives from the Tinyplot Room Nexus.

"I've got no more targets," Gloria calls forward to Inez, switching to countermeaures to try and stop some of those raiders." Switching system she scans the screens for where her effort is most likely to be of use then sings out, "Got one on our tail, jamming. Could you let the Strikes know?" Jamming raiders is good, having them shot out of the skies is better.

Things are going fine and Vogue is firing away, turning hard to keep that Skath Raider in his sites as the pair of them furball into a roll, each trying to nail the tail of the other. The Captain gets the first shots to hit, chewing up the enemy raider but the Skath twists away and manages to cut back after Bloodfeather's viper. The sounds of KEW rounds ripping through steel is loud in his cockpit, both hands on the stick as Idris tries to jink and break away. He does, but not before alarms are wailing their warnings that his fighting craft has been mauled! "Son of a bitch!" Lot of nukes going off around them, bright flashes against the stars that keep distracting him to glance quickly at his DRADIS. Enemy ships jumping in, or enemy ships being obliterated? As long as the Orion is safe! Bloodfeather bares his teeth and slaps his alarms to mute them. Vogue jinks his viper and drops into a roll to try and come back around, seeking a missile lock. Soon as he has it, he fires away! Damn, he's got a missile incoming as well. Fully focused on trying not to get hit again.

Inez's shoulders jerk in a pump of satisfaction without moving her hands on the yoke as the lighter target she had lined up for Gloria sends showers of sparks and rays of light in all directions. She glances towards the planet. "That's right, we haven't forgotten all you down there," she murmurs fiercely to them. "Copy. Dumping chaff, too." Suiting actions to words, Inez sends out the shower of chaff in their wake as she opens comms with the Strikes.

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Strikes, Bouncer, we're jamming and have one on our tail over."

Fox has nothing big to aim at, but the small ones are still out there. He swiches his systems and begins to jam. Out of curiousity, he begins to scan the planet surface as well. The data might come in handy for the next step in this opperation. All systems on full now that he's reduced to the smaller targets. "It's all you Violet. Happy hunting." He does cross a finger, this battle isn't over yet.

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Strikes, Vogue. I'm hit, kind of bad. Dodging a missile, over!"

With only minor damage to the Viper to account for, Diaz fires off a missile and watches as it destroys the Raider she'd aimed at. Bits of debris plunk off of the sides of the Viper as she blows through the debris field in search of more targets to take aim at. The flashes that mark the nuclear explosions flicker across the starscape accompanied by the smaller but no less dazzling explosions that pinpoint the exchange of weapons fire between the Vipers and the Skath, the Raptors and the cruisers. She keys the com as she maneuvers to engage, pouring on more speed as she does so.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Vogue, Diaz. Break off. I'll cover Bouncer & Dodona. Say again, break off. Over."

Coming around after evading the pair of incoming Skath, Niko gets behind them as they bore in to attack the Raptors. It takes him a second to lock up the offending Raider, but then the DRADIS tone goes solid and Scythe hits the thumb trigger. "Fox one." The AAM streaks off the blows the tail off the Skath, sending it spinning off into space. And just like that, his screen is clear of nearby threats. The CAG blinks and double checks that on visual.

[Into the Wireless] Niko says, "Flight, Scythe. Sound off — any threats out there? My board is clear."

The last of the destroyers jumps away, probably looking to go call for help. Unfortunately its likely going to be some time before they can get back. Pulling other ships from other colonies is going ot leave even more vulnerable. The last destroyer does not wink away in FTL, but instead they can see it jump through a wormhole and head for the core. Around the wing, the Raiders begin falling in more dramatic numbers. Seeing that the rest of their fleet has been destroyed, they turn and head back for the planet. The urge to chase is high, but the numbero f air defense sites down there will make anyone pause and think looong and hard about chasing them into Saber range.

While academically Gloria knows her jamming worked, the violence with which the raptor shakes when it's hit has her checking they're still in one piece. There's damage to the systems that makes hiself readily apparent when one of the panels under her boiard blows out and throws shrapnel at her shins, but she can still both feel and move her toes, so she gifures she'll live. "I'm hit, but not bad" she calls to Inez, looking for more targets to jam."

[Into the Wireless] Melissa says, "Scythe, Violet, lookin VERY pretty, over!"

Even with the chaff and the jamming, they're still hit, and Inez turns her head reflexively, hunching down as they're hit, but she keeps her hands steady on the controls. As the shaking subsides, she looks at the starfish cracks all over her windscreen in front of her and takes a deep breath. "Are we really clear?" she calls back to Gloria after she hears Niko call for a sound off. She turns her head for a moment to check the ECO for signs of blood or anything that might hint that she's lying and playing it tough

Idris is a little too busy to reply to Diaz's warning to break off and evade! Once he's fired his own missile, Vogue is already on that whole try to shake the missile coming at him thing. Meanwhile, his own missile sinks a fine hit on the Skath Raider he'd been gunning for! Huzzah! No time to celebrate it as the Captain is pushing his damaged viper to it's limits to get away from some hurt. He almost does it too! The missile goes off a fair distance, not close, but the shockwave is still enough to rip the cockpit stick right out of Vogue's gloved hands and push his viper over into a brief uncontrolled tumble. "Damn!" Idris quickly regains flight control and checks his DRADIS, not seeing any further enemies. He let's out a breath and starts doing systems checks before he answers Niko.

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Flight, Vogue. Negative bogies on scope. Surely that was too easy, over."

Sending the missile right into the teeth of the Skath Raider, Diaz dismisses it as a threat as soon as the missile is away, scanning the debris field for more threats even as she's easing the throttle back and guiding the Viper around in a sleek arc. She skims past Inez and Gloria before she takes up station again along Idris's wing and does a slow loop around his viper as well, eyeing the damage his viper is sporting.

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Scythe, Bouncer, clear as day. We're hit, we can make it. Dodona's got a scrape, over."

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Diaz, Vogue. Thanks for the help - and everyone else."

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. Minor damage to the nose, nothing that I haven't landed safely before. Vogue, your tail is bent out of shape, Over."

Fox does his best to keep the raiders from locking on, still scanning the surface of the planet. The blasts out the window draw his attention for a moment, "Nice shooting." He says with gusto. Turning back to the scans, he says, "We're clear up here. Scanning the surface for further targets." He looks to Mel, "Would you be interested in getting a piano?" He taps his screen to his old house on the surface. He looks at it, "I know where to get one." He grins, glad to see that part of town still in tact. Recorders on, data recieved. He sits back and pretends to smoke a cigarette, wishing it was real.

[Into the Wireless] Gloria says, "Diaz, Dodona. I hear thats what all the ladies tell him"

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Dodona, Diaz," the sound of laughter follows her reply, "that's why he's spending time with a medic, trying to get bent back into shape. Over."

[Into the Wireless] Idris says, "Dodona and Diaz, Vogue. Leave my private life out of it, if you please. Over."

[Into the Wireless] Niko says, "Flight, Scythe. Save the banter for the bar, people." He sounds amused despite the reminder. "Good work. Back to the barn. They'll be back."

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz, yes sir. Sorry sir. Over."

Diaz and Dodona can't see his face but Idris gives them a scowl. Referencing /Miri/ over the Airwing coms does not amuse him, no. Thankfully Scythe speaks up to squash any further chatter along that line. Isn't a certain Ensign going to get a piece of ass chewing again tonight. Diaz must like annoyig her Squadron Leader. Vogue makes himself focus down on getting his damaged viper turned in an arc to line him back up for a return to the Orion. The craft is sluggish but thankfully there is no atmosphere to fight the controls and make it more difficult. He keeps a sharp eye out for any sign of the enemy - alas one ship jumped away, perhaps to bring more back to the Colonies. Meanwhile, back to barn with him along with the rest.

With that said, and keying her end of the com silent so that no one can hear her laughing, Diaz maintains position off of Vogue's wing while setting course back for the Orion. She hangs back, keeping a weather eye on Vogue to ensure that he safely navigates the landing and only then does she bring her viper in as well. Some things are just worth getting yelled at over. But that's sort of a theme anyway.
