Battlestar Orion (BS-114)

There can be little doubt that the Mercury-class Battlestar represents the pinnacle of the Colonial Navy's technological prowess. Twenty percent larger than the Galactica class, it is tougher, better armed, and boasts a larger carrier capacity than the flagship of the previous era. With multiple redundant backups, heavily automated systems, integrated computer controls, and even on-board vehicle fabrication facilities, it is designed to fight harder, smarter, and longer than any ship that has come before it. In short, it is both a technological marvel and the ultimate symbol of Colonial military might.

All of these things too can be said for BS-114, the Mercury-class Battlestar known as Orion. While she is not the latest ship out of the Scorpian Yards, she is one of the largest in her class. The second largest battlestar ever produced, in fact, by mass tonnage and length. Commissioned seven years ago, the Orion has seen enough action and deployments for her systems and Commanding Officer to have become well-settled. It has had one of the best operational readiness reports, upon audit, of any in Seventh Fleet and that is part of the reason for its selection. Given a heavy overhaul before departing for three years without return, the fleet opted to skip the installation of the brand new CNP and associated networks for fear that it would cause problems during the extremely prolonged deployment — just like each ship preparing to leave.

This ship has since been upgraded from the original specifications with Arpay technology and following the line of Arpay push for gun systems, including energy-shielded flight decks to allow pressurization.
