Brina O'Connell grew up on Aquaria, the oldest of three and sole girl born to a pair of algae farmers. While their parents struggled to keep clothes on their backs and food in their bellies Brie, as she became known as, established a love of surfing and even became good enough to surf on the amateur level as a teen. A lot of her winnings went to help her family although she did spend some on herself with some of her money going towards a computer. She self-taught herself how to do minor programming and research with it but it was easy to tell that it'd be a hobby and not a passion like surfing was to her.

It seemed like she was on track to join the professional circuit but she instead fell in with the wrong crowd at school and by the time Brina was seventeen she had been arrested several times for breaking and entering and other crimes that required several months in a juvenile detention center as punishment. The last straw for the judge was when she was just shy of eighteen; fed up of seeing her in his courtroom, he gave her a choice when it came time for the plea to come down: either join the CMC or be tried as an adult as well as a repeat offender. That was the wake up call Brina needed and the next morning she signed up with the nearest recruiter. Despite her criminal record they schooled her to be an MP, the first thing she excelled in and actually enjoyed since she gave up the surfing she adored.

Her criminal record kept her from being assigned to a ship and she was instead assigned to a base on the planet she called home, that then followed up by the assignment to the base on Picon, it being where she was when War Day took place. O'Connell and what remained of the squad she was a part of eventually caught up with the survivors who fell under Commander Spree's command. For awhile everything went well and it seemed like the resistance was about to gain a little leeway with the Cylon forces but it went south and the young MP wound up wounded and in a coma. Evac'd to the Orion, Brina spent two months bed bound until, by some kind of miracle, she regained full consciousness.
