Flight Simulators - Deck 2 - Battlestar Orion
The Air Wing has access to flight simulators to train pilots off the ground in combat maneuvers and situations that are hard to replicate with regular dogfight practicing and this is their home. A very large rectangular room, the hatch opens up beside the bank of computers that control the simulations and what is seen by the individuals when training sessions are in progress. The sims are actual cockpits cut out of old frames and installed here to function exactly as the real thing, right down to oxygen plugs for suits. The screens of the old days are still there but rarely used, and in each helmet the crews see a projected hyper-realistic depiction of the combat environment and what their cockpits look like with any incurred damage. There are two Vipers, two Predators, and two full-cabin Raptors available.
Thu 26/Apr/2049 (IC Date)

Carrying her helmet in her left hand and datapad in her right, Diaz is standing just outside the door to the flight simulator room and listening to the voices from within the room as the training group ahead of the one she's slated to be part of is completing their run. She's tapping the helmet against her leg as she stands there, thumb working over the screen as she skims through the sims available to run, not quite bouncing in place but.. it's a near thing.

Donovan makes his way down to the sims. He needs to make one of his own to run for the squadron, so… he decided to take in a few more to get some ideas for what he needed to do to get things in place.

With her helmet hanging from her right hand, and her ponytail smoothly pulled back, Inez appraoches the door where Diaz stands. "They aren't done, yet?" she asks, craning her neck to see who else is on the list if she can.

The crew from the current SIM sessions begin to move through the hatch, a combination of relieved/regret annoyed/thoughtful stamps the faces of the emerging officers. "The TO is waiting for you guys," one of the lieutenants says with a jerk of one thumb over his shoulder to indicate the waiting officer.

Diaz makes a muffled groan of sound, "Gods save me from a TO with a plan," she mutters, en sotto voice, to Donovan before she squares her shoulders, draws up to her not terribly significant height, slaps a professional expression on her face and steps over the hatch into the training room.

Captain Ghoshen, one of the few veterans from the last who doubles as a Training Officer, is waiting inside the SIM room and is standing with marked patience before the bay of cockpits that are already linked to the training SIM planned for this group. "Lieutenants," a pause, "Ensign," said in a tone that carries the edged inflection that says everything it needs to say. "Your mission is as follows. You two," a nod to the Viper pilots, "are escorting your Raptor on a bombing run of a fuel depot based on an asteroid. Your job is to get the Raptor within targeting range, keep your Raptor and ECO alive to drop the bombs, then escort the Raptor and ECO back out of enemy territory and ex-fil, alive. Your job," he looks to Inez, "is to scan the base for the best possible target to set off a chain reaction that'll fry the entire fuel supply pipeline. Pilot's and ECO's discretion on best target. Be warned, drop your bombs to soon and you won't set off the entire pipeline. Set it off to late and the three of you will get fried with the explosion." He waits a beat then lowers his silvered brows, "What are you waiting for? Mission clock is running. Move!"

"Yes, sir," Inez replies promptly, although she winced slightly at the 'ensign' inflection. Once she has her mission, she heads to the raptor cockpit with her ECO, and settles herself in to do all the pre-flight warm up checks. The two chatter back and forth off the comms, and little laugh comes from their module, which is quickly cut off as both send a guilty glance towards the silver haired man before their cockpit is closed.

Diaz doesn't wince only because she's both expecting it instinctively at this point as much as previous experience with this TO has taught her to weather it without so much as a blink. Or else. She's hurries the few steps into the first open Viper cockpit and hooks up the hoses and does the preflight as fast as possible without missing so much as a single step. Trying to 'fast track' by skipping the details is also something that all of them would either earn them a talking to worse. The Look. The Look that says 'you just killed yourself, your combat buddy, and the mission failed because you're dead and weren't in position to protect the rest of the team. You are made of fail.' Yeah. That Look.

Donovan makes his way into the Sim Center and then loads up and picks out one of the simulators. It looks -vaguely- like a Viper… and so, his ritual is followed. He runs his gloved hand along the side of the sim. "Hello beautiful." he murmurs. He then keys open the sim and starts to climb up inside to take part in the nightmare that is likely to ensue after the hatches close.

Ghoshen is already at the command console to cue up the training SIM. As soon as all the pilots are linked to their vehicles of choice the training sim unfolds with flawless surround sound and visuals. The images of other vipers and raptors form up along the three actual pilots in the SIM and each pilot can hear the count down from the CAG to lift off. Simulated com chatter fills the headsets and frequency as each Raptor or Viper either ejects from the ship via launch tube or lifts off from the deck to form up outside the hull of the Orion.

Space, while incalculably vast and incalculably huge is both empty and cluttered with all kinds of debris that drifts in all shapes and sizes. Some debris drifts along as fine particulates and others floating hulks big enough to spawn their own gravity and pull other smaller objects into their orbit. For the sake of this mission, the Orion has emerged from a jump at the very edge of such a debris field that would, in a kind description, be called an asteroid field. Anyone with a keen eye for math would also call this field a high probability of death, destruction, chaos and accidents waiting to happen. Their target lies near the center of the debris field. The mission lead instructs the wing into a loose formation and begins to thread the way forward.

Idris arrives in his duty blues, all crisp with his senior flight wings pinned to his left breast. Not in his flight suit. He carries a dataslate and a steaming hot cup of tea. A nod is given to Goshen, "Captain," and then Idris takes a seat beside the trainer who's running tonight's simulation. Bloodfeather can watch it unfold on Goshen's screen while he himself takes a few notes and drinks his tea. For those few who know him best, like Diaz … there is some subtle change in her Squadron Leader. Since Pitchfork, 'Vogue' is … what? More relaxed? Better humored? Damn it, there's a rumor that he actually smiled at Curric today. Something is different.

"Frak me. Seriously?" Inez grumbles as she looks to the field in front of her. She takes a moment to assess, then gives herself a nod. "Alright, got my hands full here. Sing out when you have our target." All joking is gone, she's completely focused as she chooses an entry point that still keeps them in approzimate formation with the wing.

Bennett saunters on in, some time after her fellow viper squadron commander. She's in her flight suit, tanks and a hint of ink visible as she draws up beside Idris. A little nudge with her elbow, amber eyes on the pods as the simulation begins. "You look like you got some action last night." It's voiced low, but she can't quite keep herself from smiling. Fortunately, that's mostly hidden by a sip of tea.

Donovan looks around his cockpit and he looks at the displays. "Well, that's nice." he says. "That is alot of rocks." he sits up a little straighter and starts to make on the spot corrections for this flight path. "Easy now…" Yeah… he talks to himself when he flies.

With her hands steady on the controls and checking the screens as the viper lead begins navigating a path through the asteroid field, Diaz's overly mathematical brain is running statistics with each careful course adjustment. Every time the math drops down into single digits the viper pilot's hands tighten subtly. Each course correction is made at a precise time, keeping her viper in tandem with Corric's with every turn, every bank, every duck dive and skim, the three of them forming half of a v-shaped wing, both vipers protecting the Raptor every step of the way.

The rest of the wing is paired up accordingly, vipers escorting individual Raptors and spread out on individual paths threading through the asteroid field in an attempt to ensure that as many of the Raptors and Viper escorts make it through the field and to the target to drop their payloads and back out again, the math leans towards this varied insertion points. Those navigating the field will come to realize that the field itself is in motion, both drifting in a rough elliptical course around the nearest gravity well and, equally inconveniently, rotating in a somewhat erratic counter clockwise tip at the same time. It isn't fast, and it isn't easy to discern with the naked eye, but that's what all this expensive, fancy, equipment and training is for. And nothing beats a well trained brain and pair of eyes to work with. The lead viper and raptor team to breach the outer rim of the asteroid field calls out a time on target update while the rest of the teams continue to navigate ever inward.

Bennett gets Bloodfeather's attention. He glances up to her and gives her a nod, "Major." His dataslate he moves out of her way to make room for her to join them and view Goshen's monitor. Until her quiet comment. The Viper Squadron Leader freezes for an instant, then looks at Bennett. The look on his face is fleeting, off balance. "Things are merely going well. A little down time on Pitchfork has been good for all of us, I think." Idris keeps his voice down so not to distract their pilots as the SL's observe the simulation's progress.

As the first trio of ships passes through the secondary ring of floating asteroid debris the first of the sensors that are seeded through out the asteroid field begins to ping. Passive sensors, for the most part, but the Skath are about to find out that they have guests, and not the kind invited to dinner. As more pilots navigate their way forward, more sensors are tripped.

In her own cockpit, Inez is glad that the ECO is a little way back, so he can't hear the muttering under her breath. "Who's idea was it to put a base out here, anyways? Oh right, frakkin' Skath.." she gives a little flinch when one of the floating rocks comes close to her cockpit, but she doesn't jerk, and the raptor continues steadily further into the field.

Kieve is checking over his switches and dials and what not, when the scans seem to combat with readings he arches a brow and taps the screen cause yeah that helps. He will grip the navigation pushing the throttle forward and picking up his focus or well trying to refocus.

The single ping of sound that she hears as her viper trips the sensor as they clear the second ring of the asteroid field has Diaz again resolving to learn more of the catch-all obscenities that are seeded through the various human languages. It's good to have goals to survive to achieve. "Flight, Diaz. We just tripped an alarm. They know we're coming now." This warning sent out she edges her Viper into the lead, Corric falling back to take Viper3 slot, the vipers setting the course and escorting the Raptor every inch of the way.

Meanwhile, the lead team sings out a warning over the com. "Contact! Contact! we have Skath walkers - -" a bit of garbled static, " - - larger asteroids! I say again, we have Skath walkers—" another burst of static that indicates that the Skath are attempting to jam the com frequency used by the Colonial wing as the lead flight is engaging the Skath walkers that appear to be stationed on the larger asteroids toward the center of the asteroid field.

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Flight, Sawyer. I have visual. Switcthing to guns, saving the bombs for the objective."
[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. Copy that. We'll clear the path soon as we have a target to acquire. Over."

"Finally," Inez breathes to herself as her ECO confirms the ping. She looks, and then, "Ah, target ahead," she calls back, then flips on the coms to send out her message. She toggles over to guns, then turns slightly to line the centurion up in her sites.

Idris has been quiet, watching the start of the simulation and how their pilots found their way through the astroids and debris, and their reactions to the various alarms to get through to their mission objectives. After the quiet comments shared with Bennett, 'Vogue' has been quiet. He sips his tea and inputs a few notes into his dataslate but mostly he looks like he's just kicking back, leaned well back in his chair. All but put his feet up.

Diaz spots the gleam of light bouncing off of one of the centurions as they start adjusting the flight course around some of the larger asteroids that form this ever changing, constantly in motion, debris field. The constant buzz of static on and off of the com as the rest of the wing is engaging becomes both a background noise and a reason for the adrenaline rush to start getting serious.

Kieve looks as the contacts pick up one by one. "Contact's acknowleged." He comments though he's got his own fun to have it seems though he'll look over though as the raptor breaks off "Good Luck." He calls over before shooting forward.

The Skath-walkers stationed on the larger asteroids open fire on the incoming flight as soon as the Vipers and Raptor are within reach of the weapons trajectory. The light from the nearest star isn't enough to light up the asteroid field like a spotlight, but it's enough to see by and the Skath aren't exactly hampered by the same constraints that a pair of human eyeballs are. The first two Skath are easy to spot, but that isn't what draws the most attention. It's the sight of two Skath-Raiders emerging from the rocky debris field. In the distance more raiders are inbound as the center of the asteroid field is mere minutes away. In the distance other teams are engaging both the Skath-walkers and Skath-raiders, the firefight is on.

Her peripheral vision keeping track of nearby rocks, Inez pulls the trigger on the Centurion, and has the satisfaction of seeing it go down. "Aiming for the second target," she calls back, watching the shots meant for her wing by and send up dust on a nearby 'asteroid'.

As the thrum of the simulations continues, Kar walks in and nods a polite greeting to Idris and Bennett before his gaze turns to the screens to watch the current sim being played out.

Kar gets a friendly nod from Idris who is looking a bit self satisfied this evening, "Mouse. Grab a seat and watch. We can critic them later in tomorrow's sim review." For now? Bloodfeather is having a cup of hot tea (who knows if it has anything special in it, as relaxed as the Captain is tonight) and he even seems to be in a good humor.

"You have got to be kidding me," Diaz's words are both indignant and somehow offended at the same time. "I get shot by a frakking walker?" She jukes carefully to the side to avoid any other incoming rounds, having to carefully calculate her way around the next big hunk of rock drifting in the asteroid field. As she guides her Viper around the orbit of the jagged sided bit of looming death she sees the sweep of DRADIS painting the incoming Raiders… and further. "Probabilities," before she speaks into the com channel.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. We have two incoming raiders immediately in our kill zone. Say again. Two Raiders, inbound. More inbound. Over."

There is a note added to his dataslate after Diaz's comment. Yes, Idris noticed.

Bennett curves a smile to the arriving Kar, and leans across Idris's shoulder slightly to gain a glimpse of the current situation in the sims. She still has her mug of tea, and checks the clock on the wall briefly, like she half expects she might be late for something. Nope, plenty of time.

In his viper, the young man Kieve is pulling around to provide support. It seems though that he's heard the communication he's more focused on heading into help then talking for now.

As the teams draws ever closer to the center of the asteroid field and the fuel supply located therein, more and more of the larger asteroids have Skath-Walkers stationed on them in single or paired units. Mercifully, thus far, the Skath-walkers haven't aimed the business end of a SAM or AA battery at the incoming Raptor or Vipers. The com traffic relays the first of the teams to successfully navigate the asteroid is beginning it's bombing run, time on target - 1 minute out for the lead team.

Bennett gains a glance from Idris when she leans closer to better see the simulation running. Most of Bloodfeather's attention is likewise on his pilots before he says low, "Captain Goshen wrote this scenerio but Ensign Diaz did one the other night. I have assigned Lieutenant Curric to program a sim for next week. I think it is good for those pilots with the most initiative to be encouraged to learn to teach. I believe it sharpens their own skills and makes them more responsible towards their fellow pilots whom one day, they may be Squadron Leaders over themselves." If any of them live long enough.

"I agree," Bennett chimes in, voice soft. Her eyes don't leave the screen in front of them. "It is also a good way for them to learn to think like aggressors. Though I think the responsibility you mention is.. debateable." She sips her tea, and looks faintly amused.

Taking a seat, Kar undoes the top button of his blues, and relaxes a little, placing the dataslate he holds onto his lap. He does not however, turn it off, instead seemingly mulling between the astrocharts on his slate and the simulation screens. His ears twitch slightly as he overhears the conversation between Vogue and Bennett.

Dodging the shots coming her way pushes Inez off course, and she mutters under her breath. "Still on the target. How's the jamming back there?" She asks, eyes on the debris field, the asteroids, a quick glance for the others in their wing, and then aiming for her target again.

Missile one away, Diaz's is scanning the asteroid field for more targets as she and Kieve engage the first pair of Raiders that angle in their direction. The sight of the missile turning the raider into more debris would normally cause a bit of a happy dance (mentally at the very least) from the Viper pilot but the sheer number of objects to dodge and navigate around forces the happy dance to wait until later.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. Missile one away. Splash one RAIDER, changing weapons, engaging Raider2, Over."

Idris turns his head to look back to Bennett, "I thought it worth trying, Major. If we suffer the staggering loses of pilots as we did in the last war," he pauses to take a drink of his tea and resume watching the progress, "We need those who remain to us to be as flexible and as capable as possible. I think it may help identify possible future leadership, should I require replacement."

Kieve manages to avoid getting hit, but during his manuvers his aim was also thrown off and his shot hits a heavily armored portion of the enemy though not dismayed he'll pull back around for another shot.

The lead flight drops it's bombs near enough to the target that minor explosions are cooking off in the distance. Near but not close enough to get the job done. Each team is allowed one pass before their flight path takes them back out along the layers of the asteroid field, having to fight both Skath-Walkers and Raiders all the way out to the edge of the field. No such thing as an easy u-turn and reverse course in a debris field this thick.
Inez hits this time, and pulls a hard left to avoid a rock, putting her right in the path of one of the other Centurions. She grits her teeth with a little yelp as the raptor shakes. "Okay, back there?" she calls to her ECO. Once she's recovered her flight path, she toggles her coms.

The shot is off again it seems he's a bit rusty or more likely just having a bad night at least it's only a sim the only saving grace at least. Kieve will be determined though turning hard around again to line up another shot even as he's targeted.

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Flight, Sawyer. ECM's knocked out, but we're still flying."

Wincing as more rounds ping off of the hull of the Viper, Diaz scans the asteroid field for more of the Walkers as the incoming Raiders move ever closer and are just now within range to fully engage. She hits the com again, speaking in a clear tone of voice.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. Wynn, switch to Missile. Say again, Switch to Missile, KEW isn't cutting. Sawyer, Copy that. We're one minute out from our bombing run. Stand by, over."

Kar's attention on his slate is ripped away as he hears the call for misiles over the speakers and looks up just in-time to see the fireworks. A small smile hints at the corner of his lips as he glances to Vogue.

There's something to be said about blowing past the centurions that are standing on floating asteroids. Once they're in the rear view mirror, so to speak, and out of range to engage, the trick is to focus no the next target ahead. The second of the teams to reach the target manages to kick off another set of explosions that destroy more of the perimeter of the fuel depot itself but as they blow past the target the lead and trailing vipers are picked off by the raiders that they engage. The surviving raptor and escort Viper manage to thread their way through the innermost layer of asteroids and begin navigating their way back out of the field. Over the com is the voice of Captain Ghoshen, "Commence bombing run."

Kieve switches his targeting to missiles as the new targets come into view. He will bank after pulling the trigger on them though his ship is struck by some of the crossfire though it isnt bad and he can re-engage.
"Flight, Sawyer. Copy Diaz, swi-" and Inez realizes her comms aren't on. She pauses, still trying to switch to missiles, but her ECO gives a report that they're jammed. "frakkit, hang on," she calls back, and just throttles through the shots, and debris, and then pulls around to hear the command for the bombing run.

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Flight, Sawyer. Commencing bombing run."

Exchanging dueling weapons locks with the incoming Raider, Diaz's Viper shudders with the impact of the weapons fire that proximity to a large bit of asteroid debris necessitates rolling toward the weapons fire instead of away. She calls out the course adjustments as they burst free of the innermost ring of asteroids and see the supply depot in the center of the asteroid field. A single glance is spared at the Skath machinery set up to do what ever it's all doing, and the damage that's been done by the first two teams.

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. We'll keep them off of you, Sawyer. Wynn, missiles are the way to go, nice shot! Over."

Two near hits are enough to have painted the target zone with smoking craters but it's the last hit from the third time that hits the mark. The chain reaction that cooks off inside the fuel depot is now a ticking bomb. In so many ways. More raiders are lifting off from the larger asteroids around the fuel depot that is very shortly going to be the asteroid that was formerly known as a fuel depot. More than few, in fact, as the emerging raiders start to lift off to vector away from the depot there's a sudden realization that a great many more Raiders were docked for refuel than had been counted in the original assessment.

Minimum safe distance. Minimum safe distance. Three very - important - words right now as Diaz pours on the speed to lead the way back out of the asteroid. She doesn't actually have to IMAGINE the sound of a ticking bomb. All she really has to do is take a good hard look at the fuel depot to see the spreading explosion. But as that's /behind/ and what's ahead is a spreading mess of Raiders rising out of the asteroids like daisies popping up out of the snow, now is an ideal time to leave. Exit. Thataway!

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. We just kicked over the hornets nest. We need to get out of here and RTB, Over."

<FS3> Diaz rolls Piloting: Failure.
<FS3> Kieve rolls Piloting: Success.
<FS3> Donovan rolls Piloting: Good Success.
<FS3> Inez rolls Piloting: Good Success.

Donovan has been out of the mix, it was a serious issue with his flight controls. It threw him for a loop. He was not used to a SIM mocking up system malfunction. He managed to get it corrected and then a green light illuminates his status panel.

[Into the Wireless] Donovan says, "Flight, Corric… fire control is back online, I'm coming in to try and take the heat off… Diaz, Corric… you have two turning inbound on you, watch your six."

[Into the Wireless] Inez says, "Flight, Sawyer. Copy RTB."

[Into the Wireless] Diaz says, "Flight, Diaz. Copy that, Corric. Attempting.." there's a brief burst of what sounds like Diaz doing a good impression of swearing like a marine, "hit some debris. RTB, copy, RTB! Over."

There's silence again on Diaz's end followed by the simulated vision of the canopy cracking like hard boiled egg, spiderweb fractions spreading in an instant. "Crap," is all that needs to be said, as there isn't enough tape in her kit to fix THIS amount of damage. "Last missile away," she says and sends it off with a wince.

"Hit it!" Inez crows back to her ECO, and then she's turning to follow the vipers out, and avoiding a bouncing Diaz. "Alright, bombs again, clearing those centurions on our way out." She calls out the release, and then continues flying.

The screen in each cockpit goes black as the voice of Captain Ghoshen sounds over the coms. "Everyone clear out to make room for the next group. Your mission was a success but your KIA count is Three Vipers. There are no fresh pilots waiting to take your place, there are no resupplies ready to top us off. We can't absorb our losses. Think on that. Move out."

Captain Idris Bloodfeather, also known as 'Vogue', has finished his tea. He inputs a few last notes for tomorrow's sim review, then sits up in his chair and looks at Goshen. Major Ynyr had already slipped out moments before. Once Goshen has finished, Idris moves to stand, "Listen up, Lucky Strikes! For those of you who are not on CAP rotation first thing tomorrow, I want you in the Ready Room at 07:00 for simulation review! Dismissed!" Afterwards Bloodfeather adds, "Thank you, Captain Goshen."
