Flight Simulators
The Air Wing has access to flight simulators to train pilots off the ground in combat maneuvers and situations that are hard to replicate with regular dogfight practicing and this is their home. A rectangular room, the hatch opens up beside the bank of computers that control the simulations and what is seen by the individuals when training sessions are in progress. The sims are actual cockpits cut out of old frames and installed here to function exactly as the real thing, right down to oxygen plugs for suits. In front of each cockpit, complete with armored glass, are LCD screens that cover most of the front view to the front and above. There are two Vipers, two Predators, and one full-cabin Raptor available.

Scheduling people for simulator time becomes a measure easier once they toss you in that CAG office. Instead of 'Hey find open time for some people,' you just make it happen. Thus, a handful of folks find themselves with a simulator block towards the end of Alpha shift. When they roll into the room, Epiphany is already standing before the bank of computers. Screens are lit, data is rolling by, and there are three specific 'birds' ready and waiting. A pair of Preds and a Viper. The recently-named CAG isn't watching the door, so at least they can file in and take stock without feeling like someone is hovering. Rather, the woman is at the 'primary' console, leaning over and typing further commands in every so often.

It's like going to a party at a certain time of year. Does one come in 'costume' and risk being the only one who has or not bother and be the one labled 'party pooper' because they decided not to dress up? Ruby decides to err on the side of caution and don flightsuit, her helmet tucked under her arm. "Hello." Offering anyone already present a smile, the ECO tucks herself off to one side, out of the way while awaiting instructions.

Kelsey is one such. She appears in her flightsuit, complete as usual with bodyarmor and sidearm. Lately she doesn't wear the suit without the whole - unless its duty aboard. She is already pulling her helmet out of the bag when she arrives and tosses the bag by the consoles. There's a glance over towards the Preds and she nods a few times. No grins. The girl looks more serious than any of the Orion vets have probably grown used to. There's a glance to some of the new faces and she nods in silent greeting.

Ygraine also shows up in her flightsuit, and though she has her helmet, she has it tucked under her arm. A lift of the tall girl's chin is offered as she falls into step next to Kelsey. A quick eyeful of the consoles, and Yggy makes a quick face. Gods, she hates predators.

Alejandro arrives, not yet having heard the news that they have a new CAG and who it may be. He comes in wearing his flight suit, kitted up and ready and carrying his helmet. The Lieutenant seems to be annoyed with one of his fastners and focused on it as he steps to one side of the door, taking a moment to sort it out and mutter beneath his breath about needing to get it seen to. He gives up on it since it's only a sim, and looks around to see who else is already here or coming in. Dark hair tossled, Hobo gives faint upnods to those he knows and waits.

Zoe follows the rest in, also in her flightsuit, because it's the right thing to do. She looks cheerful, bouncy even, despite the fact that she may end up with her figurative ass in a sling.

And who brings up the rear? Laine of course. Slightly harried looking as he slips through the door at the tail end of the group. At least he managed to get his flight suit on and not forget his helmet. Not that that has ever been an issue for the ensign… yet. He doesn't look to nervous once he sees the CAG's back turned towards the door, and just sidles off to the side. His eyes fixate for a moment on the few faces that are familiar, giving new ones a quick one over.

After inputting a few more commands, Epiphany finally turns and looks to the pilots and ECOs as they filter in. Seeing folks in their flightsuits is satisfying to the woman and she gives a bit of a nod. "As I hear rumor is already doing what it does, yes, we will be taking action on Aerilon soon. I expect the Air Wing to prove the egos it hauls around. That means I expect you to treat the simulators as if it were the real deal." Is she bringing attention to her new position? No. Might they have noticed someone opened the CAG office and began cleaning out the dust? Maybe. For the moment, Arrington is acting simply as she has since getting aboard. An instructor. "Hobo-" this, directed to Alejandro. "You're PIC for this exercise. Squire and Milkshake will operate one Predator. Take your pick of who operates the other. I want you in a Viper, providing overlook." Which leaves either Laine or Zoe with Ruby in the other Pred. "Your target is a small compound with a trio of batteries-" She leans, hits a key on one of the keyboards, and a map appears. It's straight-forward. From the trajectory they're starting at, they'll be coming from the east with one SAM in line and the other two each north and south of the building. "Raiders are known to fly regular patrol. You are estimated less than two minutes before the patrol passes." There's a glance over everyone, but it might just be that her gaze lingers on Kelsey in particular for a second. "Questions?"

Kelsey looks over to see Ygraine beside her and she smiles a bit. There's none of that dangerously playful air about her this time, though. Just a bit of warm, wordless greeting. When Arrington starts talking, Kelsey just looks back at her while she takes it all in. There are no subtle facial ticks, nothing to indicate her thoughts on the matter. Whatever she might be thinking is hidden behind a casual mask. "Can you load us up with missiles, sir?" But she seems ready to go. The helmet is donned and she'll step once the word is given.

Ruby listens attently as Epiphany tells Hobo what she has planned for the exercise, the young woman quiet the entire time. When she's done she looks over towards Alejandro, waiting for further instruction.

Hobo looks a little surprised at being chosen for PIC but he nods and listens, then looks to Laine and Zoe, "I don't know either of you yet. Haven't seen you fly so may as well educate me. Ensign Laine, let's try you in the Pred, shall we? You know what you're to do?" Any questions, let's have'm. Alejandro puts his helmet on but leaves it open as he secures the seals.

When Alejandro sorts out who gets the last two Zoe grins at him, then she tugs the helmet on quickly. She is ready to go towards her spot when the time is called, until then she cools her heels with her excitement carefully contained. For the moment.

There's a bit of surprise on Laine's face as he's chosed to pilot the Pred, but he gives a firm nod of his head. "Yes, sir. I flew Preds a few times back on Caprica, I should be able to handle it." His responding grin is a lop-sided, slightly goofy smile that makes him look at least eager if not exactlly serious. He looks towards Ruby and gives a another quick nod. "I guess I'll be your partner for this little party." And then the helmet goes on his noggin.

Ygraine leans forward to study the map. "Right. High explosive missiles, probably a braided approach to prevent a lock and gives us each a secondary shot at any given target. Sir?" Ygraine looks to Alejandro for his opinion of her assessment. She's trying to learn here, okay?

"Already done, Squire." Epiphany looks over the others, taking a bit of a step back to lean her hip against the table. She reaches for a thermos. It's bigger than the usual mug she carries. By at least twice. But if tradition (what little there is right now) holds, she'll have a cart in here after the session with coffee and snacks. Whether she does it primarily for her benefit or for the pilots, well. No one's thought to ask. At Ygraine's assessment, there is a nod for the ECO. "Happy hunting." And then they're ushered, with a gesture, into the hall with the waiting machines.

"Right. Let's go and claim our bird, then." There's one more glance towards the others before she puts her helmet on and moves to where the others are. Al's given a nod if he looks her way and then Ruby's attention is solely on the 'mission'.

When they're ushered towards the machines Zoe starts moving, heading towards one of the ones that are designated as Viper for the mission. She has at least seemed to calm herself down, taking things seriously now that things are more at a start point.

Kelsey nods to the Captain. She waits for Ygrain, though, seeming to understand her place. Then she moves off towards the Predator. She plunks down into the front seat and starts plugging herself in right away. Gloves come on afterwards and she seals them up as well. The Ensign flips through several systems and screens and brings up what seems to be her preferred set. Strapped in, she settles herself into the seat and puts one hand on the stick and the other on the throttle, waiting. "Good to have you working my bird again, sir," she says quietly to Ygraine. Nothing else, just a bit of a smile heard in her voice.

"Excellent." That to Laine. To Zoe, Alejandro says, "Our job will be to protect the Preds so they can do their run. As there are only two of us, you don't have to stay on my wing to do that." Hobo gives Ygraine his attention and nods, "Yes, but not too predictable a pattern. I know you know your stuff, Milkshake." She's quite experienced. When they are ready, he starts to go into the hall.

Laine makes his way towards one of the predators as he finishes fastening his helmet. "I'll follow your lead." The comment is off towards Kelsey and Ygraine before he disappears inside the cockpit, dropping himself down in the front seat and scanning the controls to quickly reaquaint himself with the differences between the Pred and the Viper he's more familiar with.

As the four pilots and two ECOs head for the simulators, Epiphany pulls out her chair and settles into it. Coffee kept at hand, but her eyes are largely on the screens before her. This, at least, is the woman's element. Once they are settled in and the screens come to life, it would appear they're breaking in from orbit. "Strike Leader, Orion. You should already have the target on DRADIS." And lo and behold, the first of the three pops up at the leading edge of the radar, soon followed by the others. It means they have time enough to make their targets. But it also means the batteries can reach them.

Ygraine fires up her missile systems and runs a quick check before speaking up on her comm. "Milkshake to Air Group, y'all new folk ever done fly a braid before?" She leans forward and gently thumps Kelsey's helmet indicating that she's ready.

Kelsey acknowledges lead Strike and settles into the cockpit well enough. "Strike One online." The thump to her helmet makes her smirk and it gets the adrenaline pumping. "Copy that, sir. Two, weave with me, opposite my movements. If I break off continue your attack run." Kelsey watches the screen pop up and instantly they are targeted. "Whoa! One defensive!" The Ensign shoves her throttles up and begins to bank away from the SAMs while trying to still give her ECO the ability to fire.

Once settled in and the simulation comes up and starts running as though they are coming in on the approach, "Orion Actual, Hobo. We have it on DRADIS and are making our approach. Everyone heads up, we have less than two minutes until Raider patrol." Alejandro keeps an eye on their positions relative to one another to see how they are forming up and how they are moving around. Some of his attention goes to the SAMS as he adjusts his instruments and range.

Zoe quickly settles in, fairly mellow for her usual motormouth bounciness. "Copy that, Hobo." She returns, acknowledging his works as she turns her attention to adjusting and targeting the incoming SAMS.

Ruby fires up everything and she makes sure all the systems are green. Opting for missiles, she nods once, listeninging to the information as it's given. As for Ygraine's question she doesn't answer it since she's not sure who it is directed to.

Chewtoy is quick to settle into the cockpit, grabbing the stick as the simulation comes online. "Copy that, Strike One. Right on you, Squire." He falls into formation with ease, and keeps up the braid. Though he keeps his Pred a bit more steady, giving Ruby a chance to better aim the missles. "Looks like one's gunning for us." He comments to his partner.

"Strike, Orion. We show Raiders incoming." And lo, a pair appear on DRADIS, coming from the north. As for the damage report from the intended targets? They're waiting to hear on that.

Kelsey banks the Predator through the turn and as soon as the missile is away, she yanks hard on the stick and backs off the throttles. The turn becomes much harder and she suddenly levels out to spot the SAMs off the right beam. She counts in her head and shoves the throttles back up and dives down under them. They both explode and manage to knock the Predator around a bit, some alarms go off and she pushes a few fuses back in and shakes her head. "Strike One, still in the fight." The ship rolls out and begins a climb back up towards the sky above and the battlestar, jinking as she does. Diving towards the deck? Nope, Kelsey is playing the safe card for once and running for home.

"Athena's bubbly butt." Luckily the only one privy to Laine's foul mouth is poor Ruby. The explosion from the SAM sends the Pred a rocking through the air, ont some fancy moves and a dose of luck allowing him to fly through the other side of the fireball. "We're going to have to play it safe from here on, plating is almost shredded." Then through the radio. "Strike Two, still in it, barely." He moves the Pred up, deciding to take a few pot shots at one of the raiders, even as he does his damnedest to stay away from enemy fire.

The braid works, but only to a point. Preditors take hits but also get off their missles, sending up billowing explosions as they rush in and over their targets. Alejandro fires and weaves, getting clear without a hit but he grimaces, "Flight, Hobo. You guys all right? Heated up fast." He slews his viper around to watch their butts but can't see clearly through the rising smoke whether they got the SAMS, hearing about the raiders. "Keep up evasive manuveurs and come around to see if we need another pass." Hobo sees Chewtoy lining up to watch Squire's back to keep a raider off of it and Ale jinks around and drops back, "Got one on you, Raven. I'm on it. Help Chewtoy keep Squire clear."

While Laine might not be heard at first Ruby is as she squeaks in surprise when they're hit and all but taken out of the fight, the high-pitched sound reaching all ears as her mic is open. Her eyes scan the readout, her brow knitting. "Yeah, we're fine here, "Hobo. Nothing some duct tape and bailing wire won't fix, anyhow." Huffing, she looks out the window, frowning. "This is a lovely way to spend the evneing. Next time we should bring the family, no?"

"On it, Hobo." Zoe replies, coming around to line up with Chewtoy and Squire, targeting the one that isn't on her. She adjusts things and aims at the Rader, biting her bottom lip and possibly shooting a silent prayer to someone that she hits this time out.

"Strike, Orion. We are showing targets are clear, repeat, targets are clear. Return to base."

Kelsey see's the Raider fire passing her on the screen as the blue begins to fade towards the black of space. She rolls the Predator hard and ends up speeding back towards Aerilon a moment before pulling back out and heading for the safety of the imaginary ship above. Nope, she isn't going to play that game. No hoots or hollars, the pilot up front stays quiet and just maneuvers. Only once the call from Orion is heard does she reply. "Copy. Hobo, permission to egress the zone to Orion."

Ruby rubs her head… or at least she tries only to then be twarted by the visor of her flight helmet. "Damn…" Closing her eyes, Chewtoy is allowed to radio in. She'll just be in the backseat, trying to will the sudden headache away.

Alejandro slews his viper around but despite his experience his shots miss and he's unable to keep the raider off of Zoe's craft, "Damn." That muttered to himself. He stays on it though, giving throttle and hard in the turn to stay with it, "Orion Actual, we copy. Flight, Hobo. You heard'm. Permission granted. Get back to Barn! We still have a raider. I'm on him. Raven, evade! Over."

"Hobo, Chewtoy. Make that permission for two." The Pred is barely holding together, and no amount of bailing wire and duct tape was going to keep it in the air much longer. He shuts off the radio. "Hey, smile, we're not dead. That's a plus." Not that she can see the mad grin across his face behind his visor.

Ygraine leans back in her seat, now that the Predator she and Squire are in are effectively out of the combat. "That was some fairly conservative flyin', Kels-Bells." she says softly, off the comm.

"Copy that, Hobo." Zoe replies, then she starts to move in an evasive pattern, trying to shake the Raider on her tail off. She's seriously all business for the moment, concentrating fully on trying to not get shot again. It's serious business staying alive.

<COMBAT> Raid1 attacks Zoe with KEW - Serious wound to Body (Reduced by Armor).

<COMBAT> Alejandro attacks Raid1 with KEW - Light wound to Body.

<COMBAT> Raider-1872n has been KO'd!

<COMBAT> Raid1 has been KO'd!

<COMBAT> Viper-7444s has been KO'd!

<COMBAT> Zoe has been KO'd!

Kelsey unplugs her comms and her helmet upfront can be seen to nod. "It was. But that was a bad scene. We can't clean up the killboard if we're both dead, right, sir?" Yggy can probably hear the smile in her voice. "Good shootin, Shakes. Always a pleasure flyin' with ya, el-tee." She relaxes back into the seat and breathes a long, satisfied sigh. "Talk later?"

This sim is a little strange and it's taking all of Alejandro's concentration to nail this raider but he manages it. Question is what shape Raven's in? Her viper looks to be in bad shape. "Flight, Hobo. We are clear. I repeat, everyone back to barn, Over." In case Laine didn't hear it the first time. Hobo was a little busy there and paces his return to fly wing to Raven's damaged ship's return in the sim.

Once it winds down and the simulations darken, he unstraps and opens up to step out. Alejandro removes his helmet, "That was a hot and fast." Like needy sex.

"Man, if things are this rough when it comes down to it next time…" Jazz doesn't say anything further. Best not jinx them. Unstrapping herself from her seat, she remains put despite no longer being confined, the ECO quiet, thoughtful. Pensive, even.

The pilots are going to find themselves dealing with live landing drills soon enough, on top of the actual combat coming down the wire. Epiphany didn't push them through that in the simulator. The woman is, however, already leaning over and running diagnostics while the group wraps up and has some time to talk it over. There is, indeed, a beverage cart. And two carafes. One is coffee. The other is hot chocolate. And? No granola bars this time. Someone secured a plate of cookies from the mess.

Zoe unstraps herself and climbs out, tugging her helmet off to tuck under one arm, her other hand reaching up to scratch beneath her hair. "Exciting." She comments, grinning once more, glancing in Ruby's direction for a moment. She shrugs her shoulders a bit, "I always plan for it to be shit, myself. That way I'm happy when it's only mildly shit-flavored."

Ygraine has a faintly sour expression on her face by the time she's climbed out of the sim. Like she just sucked on the lemon she used to unsuccessfully remove the freckles from her face. "That was ohmygodscookies." Someone needs to turn her frown upside down with sugar.

Chewtoy pulls off his helmet as the sims go down, snorting softly. "That was some good missling though." He hops out of the cockpit and makes his way back into the room, setting his helmet down on the table before he makes his way right to the cart for a cup of coffee, the cookies are looked at, but ignored. "C'mon, that wasn't so bad.."

Once the sim shuts down and the cockpit canopy rises, Kelsey lifts her helmet slowly and rises. Just a nod and smile. The girl seems to have done some growing up in the last few weeks. One foot out first, Kels moves from the sim and carries the helmet by the chin as she moves back towards the control area. Even face, hair a bit sweaty. She just looks to the others, a particular nod to the Viper pilots in appreciation. But upon seeing cookies… The helmet goes to a console and she moves to the cart. Hot cocoa first, and then a few cookies to dip. Awwwyis.

Alejandro rolls his head around on his neck until it pops, not having particularly enjoyed that simulation very much. Rougher and faster than he'd like but, shit can happen like that. He scrapes a hand through his sweaty hair and sets his flight helmet on a chair out of the way as the others come out. "You did fine, Chewtoy. Preds were right on the mark." His own shooting sucked hairy balls. "You all right, Zoe? Speaking of shyte, do you need to go change?" He grins, wipes sweat from his brow and returns Kelsey's nod. Hobo will hang back and let the others at the refreshments.
Instead, his gaze slips to watching the Captain, trying to read Arrington's expression.

Ah well. At least there's cookies. Which of course reminds Ruby of when she used to get cookies made by her mom when she had a bad day. Stretching out her arms, the limbs drawn slowly up over head, she meanders slowly so that anyone higher ranking than her can get theirs first. "Nice job, everyone." A quick glance is given to her pilot first and then the others, lingering on no one overly long.

Zoe grins at Kelsey, but then she laughs at Alejandro, "Me? Not at all." She replies, shaking her head a bit, "I did all my freaking out a while back…I went through a bunch of flightsuits. I think I'm good now." She doesn't rush towards the refreshments, but does set her helmet down so her hands are free again so that she can start stretching her shoulders out.

The cookies and hot chocolate were likely a last minute decision, but that means it is all piping hot. You know, when the cookies are still gooey in the center? "You all handled that well. I apologize, something seems to have affected the difficulty scales in the system." The apology is a relatively flat one. She's not coddling them, but she's acknowledging that something went awry. "The next session you're called in for should not be so-" but something's come up on the diagnostics and the Captain loses her attention to it as she begins typing away at a keyboard.

Ygraine seems oddly displeased with the way the sim went. But now she has a cookie, and that mollifies her somewhat. Instead, she turns toward Goose to see what the new CAG has to say. The revelation about the difficulty settings does cause her to lift her eyebrows, and that seems to settle the dairymaid some.

Kelsey doesn't shy from dipping warm cookies in cocoa. NEWP. She munches one down before grabbing a napkin and pocketing a few. There's a glance to Shakes, "Melissa should get few of these," she whispers and goes back to enjoying it. There's only a glance to the apology. No, she seems sated by chocolate, waiting for the Captain.

Laine shrugs slightly at the CAG's explaination, not seemingly bothered by her sudden distraction either. He's had more chances to get used to her style than others. He leans his hip up against one of the consoles, happily sipping away at his coffee as his eyes quickly shift between the various members of Airwing. "Hey, the challenge just makes us better, right? Even if I think my stomach is still bouncing from that explosion."

"Good, because that smell makes the Deckies very grumpy and they'll tell stories about you." Alejandro twists his mouth with good humor and his attention flickers back to the Captain. A faint nod, more to himself than to anyone else. He waits until there's an opening at the table and then gets himself a bottle of water if there is any, of a plain black coffee if there isn't.

Once she's satisfied with whatever updates have been put through, Epiphany turns in the chair and leans back, crossing one leg over the other. Yes, even she has a mug and a cookie. The latter is dipped in the former and a bite taken. "Either way, it all still stands. Any simulator sessions you are a part of from here on out, I want you to practice hard and fast hits as air support." She knows that beyond the scheduled sessions, some like to spend off-duty time practicing as well. "There will be days where the hits simply are that devastating and those of you that make it will be expected to bounce right back." There is no water. Too bad. Just warm drinks of caffeine or sugar for all!

Zoe sticks her tongue out at Alejandro, then flashes a grin at Laine, "I think so…" She agrees, edging in to grab herself a coffee, which gets a quick sip before her attention turns back to Epiphany, listening to what the Captain has to say.

After making sure wrapped cookies are pocketed, since theyre so rare, Kelsey upnods to Laine. "Hey. Good flying. That's what we need on runs like that." When the Captain speaks, though, she nods. "Copy, sir. Fly it like you stole it." Yep, that seems all the confirmation she's going to give.

"Aye, Squire. Aerilon is going to be dicey, at times. You may have to make some quick, hard landings. Either for getting back to base or medevac." Epiphany takes a bite of her cookie, waves to the door. "Dismissed."

"I think I am going to get a shower and rack out for a while. Thanks for the practice, sir. Was a good reminder." Ruby snags herself a couple cookies to enjoy on her way to the head, that all that's seen of the ECO until a much needed good night's sleep is had.

"Yes, sir." Laine pipes up as he's dismissed. "Food then shower. Blessed lovely food." He drains the rest of his coffee and tosses his cup, making it halfway to the door before remembering to turn around and grab his helmet. As soon as he's out the door and into the corridor he starts whistling a disgustingly cheerful tune.

"Thank you, Captain." Zoe flashes Epiphany a grin before she picks up her helmet and heads for the door as well, tucking it beneath her arm.
