Maia was born to Erock and Melyssa Kane in 1978 on Leonis. Hedon to be precise. Her upbringing was fairly normal for being the child of scientists who were rather well to do. She went to the right schools, had the right friends, wore the right clothes, acted the part. Only.. there was a streak of restlessness inside her that she could never quell. Even from a young age she believed she was irrefrangible. To sort of temper her and perhaps give her a focus, her parents put her in a gymnastics class that was in essence a 'babysitter' for them and their daughter they didn't understand. Though it was a nice past time, she still had that aggression she needed to get out, so they enrolled her into a martial arts class also where she learned a lot of hand to hand maneuvers for either self protection or the tournaments she entered.
It was something she found herself to excel at, often bringing home trophies and medals. As scientists, her parents were distracted most of the time and left their daughter in the care of nannies or sitters quite often while they lost themselves in their work.
During their times at home as a family together, they tried to all pretend they were normal, doing the whole family dinners, movie and game nights, but her parents always knew she had a restless spirit. Most of the time for the game, Maia always chose lego's and while her parents could have argued that wasn't a game at all, it kept her busy for hours on end, designing creations that would rival many architectural design models.
It was during her mid-teens she took up BASE Jumping. (Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth. - Spans being bridges and earth being cliffs). Base jumping is an extreme sport and her parents knew nothing of her dangerous hobby. She earned the nickname BeeJay from her friends to avoid mentioning base jumping in front of her parents.) The adrenaline rush she got from flying, if even only falling, was intense and she found herself needing to do it more often, needing the freedom she experienced from the free fall in the several moments before the chute opened. It became a regular thing, lying to her parents saying she was staying the weekend at a friends house while taking road trips with her friends to jump from different heights.
Her family moved them all to Caprica and that is where her new dream began. She was out to prove it, just like she had promised and first things first, she enrolled in the fleet academy, dedicating herself to her studies for four years. She graduated with honors, and immediately enrolled in flight school. This was her love, her true love and she had finally found it. Free fall flying from base jumping was nothing compared controlling your own destination and in the cockpit she felt more at home than she ever had anywhere else. Unfortunately, her nickname stuck with her. BeeJay, as much as she had incessantly talked about base jumping. Even taking a handful of friends on a trip to do it once. Still, she continued her martial arts training, loving the discipline she found in it. She no longer competed in tournaments, only doing it for herself and the self defense should she ever find the need.
Into her first few months of flight school, she met Luc. Gabriel Raynor. It was a whirlwind romance where he swept her off her feet at every opportunity, never giving her time to miss him, a very in-your-face, hands on kind of guy. When it came to their training in piloting, gunnery, firearms they were very competitive, each always trying to top the other. They spent so much time together in training and in real life. He also liked taking her to do odd things and Zorbing was one of them. Maia took a belly dancing course on a dare from him and Luc took break dancing on a dare from her. They rented movie after movie, spending time together at every available opportunity, talking about everything they could imagine. She trained him some in martial arts, just the basics mostly but she could still pin him about every time they play wrestled.
And then two lines appeared on the first pregnancy test and a plus sign on the second. Refusing to believe it, since they had been so careful, Maia had sought out a physician who confirmed it with a blood test. She was pregnant. When he asked her to marry him it was only natural that she said yes. They were going to be parents and since they already spent so much time together, why not make it official? No sooner had they done the deed than she miscarried the baby she was carrying and their whole relationship spiraled downhill from there. Petty arguments, needless blame, intentional jealousy inflicted by deliberate flirting, it was a mess. They sought counseling and got a house together on base, trying to work things out, sometimes even succeeding in pretending to be happy together for months at a time. His hot-head and big mouth though proved to be too much and eventually, they called it quits and legally separated. It was a mutual agreement.
Since the separation, Maia has taken to further training in piloting, gunnery, ECM, firearms and continuing her martial arts. Showing great talent as a pilot, it seems she no longer has anything to prove. To anyone. She seems to be doing fine without Luc, having bounced back and she has since passed the rigorous mental questioning to get sent to Orion where she had flown her Raptor in the war. Post war day she seems to be just taking one day at a time, doing her duties.
Maia looks eerily like a former centerfold model (Miss May '03) who posed for a popular magazine that men buy to.. read the articles in.. Though the name of the model is forgotten by most, the spread wasn't and people still confuse Maia with the model, calling her Centerfold. It has stuck as her callsign.
Maia and Luc met again on Orion and after counseling with the Chaplain, they have officially divorced. Since the liberation on Picon, Maia has been transferred there and has been training and working for the last several months until her recent return to Orion. She's solely focused on her work, only affording herself the occasional time off to let her hair down, but she's in for the cause, with tunnel vision, and isn't going to let anything or anyone distract her from what she loves doing, flying.
