Background

Born in 1978, James Kingsbury was firstborn in a family of six. His parents are eighth generation farmers, owning the land and making enough to keep the family fed and the farm running. The Kingsbury family is the poorest of the poor, worn-out hand-me-downs and all. It's more about the farm and keeping from starvation than worrying about fashionable clothes. The Kingsburys are proud, though, keeping themselves clean and making sure what they have is in good repair.

Despite the required hard work of living on a farm and having many responsibilities, He kept up with his classwork well enough. He struggled in his classic literature classes, but excelled in debate and communications, as well as maths and sciences. He graduated in the top 5% of his class, and after a long talk with his family, he relinquished his claim to the homestead and went into the military.

He entered the Colonial Fleet School and was assigned to Picon. His secondary school years went quietly. He was transferred to CFAB Radix on Virgon to complete his training. He spent a year working hard, learning to be an ECO. He was average at it; despite his intelligence, the mechanics of it took a bit of time for him to cotton on to. Thankfully, there were no real emergencies to consider, so his slight fumbling wasn't enough to drum him out or hold him back.

His first assignment was on Gunstar Valkyrie, after he'd learned the duties of being an ECO by rote. He met Agrippa there; the two know each other by sight, and by (old) callsign. He was given the callsign "Royal" due to his last name, and the irony of the fact that he was nothing at all like royalty.

Along with a promotion came a move; when Kingsbury became a LTJG, he volunteered to the Battlestar Orion. He became a Red Bat, working closely with his pilot in Logistics. Said pilot, Daniel "Virgin" Bedow, was killed in battle during Warday. After things died down a little, Kingsbury transferred from the Red Bats to the Gentlemen Ghosts.
