Chaplain - A priestess of the Lords of Kobol, Iphigenia is ordained and thus able to perform any ceremony as may be needed for any of the polytheists on board. She can take confession, perform funeral rites, marriages, dedications, etc. She has an active, working knowledge of scripture.
Counseling - As a chaplain she can provide pastoral counseling, but Iphigenia also has a Psychology certification and is licensed to practice. Regardless of a crew member's faith (or lack thereof) she is willing to offer her services if needed.
Music - She enjoys singing both religious and secular music. She's participated in chorus and glee clubs all through high school and college, and was often called upon to sing liturgical music while in seminary.
Nobility - The Ardens are one of the old noble families of Virgon. It would not be inaccurate to address her as "Lady Iphigenia Arden", however for obvious reasons she doesn't tend to bring it up. Fellow Virgonese and/or those with interest in the Virgonese monarchy and aristocracy may recognize her.
Repair - She's picked up a knack for fixing things during her last tour; in a pinch she can provide decent assistance to a more experienced mechanic, and knows the difference between a socket wrench and a spanner wrench.
Address
Iphigenia currently has the rank of Lieutenant. As such she may be addressed by rank, however chaplains are generally considered of equal rank to the person addressing them while in their service capacity. This is also why chaplains generally do not offer salutes. Iphigenia does not object to any particular term of address, whether it's "Sister", "Lieutenant", or even "Iphigenia" or "Gen" if the circumstances call for it. She is considered a "Friend and Advisor of All" irrespective of rank, and while expected to behave in a manner appropriate to hers, she has access to all berths and every mess while performing her duties.
Ceremonies
Iphigenia is available to perform all of the various ceremonial rites of the Priesthood of the Lords of Kobol. This includes dedications for new projects and people (see the "Dedications" section), marriages, the making of offerings to one or all of the Lords, funeral services, the offering of blessings, rites of passage, and listening and absolving confessions. Part of her duties also involve visiting and bringing comfort to the sick and distressed.
Confession
A confession begins with the confessor saying, "Bless me, Brother, for I have acted against the example of the Gods." The Brother or Priest will then say, "Proceed in the name of the Gods," and after hearing the confession, they will end by saying, "You are absolved in the example of the Gods." — [Battlestar Wiki]
Counseling
Iphigenia can provide counseling in a number of ways; in her capacity as a priestess, purely as a licensed counselor, or with a mixed approach. It often depends entirely on the person who has sought her assistance; she will ask them questions to help determine what path will best assist them. As such, she can try to help anyone across a wide spectrum of belief systems, from atheist to fundamentalist to monotheist, though admittedly they may not be able to look past her ordination.
Counseling solely from a psychologist's approach generally involves a lot of one-on-one discussion, possible group therapy, and if necessary, cognitive behavioral therapy. A pastoral approach also incorporates referring to scripture and or prayer/offerings to the Lords of Kobol as an expression of faith and tool with which the person she is helping can work through the issues they are dealing with.
Dedications
"While not fully explained in the Re-imagined Series, it appears, based on the information from a dedication ceremony for Nicholas Tyrol and the prayers of Kara Thrace, that each Colonial is paired, or "placed in the service" with one or more of the Lords. Based on the dedication ceremony blessing, Zeus is a considered "almighty" or foremost of the gods, while other Lords are prayed to by Colonials as a proxy to Zeus." — [Battlestar Wiki]
Iphigenia was placed into the service of Aphrodite and Athena when she was born. A question she will commonly ask those she counsels in a pastoral capacity is what Lords they were born into service to. This can often have some effect in the nature of her counseling for each individual.
Prayer
Examples of various types of prayer are evident in the series; sung prayer, call-and-response, silent prayer, group prayer, individual prayer, and prayer spoken by the clergy while the attendees are silent. Iphigenia tries to be inclusive whenever possible, so she generally encourages group prayer, sung prayer, and call-and-response whenever possible. She encourages people to compose their own and is glad to help create prayers or improvise them if called upon to do so.
